Georgia on My Mind: Georgia O'keeffe and Ghost Ranch Country Tour
Overview
In addition to visits to the O'keeffe Museum, the Welcome Center and painting sites, we will be driving through the incredible Piedra Lumbre basin (or Valley of the Shining Stone) which stretches from Abiquiu to Chama along the Chama River. From there we will visit Ghost Ranch, a dramatic 21, 000-acre of New Mexican landscape, where the reclusive American artist Georgia O'Keeffe led a solitary life immersed in nature and art. O'Keeffe fell in love with the sculpted landscape of rivers, cliffs and buttes in an expanse of earthen formations which according to pueblo peoples are alive and imbued with spirits of the past. Ghost Ranch is also known for a remarkable concentration of fossils, most notably that of the theropod dinosaur Coelophysis, of which it has been estimated that nearly a thousand individuals have been preserved in a quarry at Ghost Ranch. By touring the formations, the Chama River Valley and Ghost Ranch we understand the love she felt for the ancient, sacred place.

The O'keefe welcome center is dedicated to information about this amazing artist and her work.

Stop At: Abiquiu, Abiquiu, New Mexico
A visit to the Bosshard Gallery (a restored 19th century old adobe compound~ art, antiques & furniture, from all over the world) adds a element of regional history to our tour.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, 12 Palvadera Road, Abiquiu, NM
A tour guided by O'Keeffe foundation, $45 per person advanced reservations are required.
Duration: 1 hour

White Place (Plaza Blanca) is a stunning canyon of evocative rock formations adjacent to Dar al Islam Mosque. This is O'keeffe's favorite place to paint.

Stop At: Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, Private Road 1622, Abiquiu, NM
A farm, museum, and store devoted to lavender.
Duration: 20 minutes
Stop At: Abiquiu, Abiquiu, New Mexico
The historic Inn at Abiquiu is located next to the O'keeffe Visitor Center and will be our stop for lunch.

We planned our Santa Fe tour around our Corn Maiden tour and for us it was the perfect approach to our first visit to Santa Fe. At Mae's, our tour guide's, recommendation, we toured the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum at the beginning of our stay. By the time we went on our tour, we had a good background knowledge of Georgia and her paintings. Our trip to Georgia's Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu was absolutely stunning. Seeing the places that inspired her paintings was an amazing glimpse into her life and Mae's extensive knowledge of not only Georgia O'Keefe but the geology, anthropology and pueblo history was more than we could imagine. While the less than brilliant sunny skies provided an unbelievable backdrop to the visual buffet of these amazing cliffs, buttes and structures. Definitely the highlight of our Santa Fe trip and we hope to return to do other Corn Maiden tours! Thank you so much, Mae!C3233DTsuek

We toured Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu with Mae and had a wonderful day! With Mae at the wheel, we could focus on the spectacular scenery while listening to Mae's detailed local history. We would book again in a heartbeat!

Mae toured us for four days and her knowledge of the areas we visited was outstanding. Her energetic personality made the tours entertaining as well as educational. She also helped us by taking photos for us at all the best locations. We would highly recommend her as a guide.
