Our day got off to a bad start when we arrived at our hotel lobby at 8:01 am to be told by our hotel staff that the tour had just left without us. What?? Granted, we were guilty of being late, if only by literally one minute. But I wish they had called my cellphone like we'd established over the phone the night before if they needed to contact me on the day. As a result, we had to wait in the lobby for another 35 minutes as they picked up the other three parties before coming around again to get us. Everyone’s time could have been saved if they’d called my phone like they said they would. With that out of the way, here’s The Good: This tour is a jam-packed, full day of activities that I think would be difficult for your average tourist to get to on their own. It offers good value for money. The cloud forest was a highlight of the trip– just gorgeous. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the guide and the driver did their best to keep us comfortable during the trip, with bathroom breaks, bottled water and umbrellas provided when needed. The vegan lunch that we requested was delicious, with generous portions. And the snacks sold at the market that served as the last stop of the trip were delicious too. We learned a lot. The Bad: When we were supposed to visit the pagodas at the end, it started pouring rain. Of course this isn’t the fault of the tour, but as a result most of us decided to skip the pagodas and wait in the van for those who decided to continue on. (They later reported back that it was so foggy that it was hard to see much.) Anyway, I wish our driver had chosen a place to relieve himself that wasn’t clearly visible from our van while we were sitting in it waiting. Yuck. Also, the hygiene standards in the bathrooms weren’t the best, but that’s to be expected here in Thailand I guess. The Complicated: The visit to the Karen village left us feeling a lot of things. We started by crowding around two elderly women as they wove scarves in the traditional way, sitting on the dirt floor. People took pictures of them like animals in a zoo. They must encounter countless tour groups like ours, day in and day out. I asked the guide how these people feel about tourists coming every day, and they said they like it, because it’s how they make money. But surely we can support these people in a way that feels less exploitative, and also lifts them out of poverty. As I said earlier, the sanitation standards that I could see could definitely be improved. In the end, I’m glad I went on this tour and would recommend it to others. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the steps at the waterfall can be slippery and treacherous. Bring a jacket as it gets cold at the top of the mountain. Don’t drink too much so you can avoid using the restrooms. And do not arrive even one minute late, lol.Nui was a fantastic tour guide. 10/10 would love to be brought around by her again, and would definitely recommend this experience to friends. To anyone considering this tour, be assured that it is professional, comfortable, and educational. Food provided is amazing too.

This tour was perfect! The only downside were the clouds on top of the mountain, but that was also a spectacular thing to see.
