Commissioned by Popes Clement XIV (1769-1774) and Pius VI (1775-1799), this museum was intended to house Greek and Roman masterpieces from the Vatican.
In the centre of the museum is the octagonal courtyard with the most famous statues: the Apollo of the Belvedere, a 2nd century A.D. Stop At: Gallery of Maps, VA, 00120 Città del Vaticano, Vatican City
One of the most beautiful and impressive parts of the Vatican Museums is certainly the long corridor, 120 metres long and six metres wide, leading to the Sistine Chapel adorned with maps.
The Gallery of Maps, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, was created between 1580 and 1585. The frescoes were painted by Italian and Flemish artists under the direction of Ignazio Danti, mathematician, astronomer and cosmographer.
The walls of the gallery are covered with forty maps of the various Italian regions, with maps of the main cities. On the ceiling adjacent to each region are representations of the main religious events that took place there.

We booked our tour at the Capriotti gift shop after being approached by a man with information upon getting out of our cab. We weren't sure what to expect since we did not plan ahead. We saw other groups with 30+ people. I'm so happy we stumbled upon this company and our guide, Daniela. Our tour group only had 4 people. Daniela was excellent! She took care to keep our group together and did a wonderful job explaining the history and answering questions. I learned a lot and had fantastic time! Highly recommend! Our guide, Vincenzo, was very knowledgeable and same time entertaining in communicating the vital information of the tour. Our guide, Vincenzo, was very knowledgeable and same time entertaining in communicating the vital information of the tour. He cared so much in providing the most accurate details imbedded in illustrations and viewed information along the tour. He even game us insights of important items we should take notice to achieve as much wealth of knowledge we can bring home and share to our families. Our tour guide was Giovanni. He was very informative and had a good sense of humour making it even more fun and interesting. I would definitely recommend paying and skipping the queues and using this tour guide.

Our tour was with Stefania (in Spanish) and was very pleasant and she was explaining curious facts. She took enough time to show and tell. We enjoyed it also, because we could not find any other tour online or even tickets on the spot. This turned out to be very quick and adjusting to our needs. The tour however seemed a bit pricey, €61 per adult and €46 per teen, but considering our last minute decision, was a perfect match for a reasonable price.Vincenzo as a guide was very pleasant, personable, informative, and funny. Vincenzo as a guide was very pleasant, personable, informative, and funny. The tour had a total of eighteen people. Vincenzo made sure that the group stayed together for the most part. Although there were a couple of teenage boys that would lag behind and then run up behind us and kept cutting my wife and I off as we were trying to keep pace with Vincenzo This was a problem that their parents didn't correct.
