This is meant as more a PSA than a review. So, let me start by saying this group are great and they do a fantastic job. The low rating is really about the lack of communication of the danger which is in part their role, but also the travel agents (and my fellow reviewers). I have done easily 50 rivers in my lifetime including some rough ones like the Waikato and Gauley. I have seen teeth bashed in and arms broken. Without doubt the Batoka gorge of the Zambezi is by far the most dangerous river I have rafted. DO NOT go with children. DO NOT do this if you are not a STRONG swimmer. DO UNDERSTAND the significant risk of injury and that you will be at the bottom of an inaccessible gorge with only a few exits far apart (both of which are extremely stiff climbs) DO UNDERSTAND that medical treatment is a few hours and an agonizing climb away. DO UNDERSTAND your medical and travel insurance may not cover injury while rafting. That being said, if you are after exhilaration then this will be the most extreme rafting you do in your life. So if you accept the risks go for it. The fact that no one was injured on our trip speaks to the high skill of this company. However, there were some people on our raft who if they had gone into the water I don’t think it would have had a good ending. Five stars that they did not go into the water. Two stars because I think the company should not have let them on the boat. They should assess and then veto people who show up who look unprepared. Of at least seek to strongly dissuade them. This is NOT a typical class IV rapid trip.Went with the Maano team today. Unbelievable day. The team were very professional and reassured us very well.
