Cozumel Cooking Class
Overview
"Alma" is the word for soul in Spanish and it is how authentic Mexican cooking begins. Join Josefina (or Jeronimo, Josefina's son) in her home kitchen for a 3-hour hands-on small-group cooking class (limited to 6 students). Discover and taste the cuisine of Mexico through Josefina's personal family recipes. During this culinary experience you will also get to visit Cozumel's local market. Deepen your cultural knowledge of Mexico by interacting with the local market vendors and then bringing your ingredients home to cook a well-rounded Mexican meal just in time for siesta!

What to expect
In the beginning of class there is a brief introduction in Josefina's home and kitchen. Your recipe selections for the day are based on class size. Classes with 8 students will be cooking the famous Yucatecan dish Cochinita Pibil as the main course (for those that don't eat pork, substitutions can be made). However, classes tend to run small so you will have more flexibility in what you can cook for the day (limited to 8 students).
Around the prep-table, you will peruse Josefina's personal recipe book (note: with purchase of this culinary experience the e-cookbook is included - enjoy over 60 personal recipes from Josefina's home kitchen!) or discuss as a group and decide what to cook as a main dish. Many side dishes will already be pre-selected including how to make handmade tortillas, salsas, guacamole, salads and more!
Following the introduction, you will take a short walk to the local market to pick out some fresh ingredients which you will take back to the house. Not only is her class a fun food thing to do it is also very cultural. The remaining class time you will prepare your meal which you will enjoy at the end of class (although, don't worry, Josefina will have some beverages and snacks to get you through the class).

- A minimum of 2 people per booking is required
- A small amount of walking is involved and on some uneven surfaces, please be aware
- This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund
- This tour/activity will have a maximum of 6 travelers
- Confirmation will be received at time of booking

Met Jerónimo at the Mercado Muncipal. His mom started the cooking class about 29 years ago and he recently took over the responsibilities for the business which our family can say he’s done an amazing job. Walked us through the local market and explained the ingredients in the dishes we would be making today. Short ride to his house and he prepared Pollo Pibil, fresh Guacamole, Pico de Galló, Tomatillo salsa, a delicious Nopal and Mango salad and lastly our favorite Sikil Pa’ak a traditional Mayan dip. All the food was delicious and prepared with care and love. This tour is made for small groups and is definitely a must do when you’re in Cozumel.Michael C

This was one of the best experiences I've ever had on vacation. Josafina is an amazingly strong person and extremely knowledgeable in her craft. If you enjoy cooking or traditional Mexican cuisine then this is the class you want to take. Its always been a dream of mine to learn to cook in the traditional style of Mexican cuisine from inside the home of an Abuela. Not only did it make a dream of mine into reality, but getting to go to the Mercado Municipal and be guided by Josefina through it, was enlightening. I have been eating Mexican food for over 2 decades and cooking for almost as long and this was by far the best representation of traditional food I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Not only did I learn the steps and techniques required to make the dishes, she also has all of her recipes written down with such care into her own recipe book that is avalible to purchase. The food is made with love and it shows the heart and soul put into the food in ever chop, sizzle, and stir. It was absolutely perfect!Bruce_F

Josephine is amazing. She took us to the market to pick out our fish and vegetables. We went back to her house and she taught us how to create a whole meal. It was amazing.
