Indeed, filming is still ongoing, and on the morning of our tour, the crew and actors had been in the village filming (our tour was in the afternoon). Made our visit to Port Isaac that much more interesting!Wonderful tour. Our tour guide, Mike was very knowledgeable and seemed to have some connection to the Doc Martin show. Wonderful tour. Our tour guide, Mike was very knowledgeable and seemed to have some connection to the Doc Martin show. We toured on the second day of our stay, so we saw most of the obvious attractions, but what was the best part of the tour was going down the small streets and alleys to see more of Port Isaac than we would have seen on our own. Mike said he was not feeling 100%, but one would never know. I would highly recommend this tour even if you are not a Doc Martin fan!Dave/David was a very good guide. As a local and an extra in the show he was able to add to the tour beyond just places and sites used in the filming of the show. The tour was more than just the show although that was a large focus. There was also Port Isaac the town and the community

If you are a rabid Doc Martin fan and plan to visit Port Isaacs, better known as Port Wenn in Cornwall, start your visit with a walking tour led by Mike Meakins. Meakins, who often appears in the show, is the perfect guide: warm, humorous, a great story teller, and obviously knowledgable about the town and all the Doc Martin settings. Our trip was in April so the crowds were manageable, especially in Port Issacs where summer time tourists could reach 2,000 a day. Not for me. We always travel off season and that paid off in Port Isaacs where the tour group involved about 20 tourists. Meakins worked the tour like a pro, giving us an insider’s view on the cast and the impact the series has had on the town. “About 97 percent approve,” he said, pointing to the economic impact that the show has had on tourism. Over about a 90-minute walk, he show us the various sights so recognizable in the show: Louisa’s houses, the various stores used for the pharmacy, the side streets, the boathouse, and , of course, Doc Martin’s surgery, which is a private small home now for sale at about $1.25 million pounds. You can book a tour through Trip Advisor and reach Mike at [email protected]. A major surprise that were not on the tour’s agenda involved spotting two favorite cast members -- Ian McNeice, better known as Burt Large, and John Marquez, who plays PC Penhale. McNeice is often in the Port with his little green plastic basket to fund raise for various programs. The day I summoned the courage to stop him outside the Chapel Café, he was collecting for the Port Isaacs Boat Rescue program. He gladly accept our $20 pound note and, in turn, posed for a photo. Meakins told us that during two previous visit, “Burt” raised about $10,000 for the town. The next day, a busy Saturday, we spied “Penhale,” in town to finish up some scenes for the final Doc Martin series that airs next fall in Great Britain. A brilliant comedic actor, Marquez graciously posed for a photo. Surprisingly, I seemed to be the only tourist who recognized him, though he looks exactly like his TV character. We used the trip to Port Isaacs to cap a week-long journey through the Cotswolds, a story book district of medieval towns just an hour or so outside of London but a three-and-a half journey to Cornwall from Chipping Campden where we stayed. If you want to get a serious feel for the England outside of London beyond a day trip, rent a car and explore. But be warned. Driving with the steering on the right is not for sissies. The two-way roads are narrow with roundabouts that are a challenge. Thankfully, cars are equipped with GPS devices that made the effort worth it. Arlene Notoro Morgan
