Gerald arranged a remarkable 10 day tour for my wife and me and another empty nest couple which included Leon, Granada, Montebelli Reserve, Ometepe ( a volcanic island in the middle of Cocibolca--Lake Nicaragua--which is the largest lake in Central America ), Aqua Wellness Resort on Playa Redonda near Tola for R&R where we saw great birds and were entranced by the antics of the howler monkeys who gamboled on the branches just outside the windows of our treehouse. While staying at Aqua, we snorkeled one morning (the one disappointment of the trip) and took an afternoon sail on a 38 ft sail boat the next day which was great). Our trip culminated in stop at the Masaya Volcano to peer into crater to see the churning lava of an active volcano on our way back to Managua to stay near the airport before flying out tomorrow. Gerald handled all the logistics flawlessly, paid fastidious attention to details, suggesting restaurants and hotels (which we booked in advance ourselves.) He rented a comfortable passenger van and hired an excellent driver. He speaks English perfectly and is very knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and natural history of Nica and is an excellent birder (one focus of our vacation). He also knows a lot about the colonial and more recent history of Nica which he expounded upon in detail in response to our interest. He has a compelling personal story which he shared with us about the civil war in the 80's and how it affected his family; beyond that, he is warm and personable and really cares that his clients have an enjoyable and meaningful experience. I am sorry to be leaving Nica and look forward to returning soon to hike another volcano, explore the highlands (which we didn't get to this time) and, perhaps, the Caribbean coast and to renew my friendship with Gerald who promised us a memorable and enjoyable experience. He more than delivered, exceeding my expectations. We are a family of five from Canada who had the pleasure of spending time with Gerald from Duran Tours. We are a family of five from Canada who had the pleasure of spending time with Gerald from Duran Tours. He is very patient with families; he has a great sense of humour and made our adventures very fun. Gerald is very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about Nicaragua. We were taken to many non-touristry areas which we greatly appreciated. We would highly recommend Duran Tours! This is the second time I have visited Nicaragua and the second time that I have used Geraldo Duran as our tour guide. This is the second time I have visited Nicaragua and the second time that I have used Geraldo Duran as our tour guide. The first experience was so wonderful that I told him I would be back. I absolutely love everything about Nicaragua and Geraldo. The country is so beautiful, interesting and safe its just a wonder that more tourists haven’t discovered this treasure in our “backyard”. But it is nice to visit a place that isn’t overrun with tourists. The country is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited (I’ve been traveling over 40 years and have visited more than 120 countries). The ocean is mostly untouched by development and they have 7 active volcanoes. The people are super friendly. I think most Americans believe it is a dangerous country but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, guns are outlawed here so it feels much safer than the US. We had a chance to visit Masaya, an active volcano as well as Granada, Lake Apoyo. But the highlights were the simple places Geraldo took us to so we could eat local food and visit traditional ceramic workshops. We traveled with 13 people including our 7 grandkids and they had a ball. The kids of course loved the beach and so we spent most of our time at Playa Iguana and it is a beautiful place. I didn’t get a chance to sandboard this time but maybe next time. I plan to go back this fall. Geraldo is a real environmentalist and so knowledgeable about nature so we really connected there. His English is flawless.Amazing company. Great tour guide/driver, great communication. Highly recommended. Nothing but positive things to say.

First time users of Tours by Locals(and to Nicaragua) and it was the best!! Gerald took us to the volcano (which was amazing), around the city (to beautiful and historical places), and to Grenada…but his knowledge and friendship was above and beyond our expectations! We had the best experience seeing how safe and magical and interesting Managua was. We couldn’t have navigated the city or seen so much, without Gerald. He even told us about other places to visit on our next trip to Nicaragua. Thank you sooo much Gerald!!
