This was my second trip with Marcelo. He is passionate and focused. We spotted ~200 species in 2 days. Both days were sunrise to late afternoon. I would 100% recommend Marcelo for your Ecuadorian birding trip. You will NOT see as much without a guide, and he is the best.

We are rank amateurs, and had the luck of a private session for the two of us. On-time start at 6.30 am, and good transport. Cost about $35 usd per person for the two of us. A bargain for what we got. Spotted 13 species. He is calm and focused. He spots birds in the foliage, sets up his spotting scope on target, and gets you looking in about 3 seconds. He takes great pictures with your phone through his scope. Has binoculars if you need them. We went up the dirt road that also goes to the zip lines and cable ride. At first we expected to hike on a remote trail, and were surprised to be walking on the road for bird spotting. But the road gave us a more open view of the trees than a narrow trail would have. There was no traffic until about 10.30, and even then there were only about 3 cars that came through. On the way back in the pickup truck, he spotted an owl which was well blended in with the tree trunk. He had the driver stop and set up the spotting scope. This bonus at the end typifies Marcelo’s expertise and client focus. Highly recommended. Best guide we have ever had.We spent 7 days birding with Marcelo. We spent 7 days birding with Marcelo. He was an enthusiastic guide, and very knowledgeable. We probably were not good enough birders to deserve such long all-day trips and his expertise. We arranged all through Las Terrazas de Dana Lodge which handled all the payments and details, including lunches at some very nice places along the way. It was probably a good idea to book through the lodge, which imeant we didn't have to deal with money during the entire week. Marcelo often spotted birds before the other guides when we were in places with other birders. He also took us to places where we were the only people around. We did not carry heavy cameras, so were able to do quite a bit of walking. We did spend a lot of time driving to places (on very rough roads). I think our latest departure time was 5:30 a.m. and we sometimes didn't arrive back until 5:30 p.m. He got rubber boots for us to wear the day we went in search of the Umbrella bird, and they were definitely needed for that trip. I definitely recommend Marcelo as a guide.I should start by saying we are far from being experienced birders, but we decided to do a two-day trip to Mindo and booked a bird tour. I should start by saying we are far from being experienced birders, but we decided to do a two-day trip to Mindo and booked a bird tour. On the morning, it was pouring rain, and we were not very hopeful. But Marcelo brought us to a (protected) balcony from where - even in the rain - we were able to see a variety of birds, including the Quetzal. As he predicted, the rain eventually abated and we went for a walk, seeing many toucans and other types of birds. Thankfully he was there to spot them, because otherwise I am quite convinced we wouldn't have seen much at all. Since I speak a bit of Spanish, it was also great to be able to talk to him about life in Mindo, his family, and other interesting subjects. Thanks Marcelo! We called him and could make an appointment right away for the next day. He organised a car which took us on a stunning plattform with a great view. We called him and could make an appointment right away for the next day. He organised a car which took us on a stunning plattform with a great view. The equipment was very professional one big telescope (LEICA Objective) and binoculars. We had enough time to observe and spot bird by ourselves, but in the meantime he was spotting the really big ones (hawks, tucans, etc.). He provided us with a lot of information (in English) and he took photos with our cell phones via the telescope (they look absolutely amazing and exact. Eventhough we are not the most exited people about birds in general, this tour is recommendable for everyone who enjoys nature, animals, peace and a good time learning about Equadors wild life. Also it was very private and peaceful atmosphere. Thank you very much Marcelo! Also worth mentioning: Marcelo has a project where he works with Mindo´s teenagers (most of them very poor). Here he teaches them about birds, so they have opportunities for working in their future with tourists and giving them a purpose. My husband and I went on a couple of birdwatching walks with Marcelo Arias, and what a wonderful experience. My husband and I went on a couple of birdwatching walks with Marcelo Arias, and what a wonderful experience. In the morning tour (starting at 6:00 am), we saw various kinds of toucans, parrots, woodpeckers and countless number of birds. In the afternoon, he took us to s wonderful reserve to see cock-of-the-rock, and we also spotted the quetzal. Marcelo is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about birds, and has an incredible 6th sense to spot and attract them, and is very helpful with picture taking. Highly recommended"!
