Deer Island
Overview
The largest and most popular island is Isla de Venados (Deer Island), located right in the middle of the three. It has the most extensive beach and is the best place in Mazatlan to practice snorkeling, thanks to small waves and crystal clear waters. Isla de Venados is ideal for swimming, jet skiing, banana boating, paddle surfing and also for hiking and exploring on land. Our tour guide Cesar was wonderful and knowledgeable. The kayak experience was lovely, perfect calm conditions and really nice weather. The kayaks, safety equipment, dry bags, paddles, etc were all top notch. This part of the trip lasted about 30 minutes. The hike was not my favorite part. My assessment is that you really need to be a very experienced wilderness hiker to do this trail. Here is why: it was at the end of the rainy season, and the path was extremely overgrown. You could not see where you were putting your feet, and the path was rocky, slippery and dangerous in areas, especially near the top. Granted I am 61 years old, and no longer a mountain goat like I used to be. That said, I made it 8/10ths of the way. When I saw how treacherous the trail became at the top, I decided not to risk my vacation (or an ankle) being stupid. Cesar was great. He (along with my husband) made sure I made it back in one piece. We had worked up a sweat, so was grateful to get in the water and snorkel a bit. I’ve experienced better snorkeling, but this is natural habitat. No one controls it. Cesar had water, juice, apple and some snack food. I was happy with the water. When we asked about restrooms, we were told to go to the palapa restaurant, but they turned me away and said it was for their tours only. Back into the kayaks and a pleasant paddle back to the rendezvous area.Everything about this adventure surpassed my expectation. The van and driver were excellent and right on time. Everything about this adventure surpassed my expectation. The van and driver were excellent and right on time. Our guide to the island was incredible. Kayaking to the island was so nice. The 3 friends I was with had never used a kayak before and they did great and had no problems under the direction of our guide. The hike has breathtaking views! Have your camera charged and ready to go. I would recommend bringing tennis shoes to wear for the hike. Flip flops or going bare foot is fine everywhere else except the hike. They provide each person with a dry bag so you don’t have to worry about your belongings getting wet. All of the equipment is great quality. The kayak, dry bags, towels, and snorkel gear. The snorkel is all one piece that covers your whole face. Way better than the classic goggles and separate mouth piece version. We had a long time to explore while snorkeling and our guide just stayed within view in case we needed anything. I loved being able to do that and not stay in a tight little group the whole time if we didn’t want to. We had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes outdoor activities. Fun day. A not too challenging paddle across the bay followed by a good cing to the top of the mountain island. The guide was great, with knowledge both of the history and mythology of the island. Also had great knowledge of the flora, fauna and animal life. Followed that up with an hour of snorkeling with great equipment. Ended by kayaking back to the mainland. Great funOur guides, Daniel and Sirgio, were amazing. Very chill and accommodating! We were a group of 11 adults, all family, so a lot to manage - both had a great sense of humor and let us take our time. We only wish we had used more sunscreen!!!

We loved this excursion!!! Kayaking from the beach to deer Island wasn't difficult. The hike up to the peak was filled with butterflies and great views. The snorkeling and beach time was also great. Our tour guide was the best we had through our entire stay in Mazatlán. the only negative is I wish our kayaks were more suited to open water. They didn't coast well. other thab that, everything was great!
