Overview

Experience a morning guided walk to Giants Gate on the world famous Milford Track. From Milford Sound the track is accessed by water taxi and follows the mighty Arthur River through lush, temperate rainforest to Giants Gate, a most photographed and spectacular waterfall. This walk is suitable for all skill levels but you will require some fitness to cover the 11 km.

Inclusions

  • Professional guide
  • Hot drink + snack
  • Return water taxi
  • Rain jackets available, but must be organised the day prior if required.

What to expect

We begin with a short boat ride across Milford Sound’s Deep Water Basin to Sandfly Point.  This is the end point of the Milford Track, but the start of our hike. From here we begin our guided walk, meandering alongside the cascading Arthur River then moody Lake Ada, on a well formed track. Our destination and half way point is Giants Gate waterfall. This spectacular waterfall is best viewed and photographed from the large swing bridge spanning the river.

There is much to see, from the ancient trees covered in lichen, to the vibrant green ferns and mosses below. Walking in a small group (maximum 12 people) your nature guide will point out the native fauna and flora, and share the fascinating human heritage of the track, bringing the area to life.

On completion of the walk an opportunity is made for photos at the sign marking the end of the walk, festooned with the boots of walkers that have made it to the end of the walk, not a single step further. Then we rejoin the boat for a transfer back to the Milford village.

This was great fun - we combined the trip with the Milford Sound cruise in the afternoon leaving from Milford Sound itself (we were staying at MS Lodge). It poured with rain overnight and through some of the morning so were slightly dreading the hike but Andrew our guide was great fun and promise...

Helen (our guide) was very knowledgable about the Milford area and we learnt a lot about the flora and fauna in Milford sound, the hike was leisurely and serene. Would recommend

Highlight was the water taxi ride from Milford Sound to Sandfly Point that only took 5-7 mins. The cruise was as expected with stunning views of the Sounds. The tracks are mainly flat and easy, no need for hiking poles. The end of the hike was at Giant Gates Falls. We returned on the same tracks ...

We had a tree down on the road on our way to Milford sound so did not get to do the hike. There is no cell service between Te Anau and Milford sounds so we couldn’t contact them for two days. When we got back to town I had an email saying they heard about the tree issue and that we would be getti...

Kate was an amazing guide for my half day tour. She knew so much about the flora and was willing to stop and show me the various native plants. I could have gone on the hike but without Kate I would have not known what plants I was seeing.
