Richard was great during this class, teaching us how to hold the paint brush correctly and allowing us to practice plenty before painting the symbol of the dragon! If you’re in Beijing and looking for something fun to do sign up for this class.

Our teacher Richard took great care of us with our calligraphy lesson. We were late as our bus back from the Great Wall was late, and even though we missed 40 mins, Richard stayed late and started our 1.5hr lesson when we arrived. Be mindful that the location on Viator is not the exact location. It takes you to the road, but pay attention to the building numbers. It is in the arts centre and shares an entrance with mixed martial arts club. There are restaurants either side. Would have been useful for us to know. We did get a message to help us though and Richard came out to the street to find us. Thank you Richard for a wonderful lessonOne of the highlights of my trip to Beijing. One of the highlights of my trip to Beijing. I highly recommend this place. It’s an excellent experience if you’re looking to take a deeper dive into Chinese culture and what more beautiful way to do it than a calligraphy class with Richard, a master of this art. Richard is very patient, gave good feedback to help us improve throughout the class and made the experience fun. The class was also correctly paced for the audience and was an absolute pleasure to be in. I didn’t want it to end and I’ll be back soon! Why not break the well-worn path of hotel, restaurant, tour...copy past repeat and step outside your comfort zone to learn a little about the culture. Why not break the well-worn path of hotel, restaurant, tour...copy past repeat and step outside your comfort zone to learn a little about the culture. This class is an awesome first step in doing just that. Taking caligraphy was the best first step to understanding what is behind the Chinese characters....yes, really! Richard's class breaks down each character into their individual stroke giving you the opportunity to learn a new skill and think DIFFERENTLY about what otherwise looks like cipher coded signs. The instructor knows the exact pace to move your through the strokes so by the end of the class you can paint 5 different symbols and take a personalized creation home for a memory. Logistics...class is held inside a hotel lobby and in the winter the temperature is cool...so dress accordingly. No worries about getting paint on your clothes, your hands are another matter. Great for all ages...I went with my wife and we shared a class with a family!I took the sunrise calligraphy class with Richard on the morning after I arrived from the USA...it was perfect because I was already awake and needed something cool to kick off my visit to China. I took the sunrise calligraphy class with Richard on the morning after I arrived from the USA...it was perfect because I was already awake and needed something cool to kick off my visit to China. Richard was very patient with me and taught me how to prepare (be loose like water!) and then started slowly with the various strokes. I must say that this was much, much harder than I thought it would be but very fun. Richard's passion for calligraphy after 30 years of practice is obvious. I liked that he was strict and made me practice until I got it right. Highly recommend this as a fun, economical, and unique activity.
