From Cluj, you will be heading to the northwestern part of Romania, Maramureș, a region resembling a fascinating open-air museum. Lacking rights and privileges for hundreds of years, the dwellers of these places have managed to overcome hardship by following two simple rules: live your life to the full and cherish, above all, the richness of the soul.
Maramureș people are considered to be the most hospitable Romanians and their traditional wooden houses are a living part of their history. You will visit Breb, one of the best preserved traditional villages in Maramures and explore the local's way of living by coming in contact with them and visiting an authentic house. For lunch, you will enjoy fresh products and delicious fruity liqueurs.

The Tower shelters a museum of medieval weapons and a torture chamber. After visiting the tower we’ll climb the three hundred wooden steps up to the Church-on-the-Hill, built in the XIV century.

We booked a private 8 day tour of Romania with Rolandia Tours and they did a fabulous job of making sure we had the best time ever!! They lined us up with a Tour Guide name Laurentiu. He was fantastic!!! He was extremely knowledgable of all the places we visited throughout Romania. It was all natural for him and it was not scripted and he knew the history of each sight. He was very laid back and was never in a rush. He had a great personality and a good sense of humor. He made our entire trip fun and interesting. He took us to all of the main sights on our itinerary, as well as some off the beaten path sights. We got a true understanding and feeling of what life in Romania is all about. The hotels they booked us in were all conveniently located to all of the main attractions and were all unique boutique type hotels. Lauentui knew where all the great restaurants were along the way and we ate like kings and the food was excellent. Romania is a vast and beautiful country. Everything ran smooth and was perfect. We had the best time anyone could ever ask for. We would highly recommend Rolandia and Laurentiu for all your travel needs throughout Romania. We were traveling to Romania for our son’s wedding and wanted to learn and explore as much as possible the week before. We were traveling to Romania for our son’s wedding and wanted to learn and explore as much as possible the week before. We took the small group Classic Romanian Tour and we would highly recommend this tour. It is a well-organized fast paced tour covering a lot of the country but you are never bored with interesting stops, beautiful scenery and a wonderful tour guide -Alex-who is kind, incredibly knowledgeable, great driver and willing to put up with our endless stream of questions. The hotels were perfectly situated for exploring and comfortable with good breakfasts. Romania is a beautiful country with a long and complicated history this tour is a great introduction and you will be in good hands with Rolandia.I first booked this tour back in 2019 before the pandemic rocked the world. I first booked this tour back in 2019 before the pandemic rocked the world. At that time, I had been reassured that Rolandia would respect the conditions of my reservation despite the policy of the third party through which I had booked my tour. 2.5 years later, I was finally able to join the classic tour with one other woman. I had a rocky start because not much was communicated about my first day and how my arrival time which I had provided a couple of weeks in advance of the tour meant that I would not be able to take part in the first day. However, Rolandia worked throughout the duration of my tour to ensure that I could enjoy the city tour and the Spring Palace in Bucharest before I flew out on the last day of my tour. Though I didn't have the opportunity to see the Palace of Parliament, the Spring Palace/ House of the Ceausescu family was a great if not better alternative. The rest of the tour was a great introduction to the many highlights of Romania - beautiful, green countryside, impressive churches, castles, and palaces - as well as the history and culture of the nation. We had opportunities to meet a few people from different regions, which provided a tiny bit of insight into the local people as well. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and did his best to accommodate our interests and visit everything on our extensive itinerary. However, I think that it is important for a guide to take on a more neutral tone when discussing the various ethnic and national groups involved in Romanian's history and current reality. Whatever an individual's personal opinions about different groups and how tour guides should relate to customers, I think that antagonism toward different groups should be kept out of the conversation because with customers coming from various different backgrounds, you can't know how such talk will make them feel throughout the tour. I personally just shut down and honestly feel more negatively about such people and the people they claim to represent. Perhaps that kind of talk suits older customers who likely think the same way, but I am from a new age. But the tour itself was executed well and I had the privilege of a wealth of information from my guides. This September I opted to join Rolandia's 8-day Classic Tour as I was attracted by its comprehensive itinerary, and boy, I wasn't disappointed! This September I opted to join Rolandia's 8-day Classic Tour as I was attracted by its comprehensive itinerary, and boy, I wasn't disappointed! Its programme is indeed well-conceived, allowing you to gain a deep understanding of the country's history, geography, culture and traditions. It is also a thorough one, covering some of the best urban, rural and mountainous areas. Furthermore, activities are foreseen that give you the opportunity to interact with locals of different backgrounds, thereby gaining insight of life in the country. Although the itinerary is quite a packed one, there's still enough downtime set aside in the evening to recharge your batteries. The group was also a small one, which I found to be quite positive. We were blessed with the best guide imaginable - Nicu. He is a punctual, very knowledgeable, down to earth, fluent person with a great sense of humour, who goes out of his way to ensure you have the best possible experience in his country. He was also our driver throughout the whole week, and I felt very safe as a passenger. Communication with the tour manager Nicu A. was also a very positive experience. I highly recommend travelling with this local tour operator. You're in for a treat! ;)The Classic Romania tour that I joined in June 2019 was one of the best travelling experiences I've had. The Classic Romania tour that I joined in June 2019 was one of the best travelling experiences I've had. There was a group of 8 who, together with Claudia (who was just the best guide imaginable), laughed and drank our way through Romanian towns and villages and forests for 8 wonderful, sunny days. Perhaps we were lucky that we were all so relaxed and well suited; perhaps it was that Claudia was such a knowledgeable and outgoing guide; perhaps Romania is just such a beautiful place; perhaps the accommodation was so well chosen and the food so good; perhaps it was all of those things and more. I recommend this tour without reservation. I'd do it again.
