This was such a personal and authentic experience! While Machu Picchu was interesting, it was really crowded and stressful. But this peaceful day with master weavers was the opposite -- beautiful, quiet and totally unique. After a pickup at our hotel in Cuzco, we meandered through the Sacred Valley to the weavers' courtyard workshop. During the morning, we picked and prepared leaves, sticks and other materials to make natural dyes, and then we dyed the handmade yarns. Then we shared a lovely lunch and got to weave our own textiles after a beautiful demonstration. I will never be able to look at textiles in the market the same way again -- my respect for this art has greatly increased. Luckily, I was able to purchase a garment right there at the workshop. I have already worn it, but it is so gorgeous that I plan to hang it in a display case on my wall when I get home.I already was looking for a traditional Peruvian textile workshop since a long time and I was really happy to have found this one in the Sacred Valley. I already was looking for a traditional Peruvian textile workshop since a long time and I was really happy to have found this one in the Sacred Valley. I can say without a doubt, that my expectations were more than fulfilled and I would totally recommend this workshop!!! I was able to spend an incredible and informative day with Edwin and his family. On the ride to Calca, Edwin told me many interesting facts about Peru and the Inka culture and additionally I was able to practice my Spanish a bit. On the courtyard of Edwin`s family, I was really warmly welcomed. I get to know there many interesting steps in the whole textile process from a family which is well-known for practicing this handcraft since a long time now. I could not only watch this whole process, I even could be part of it and do all the steps on my own- from the spinning of the wool, picking the plants for dying the wool and in the end, I was able to weave a hairband and to take it home. At noon I was invited to sit at a table together with the whole family and to eat and get to know traditional Peruvian dishes. The family was incredible friendly, familiar and generous- I felt like being part of the family and by the way I could learn some words in Quechua language. The price for the workshop is not very cheap, but was definitely worth it. This price now also is understandable for me, since I experienced the whole, complex and time- consuming process of this artisanry. Moreover it is a good way to support this work and to uphold the traditional textile handcraft. Once again, a big THANK YOU to Edwin and his family for an unforgettable day- I wish I have had more time to learn the whole process in detail. Also a big thank you for the many great, memorable photos of this day- Edwin by the way is an excellent photographer ;)To see the master weavers of Cusco awarded by Unesco move the fingers, that moment, is one of the most intense moments I have had in my life: extremely beautiful to see. If you like textiles, then this experience is a MUST! Totally recommended.

After many hikes we did around Cusco we just wanted to spend a relaxing day and see the Sacred Valley. We booked the tour online, just the tour not the buffet lunch - we thought it was too expensive to pay 19$ for a buffet lunch as we are not big eaters and we are great food in Cusco area for far less. We decided not to go to Pisac ruins and climb up Ollantaytambo as we were really tired and also we already paid the 70 soles tickets when we went to Moray and Maras and didn’t want to pay again and we’re glad that we did it. We had such a fun day! Our guide Edith was knowledgable and full of fun and interesting information about the Sacred Valley. Our first stop was to see Llamas, Alpacas, Vicunas - I love them so it was great! Continued to Pisac, then went for lunch - we didn’t want a buffet so there were not a lot of options for us, too bad that we didn’t know that Ollantaytambo was such a cute city with plenty of food options. Ended the tour at a place where they make all those beautiful clothes from alpaca. All in all a day well spent!I went on a day long excursion to learn traditional Inka methods of weaving and dying fabrics. Wow! Did I get so much more. Firstly, Edwin is amazing. I went on a day long excursion to learn traditional Inka methods of weaving and dying fabrics. Wow! Did I get so much more. Firstly, Edwin is amazing. He is a wonderful guide with a wealth of knowledge. He picked me up at my hostel in Cuzco and took me to the workshop in Calca, telling me about Inka history along the way. When we got to the workshop, we were greeted by his sister. She is a well-known skilled artisan in the area. The family goes back at least 4 generations of Inka weaving and dying. I learned about the alpaca wool used, the plants used to dye the fabric, how to make different dyes, learn techniques of ancient weaving, had a family feast (Yes, a feast!), danced, and laughed. An incredibly warm and generous people! I even kept the dyed yarn I made and bracelet made. The even have a store where you can buy ponchos. This is not one to be missed. The price was around $100 USD for transportation, class, food, yarn, and bracelet). Highly recommend!!!
