Fascinating, nostalgic and memorable sums up this full day tour to Kanchanaburi, 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Bangkok. The province itself is an agricultural area with sugar cane, rice paddies and pineapple plantations all forming significant portions of the stunning Thai rural landscape. Whether a war buff or rail enthusiast, everyone has a different reason to see this symbolic bridge.
The famous bridge and the beginning of the 'Death Railway', which lies 1 mile outside the town of Kanchanaburi, is a poignant reminder of the thousands of POW's and forced laborers who lost their lives in the Second World War. The building of the bridge in 1943 was one part of a huge Japanese wartime project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a direct route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in an effort to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. Thousands of POW's and laborers died in the process. During your tour a visit will be made to one of the Allied War Grave cemeteries (often an emotional experience) before visiting the JEATH war museum, which houses pictures and paintings from this period.
An exhilarating long tailed speed boat ride will then take you down river to the famous bridge itself where you have ample time to explore at your own leisure. A ride on a local train is also included before returning to Bangkok city.

Our wonderful guide explained all about the River Kwai, the history, the war and the politics involved. She took care of us all the way, made sure we were in the right place at the right time. I was even taken care with a delicious alternate meal due to dietary issues at our restaurant. Our comfort was provided for when she gave us masks for the dust on the train. All in all a great experience.Disappointed in Jeath museum- some of the money they receive from the visits should be reinvested in the exhibits as they are deteriorating alarmingly. Our guide Tum Tum was good fun and looked after us well.

Viatour is usually a very good reliable tour company but in this instance it was a huge disappointment. The van was old and dented with over 750,000 on the odometer . There were even footprints on the ceiling. There were no shocks and so the ride was extremely uncomfortable. Not even a bottle of water was provided for an 8 hour tour. The guide had no mic so as were were sitting in the very back in we were not able to hear any commentary, though from what we observed there was very little. He even donned a neck cushion and napped on the return drive to Bangkok. The actual site has been upgraded so much so that it is more of a tourist site than an historical one. The cemetery of the Allied soldiers is very important and emotional for all those young lives lost however we were only allowed 10 minutes there. I submitted a complaint to Viatours but never received a reply.Well organised trip Knoledgeble guide Museum was a disappointment Value for money Filling some space
