Rarely have I taken a tour that has exceeded my expectations. This is one of those tours! Our excursion started off ominously when we missed our train from Paris to Reims thanks to some poor advice from a train conductor -it’s France. Knowing we would be very late, we didn’t know if we would even be able to take the tour. However, the tour operator was flexible and accommodated our revised schedule, which was greatly appreciated. Our tour guide, Guillaume met us at the train station and we were off to our first tasting. The tour focused on smaller producers, which was great because it gave us a view of the industry from a non-corporate perspective. Lunch was at an old champagne house owned by the tour operator. It featured food, wine and champagne, of course, from the local area. It was the best meal we had on our trip. The afternoon was filled with a bike ride through champagne country. I must say our guide, Guillaume, was stupendous! He was extremely knowledgeable about wine, having been a former sommelier at a local 5 star hotel. More than that, he was knowledgeable about the whole area because he was also a resident. His insights were truly priceless! If you’re looking for a down to earth, non-corporate feeling tour of Champagne country, this is the one for you. Not incidentally, the tour operator is also affiliated with a charming bed and breakfast called Le Clos Corbier. Definitely worth a look if you are inclined to stay in the area.
