The Great Buddha
The Kotokuin was constructed in 1252. It has a bronze statue “Great Buddha Statue” that stands 13 meters high, sitting cross-legged, robed with drapes in the classical lines reminiscent of ancient Greece, cast in 1292. It sits outside against wooden hills.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Hase-dera Temple, 3-11-2 Hase, Kamakura 248-0016 Kanagawa Prefecture
This temple is famous for housing a Buddhist statue of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, with eleven faces and a thousand arms. Each of the eleven faces represents a different phase in the search for enlightenment. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan. You can also enjoy the pretty garden with ponds and the Jizo-do Hall with hundreds of small statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva who helps the souls of dead children to reach the paradise.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, 2-1-31 Yukinoshita, Kamakura 248-0005 Kanagawa Prefecture
This shrine was originally built in 1063 and dedicated to the Emperor Ojin (God of War) and the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo among others. An interesting fact of this shrine is that it was not only a Shinto "Hachimangu" shrine, but also a Tendai Buddhist temple for most of its history.

Very knowledgeable guide but difficult to understand his English. Also had to pay 2700 yen for couple and guide tickets to Kamakura and 2700 back again plus 5000 yen for 3 lunches and another 1000 yen or so for admission tickets so this gets expensive.

We knew that we had to take buses and trains to reach our destination but the entrance fee we had to pay our selves. Consider this trip with the Nikki trip we feel it was too high considering our transportation to Nikki is included and it is an all day tour whereas Kamakura was only a half day...

Consider this trip with the Nikki trip we feel it was too high considering our transportation to Nikki is included and it is an all day tour whereas Kamakura was only a half day tour. Although the sites visited was beautiful the cost was too high.

We were fortunate in having an excellent guide. Zushi was local and had an amazing store of knowledge combined with a great personality - he made the trip! I found the hundreds of small statues at the Hase Temple quite emotional, the gardens were beautiful. The Great Buddha is certainly impressive. A special highlight was the fact that a wedding was taking place at the Tsurugaoka Hachimango Shrine and we were able to witness the whole procession and hear the traditional musicians - what a privilege! Our lunch was excellent. We made our own way back to Tokyo - the trains are so organised and efficient that anyone with half a grain of common sense can travel by themselves in Japan.
