From Market to Meal
Overview
WELCOME BACK TO JAPAN!!
My experience, Market to Meal, has been one of the most unique and top-rated Airbnb experience.
I have been in the food industry for 25 years in the US and Japan. I have worked in restaurants, been a caterer, and shifted my career to a cooking teacher 20 years ago. I have been in the food exporting business such as exporting wagyu, seafood, fruits.
Since I have opened my cooking school in Shibuya in my home about 10 years ago, I have created this culinary experience for Tokyo travelers to show Tokyo food life followed by cooking class in my kitchen. My guests will see how Tokyo locals shop, eat, and live. And learn about what really Japanese are eating everyday, and how the food products are organized and displayed. In my cooking class, the menu is seasonal Japanese home cooking. Learn about umami, dashi, Tamagoyaki, types of miso, Japanese cooking tools, cooking rice in a Donabe.
Vegetarian and Pescetarian choices are both available in this experience.

Course time: 10:00-14:40ish Difficulty: easy Menu: Salad, Soup, 2-3 sides, 2-3 entrees, dessert Group size: 6 Yukari is a very warm host. She spent lots of time in the USA and her language skills are impeccable: she can easily translate ingredients to help with making this a practical course to improve your culinary range back home. She has formal chef’s training but is also a mom and understands how people work, live, and eat. This was very practical and helpful while also being mellow and fun. Grocery shopping with her was great: we walked around while she explained some cultural things about Japan (food supply, quality, use of different ingredients/condiments historically and currently). She recommended some things that would be reasonable gifts to take back home, and gave us an opportunity to separately buy things we may want or need. After walking to her home, we chatted a bit about our menu and she assigned us different tasks. She really facilitated conversations well, helped open everyone up and made working with strangers not seem intimidating. The meal ended at around 2pm, but we had all become so friendly we chatted for about 40 minutes before realizing we had our own loves to get back to! Between meal prep and cooking things, we always had something to do and there was no unnecessary downtime. We prepared dashi from scratch, prepped things like roe and rice, cut vegetables and meat. She taught us about the basics of Japanese flavor (soy sauce, bonito, miso, etc). The final meal ensemble was very filling and delicious. She left us each with a personal recommendation for what to do/how to enjoy our time further in Tokyo. If you have an opportunity and interest, this was a very practical and fun experience into learning about real Japanese cooking.
