Day 1: Rainbow Beach to Lake McKenzie
Stop At: Rainbow Beach, Rainbow Beach, Gympie Region, Fraser Coast, Queensland
The morning starts bright & early with our compulsory tour briefing at 7 am sharp at Freedom Hostel, to receive comprehensive information to prepare you for this exciting journey.
Here you will be placed into groups and have the opportunity to organise luggage storage. You will also be taught how to drive safely on Fraser Island ahead of your big adventure!
We aim to depart Freedom Hostel for K'gari (Fraser Island) by 8:30 am, which can take approximately 10 minutes to drive to the barge (ferry). The barge crossing is approximately 15 minutes, and during that time, you may be lucky enough to spot Dolphins or other marine life before arriving on the world’s largest sand island.
Once you arrive, you’ll be traversing the eastern beach - K'gari's (Fraser Islands) own highway with speed limits! Settle in for the journey and enjoy the views as we head north along the beach before stopping for morning tea at one of the many freshwater creeks found on the island.

The tour was fantastic!!! Right from the briefing through to the guide, the driving and organisation of it all. The briefing goes into the safety aspects and aboriginal culture, also how to drive the 4x4 vehicles. You can drive if you are over 21years old, have held your licence (foreign is ok) for 1 year and have it with you. They covered covid really really well! Social distancing and sanitation of hands too. There was sanitiser in all vehicles and every time you got back in the made us do it. We went to champagne pools, drove on 75mile beach and went to maheno shipwreck, Eli creek and lake Mackenzie. All beautiful and around 1hr 30 spent at each place apart from Eli and maheno where we spent 30 mins at each roughly which is all you need for pictures. Camp site k'gari was brilliant- hammocks tents and seats kept dry by a tarp, q camp kitchen outdoor hut with bbq, gas, sinks and tables/benches to eat off. The seats had foam mattresses in them and they gave us brand new sleeping bags as ours was the first tour since covid. We had a camp fire all night long and went to the beach which is a 5 minute walk to see the stars...the most unreal thing I have ever seen in my whole life. It was amazing. There are dingos around so you have to watch out, take a torch and a dingo stick with you in case they come out and towards you. The food was unreal!!! Lunch was make your own sandwiches with chicken and salads all fresh and cut up laid out for you. Dinner was steaks on the bbq with slaw, salads, jacket potatoes and it was amazing!!! Breakfast was bacon egg and cheese now sandwiches with muffins fruit cereal and juice tea and coffee-all laid out again. Easy life. Our tour guide was benny he was great, he is so real and not fake at all. True Aussie bloke and knows his stuff. You felt safe with his knowledge of 4x4 and the animals etc. Tips- no signal on the island sometimes a tiny bit with Telstra, you can play your music in the vehicle o make sure you have it down loaded and it's not online, but booze before you go as the island is expensive, make sure you bring $2 coins for the showers or you won't be able to shower. Overall amazing experience and highly recommend!!We have just returned from a 2 day - 1 night trip to Fraser Island. We have just returned from a 2 day - 1 night trip to Fraser Island. We arrived on Fraser Island expectant and excited as we had only read good reviews about the trip. Unfortunately, this was not fulfilled to any degree. Firstly, we spent half of the first day in transportation, with minimal time at Lake McKenzie. When we arrived at the camp, we were surprised. We had to sleep in a tent with no ground sheet or pillow - just a sleeping bag, which is not acceptable when you pay 500 aud for the trip. Secondly, the voucher said that food was included in the price, which we assumed was made for you. However, we also had to do this ourselves. We had bad wraps for dinner - and for the evening meal we had to cook our own steaks. Breakfast the next day was also on our own. In addition, there was always uncertainty among everyone about what to do next, as our guide never really informed us about anything. Even when we asked when we had to get up, he had no answer. Furthermore, the 4WD cars you drove in were completely packed, as you had to be 8 people in each car. Not very comfortable when you spend so many hours in the car for transportation. This leads to our question: what is our paid 500 aud being used for? We didn't get any service or acceptable sleeping conditions. Several of the guests we spoke to on the trip also expressed their dissatisfaction and couldn't understand how the trip could be so expensive with such scandalous conditions. We would never recommend this trip to anyone else and we are also passing this information on to our travel agent so that she no longer recommends it. We hope you take this criticism seriously and will improve the conditions and service for your future guests.Tour is overpriced in my opinion. Tour is overpriced in my opinion. It is good fun and the island is beautiful but for spending this amount of money you would expect much better. You have to prepare you own meals (there is barely enough food), sleep on the ground (no mattress or pillow provided), make sure you get your driving time (changing of drivers is not arranged by the supervisors), in the morning they showed up 30min late. On top of that we already returned to Rainbow Beach before 2pm whereas they advertise between 3:30 and 4:30.The adventure started with a short briefing about security and basic information about the island and the environment were given. The adventure started with a short briefing about security and basic information about the island and the environment were given. Well prepared and full of high spirits we jumped in the cars and started the bumpy ride to Fraser Island. We had a really good time and met so many beautiful people in all ages from 18 to 40 - it‘s been an adventurous big family of 17. The nature on the island is so unique and impressive, our favourite place was Lake McKenzie with its crystal clear water. Our tour guide Beaver was the best „big brother“ we could have asked for- he was super easy, afforded us an amazing experience and always cared for our wellbeing. The tour is definitely suitable for anyone who is up for exciting car drives along the beach, comfortable camp nights and campfires, beautiful sunsets, yummy food, stunning views, unique nature, amazing people and heaps of FUN. Check it out! Cheers, Hannah & MalinaHad the most amazing two day glamping tour. The accommodation was excellent and the food was superb. Had the most amazing two day glamping tour. The accommodation was excellent and the food was superb. The two days were jam packed with incredible activities (our favourite being lake Mackenzie) and our tour guide Jacob was not only an excellent chef but had a wealth of knowledge of the island and his passion rivaled that of Steve Irwin if you will. The tour was great for people and couples of all ages. Would highly recommend this tour and would certainly do it all over again!Me and mr partner did the 2 day, 1 night glamping tour with Jacob. Me and mr partner did the 2 day, 1 night glamping tour with Jacob. It was the BEST 2 days of my life! We floated down Eli Creek, a beautiful fresh water stream, saw the shipwreck on the beach, lots of dingos, Lake McKenzie and so much more. He cooked us such delicious food and was so helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Made everyone laugh all day long - even in the rain! The beds were very comfortable and the showering facilities were decent. He made sure we all got turns to be upfront in his car and also those who wanted to drive got the chance to. He definitely made the trip for me and my partner. We also made some great friends who we will keep in touch with now, thanks for the best trip Jacob aka “Dad”. Love Lauren & Jack #car3rules x PS, take lots of bug repellent we got bitten to death!
