Having enjoyed very professional chamber group performances in Vienna the previous two evenings, I was looking forward to another evening of similar in Salzburg. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The setting was magnificent and promised atmosphere but the performers were lacklustre, appeared disinterested and even bored with the event. They neither engaged with the audience nor each other but played as four individuals rather than an ensemble. In every ‘forte’ section, the cellist continually bounced his bow off the nearest open string, creating an unpleasant drone and dissonance. He appeared oblivious. This continued throughout the concert. The first violinist was a good player but managed to look thoroughly fed up and rarely looked at the other players. Not good practice when leading a chamber group. As a violinist and pianist, I recognise good musicianship. I was looking forward to the Haydn concerto but the pianist destroyed it. She entered at a completely different tempo to the quartet and proceeded to hammer out the notes in the style of a high school student. Her performance was shocking in so many ways; she seemed unable to maintain a steady tempo, skipped notes in her runs due to rushing through them, rode the pedal as it was raised too high for her to release and presented the piece in a style more like Beethoven than Haydn. To top it all, the piano needed tuning. I was tempted to ask for my money back but this was part of a gift from my husband and I’m only sorry he had to sit through this very unprofessional performance with me.My husband and I were visiting Salzburg for a short city trip during the week. My husband and I were visiting Salzburg for a short city trip during the week. The topmost item on my bucketlist was to visit a live mozart concert. I found it difficult to find out what the differences were between the different concerts and venues. Information online was scarce and the official website only provided general information. The fortress seemed to bethe most impressive one, which is why we chose to book the tickets for this concert. We would have preferred to see a full orchestra, however during the week it is only possible to see a smaller ensemble. It was possible to go up to the fortress by cable car (for free) an hour before the concert started. Half an hour before would have probably been enough, as most parts of the fortress are quite dark and/or closed. To reach the venue, one has to climb several stairs, therefore impossible for anyone in a wheelchair or any other handicap to reach. We paid a little extra to get good seats in the first 6 rows. As we were one of the first ones to arrive we got very good seats in the first row. The programme costs an extra 2 Euros and the concert takes about 90 minutes. In total there were 6 very talented musicians playing a variety of classics. To my surprise, perhaps also my own ignorance, there was noone announcing or introducing the musicians or the songs. The musicians remained silent throughout the concert and only once in a while was it appropriate to clap. This was only when the musicians stood up after every 2-3 songs. The first half was unfortunately not really to our liking, whereas the second half was much better. During the second half it was noticeable that the musicians enjoyed themselves with more upbeat songs and certain classics, and the atmosphere became overall more pleasant. Overall I find it difficult to rate the experience, as the location has a very unique charme and the musicians were undoubtedly very talented, however we did not enjoy the overall atmosphere. The concert was a great way to end the day. Some people were in nice clothes (suits, etc.) but we didn’t have time to change from our sightseeing clothes and didn’t feel out of place at all. -Come as you are and enjoy some good classics.
