Bahrain Pearling Path Experience
Overview
As of 2012, “Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy” has become the second World Heritage Site of the Kingdom of Bahrain as the testimony of its millennia-old pearl collecting tradition and the globally significant single-product island economy and social system it produced.
“Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy” is a serial nomination consisting of 15 property components: three vast oyster beds located in the northern territorial waters of Bahrain, one seashore site at the southern tip of Bahrain’s Muharraq Island, and nine clusters of historic buildings consisting of seventeen architectural structures embedded in the urban fabric of Muharraq city. Taken together, the fifteen individual sites reflect the final expression and last remaining – and thus outstanding – example of a cultural tradition that dominated the Arabian Gulf from prehistory to the early 20th century.

Stop At: Qala't Bu Mahir, 6JR7+GCH, Muharraq, Bahrain
Bu Mahir Fort Originally a solid, four-towered fort with massive defensive walls, Qal’at Bu Mahir dominated the Bu Mahir Seashore and played an essential role in the pearling economy.
Duration: 20 minutes
Stop At: Al Muharraq, Al Muharraq
Bu Mahir Seashore is located at the southernmost tip of Muharraq Island, on what was formerly a tidal island. Largely unchanged since the decline of the pearling economy in the 1930s, it is the only remaining authentic beach where the pearling season’s festivals were celebrated.
Duration: 10 minutes
Stop At: Al Muharraq, Al Muharraq
Al-Ghus House – the pearl diver house -, is thought to have been built by a boat captain (nukhidah), a captain’s second-in-command, or perhaps a master boat builder in the first decade of the 20th century and is said to have been inhabited and used by related divers.
Duration: 10 minutes
Stop At: Muharraq souq, Al Muharraq Bahrain
Running through the heart of Muharraq city, the souq is an atmospheric old Bahraini bazaar where all the needs of daily life are bought and bartered for. Near its southern end, Souq Al Qaisariya is an important part of the heritage pathway and offers a more historic take on the markets of Muharraq.
Stroll through the market offering traditional clothing, jewelry, coffee, spices, and confectionary. Notice a variety of delicious sweets, especially the famous homemade halwa, which is perfect with a cup of qahwa.
Duration: 40 minutes
Stop At: Diyar Al Muharraq, Bahrain
Souq Al Baraha offers 468 retail spaces catering to the needs of all residents and visitors. The project is designed to celebrate the Bahraini traditional architectural style. Set to open in 2021, Souq Al Baraha will offer a family-friendly atmosphere with a local, modern touch. The project is located strategically in the heart of the Kingdom’s newest shopping and entertainment districts, Dragon City Bahrain and opposite to Marassi Galleria, which is set to be the biggest mall in Bahrain.

The tour was awesome and so enlightening about the Bahrain Perling Industry, history and culture. Our tour guide, Khalid, was the best! He was very knowledgeable, gracious and patient with us taking our time on the tour. You get to see a lot more than is featured and sample local foods of interest as well. It is so well worth it! We wish we did our tour earlier in the trip so we could fit in another one.baronVIP
