Overview
As you gain confidence in the water, you might want to start to pushing your limits and seeing what more you can achieve. With this in mind, it is important to expand your knowledge and understanding to keep safe in the water.
Equalizing
Pressure under the water increases as we descend so it is important to learn how to balance this pressure.
Holding your Breath
Increasing your breath-hold time takes practice - you don't have to be in the water to train!
Clearing your Snorkel
There are a few different ways of clearing a snorkel, once you crack the technique you'll be much more comfortable.

What to expect
Snorkeling Goat Island is one of the top 10 things to do in Auckland.
Advance your snorkeling skills and learn how to duck dive under the surface, equalize your ears and clear your snorkel. You will be part of a natural aquarium, myriads of fish and marine life.
You will meet at our Goat Island Dive and Snorkel Center. Here our friendly staff will fit you out in your equipment which is provided: mask, snorkel, fins, a wet suit and weight belt.
You will then drive in your own vehicle 3km to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Here you will meet with your Instructor.
The experience starts with tips advanced snorkel techniques, and proper freediving breathing practice. We share the history of Goat Island and introduce you to the marine life you are likely to meet at New Zealand's first marine reserve. After your full and thorough safety briefing, we'll head down to the water and begin the tour! Along the way we will stop and put our new techniques into practice, getting you comfortable underwater and hopefully extending the length of your freedivers.
After the tour you will be able to use the equipment for the remainder of the day, so you can keep practising and enjoying the reserve.

Our guide Jerusha was extremely knowledgeable about the island and marine life and I loved the briefing at the beginning where we got to learn about all about it. I felt extremely comfortable and safe going out in the water with her and was always making sure we were okay. This was an amazing experience seeing all different kinds of fish, baby squid and even a stingray! My partner and I were lucky enough to spend the whole morning with Jerusha (sorry if I’m spelling your name wrong), although we had our times wrong she was very flexible with her diving hours. The informative speech on sea life and the human burdens on the eco system differed to that of your normal “our world is dying, turn vegan” chat, making it really captivating and relational. During the dive we wouldn’t have seen much without her expert creature spotting and fantastic GoPro skills, but she nailed this experience. We have travelled far and wide but have definitely voted this snorkel trip one of our absolute favourites. Also, CONGRATULATIONS on graduating with your degree in Marine Biology. Winnie was a wonderful guide that manage to keep a wayward group together while still pointing out the wild life we should see and how to best dive to see them. In addition to the numerous fish, I was particularly happy to see a tiny, beautiful nudibranch.

Despite one of us feeling a bit sea sick, we enjoyed our afternoon viewing the abundant sea life at Goat Island Marine Reserve. Definitely recommend even if you are new to snorkelling.

My grandson and I spent the morning with a guided snorkel. It worked out splendidly for us. At their building, we got good care in proper fitting of the wet suits and snorkel gear from the busy staff. Everyone very friendly. Winnie, our guide gave us lots of information as to what we would see and got us to the best areas for seeing different species of fish. She was very helpful and enthusiastic and did look out for everyone's safety without being intrusive. It is snorkeling in kelp beds, not reef, different but fun and interesting. Without our guide, we would have been rather lost in finding things. I recommend using the company for the guide, even if you are an experienced snorkeler.
