A bit of a drive to get to, but well worth the visit! We got to the first garden and a volunteer guide introduced us to the gardens and made herself available to answer questions about the butterflies and hummingbirds in each of the 3 gardens. She also showed us the frogs and other creatures in the aquariums. Nice hiking trails through the conservatory and a small gift shop and visitor center. Please support them when visiting this area; they will put your money to good use for the future benefit of biodiversity! Our visit to the Butterfly Conservancy was well worth the trip. Our visit to the Butterfly Conservancy was well worth the trip. The location is away from La Fortuna where other butterfly encounters are offered. This gave the opportunity to explore the area more and support the non-profit. We saw several types of butterflies, the Blue Morpho and others, as well as various frogs. A terrific volunteer pointed out things of interest and gave info on behavior, etc. I highly recommend this spot!First it wasn’t really guided BUT the wormer and a very kind woman did give us the background on the conservatory, the life span of a butterfly and show us the frogs etc. If you like butterflies this is a must!! First it wasn’t really guided BUT the wormer and a very kind woman did give us the background on the conservatory, the life span of a butterfly and show us the frogs etc. If you like butterflies this is a must!! Very cool place with beautiful local specific plants, butterflies, frogs and turtles. A simple walk around also could lead to a monkey sighting as it did for us. IF you want to do the river walk make sure to have close toes shoes on! Worth the $20 for sure! What an amazing place! What an amazing place! The conservatory is run by a very delightful man who not only shared the history of the conservatory but also an insider’s view of the best places to visit in the area. The conservatory has 4 different butterfly enclosures that are teaming with butterflies. You can see them at every stage of life. There is also a frog and turtle enclosure with many species from the area. It was all explained by a volunteer who was bubbling over with excitement to share her knowledge and love of everything they had to offer. There is also a hiking trail through the back of the property that lets you enjoy the old growth forest and a experience what the area looked like before the cattle farmers arrived. This experience is worth every penny if you love the butterflies and frogs of Costa Rica! Glen and Agatha were very engaging. They explained the life cycle of butterflies and had up close exhibits. You can see the amount of work they put into caring for them. This experience is worth every penny if you love the butterflies and frogs of Costa Rica! Glen and Agatha were very engaging. They explained the life cycle of butterflies and had up close exhibits. You can see the amount of work they put into caring for them. The frogs, turtles and even the giant cockroaches were fun to learn about! The plant life was exo amazing and well labeler. I am a pre-k teacher in Texas and they have given me so much knowledge to pass on!Pleasantly surprised - starting with the receptionist the entire experience was amazing. Staff/Volunteers went the extra mile to chat and explain what was being done. Unassuming as a tourist attraction but a must visit.
