So we planned a stop in Trieste on our way from Venice to Split, Croatia. We knew a little. The city was the home of Chef Lydia Bastianich and many national flags flew there over the centuries. It turned to be a wonderful surprise. We found beautiful architecture, wide streets, reasonable prices, friendly people and even more complex history than we had imagined. Helping us sort through the centuries of politics, wars, occupations and developmnets was our guide Demian Sem. He was wonderful. Demien is a Slovenian (next door to Trieste) and explained how Slovenia, Venice, Italy, the Hapsburgs, Ottomans, Romans, Italian Fascists, NAZI's, WWII and others figured in the city's history. Demien punctuated his narrative with personal anecdotes and the local color you can only see with a native. He explained the more interesting architecture, buildings, their significance and their role in the city's history, economy and culture. He also has a great sense of humor and managed to entertain us on a personal level as well. We like to use local guides, especially on 1st visits. Damien not only met our expectations, he exceeded them on every criteria. If you book a local tour ask for Demian Sem. You will benefit from his extensive knowledge and interestig delivery.Nowhere before did I feel the sense of real Italy than in the back streets of Trieste - small lovely restaurants, amazingly friendly people and old cobblestone streets made it a day to remember.

Our Italian friends to us hear to have a spot of lunch before we went back home to the UK. The food was very good and plentiful, started with a selection of Italian meats, cheese and bread, followed Veal Milanese which was very filling also this was the first time I have eaten veal, then I had apple strudel which was great, we all had different meals but nothing was left. The place was situated in grounds that are suited for children, as they a very large play area for them.Der Guide Damian war sehr angenehm in seiner Art und kompetent, uns einen guten Überblick und ein paar Insiderinfos zu vermitteln. Genau, was wir erwartet hatten.
