Nagoya has lots to see, a culture vastly different from both the Tokyo/Yokohama and Kyoto/Osaka areas, and all the urban excitement you'd expect from Japan's third largest metropolis. On this tour, you'll get out of the central Nagoya rut and see a tribute to Nagoya artistic industrial splendor in the form of Noritake no Mori, a showcase of ceramic techniques, facilities, and output of Noritake, a company that's enjoyed international fame across the centuries. From there, it's non-stop: Splendid gardens, an historic shrine, and dive into the wealth, power, and privilege of the samurai of yore.

Stop At: Atsuta Jingu Shrine, 1-1-1 Jingu, Atsuta-Ku, Nagoya 456-8585 Aichi Prefecture

Your day starts with a visit to the rightly famous Atsuta Jingu (Shrine), overflowing with grand edifices, grander trees, and yet still grander history and religious significance. You'll learn about Shintoism and the role of religion in Japan in general, both today and yesterday.

Shiratori Garden is a truly magical and oft overlooked natural oasis, always a favorite of locals, and one that quickly becomes a favorite of visitors alike. Classic and more modern Japanese elements harmoniously co-exist, and the serenity comes easily.

Stop At: Tokugawa Art Museum, 1017 Tokugawa-cho, Higashi-ku, Nagoya 461-0023 Aichi Prefecture

Tokugawa Museum is a hallowed ground with commanding artifacts and spaces that drive home this famous ruler's historical impact like few other spots in Japan. Here, in addition to the many famous swords, regalia, furnishings and more from this most famous of samurai's era, you'll find calm and inspiration in the beautiful gardens located just outside the museum halls. A truly estate-like experience.

Stop At: Noritake no Mori, 3-1-36 Noritake Shinmachi, Nishi-Ku, Nagoya 451-0051 Aichi Prefecture

Back towards the commercial center of Nagoya, we visit the world famous ceramics makers' "Noritake no Mori" with its historic and still functional factory buildings interspersed across lovely landscaped grounds. Exhibition areas allow you to see gorgeous ceramics pieces past and present up close. You'll also see how these masterpieces dating back to 1904 have been made. This facility has something for artists, industry buffs, and shoppers as well (we stop at the store only if you want to).
