Itinerary

Stop At: Masaya Volcano National Park, Masaya Nicaragua

Ranked as one of the most active in the world. Masaya volcano 25 km SE from Managua is one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes.

In contrast to most other volcanoes in subduction zones, it has been erupting mainly fluid basaltic lava. At the time of the Spanish Conquistadors, it contained an active lava lake and it is reported that there were attempts to extract the volcano’s molten “gold.”

Masaya is a complex consisting of a 6×11.5 km large caldera with steep, up to 300 m high walls, and a group of young cones at the NW end including Nindirí and Masaya volcano proper. There are multiple summit craters including the currently active Santiago crater, the site of the current activity.

caldera 635 m – 2, 083 ft / Nicaragua, 11.98°N – 86.16°W / Current status: erupting.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Catarina, Catarina, Masaya Department

Catarina is a town close to Masaya, overlooking the Apoyo Lagoon. Catarina is famous for this magnificent observation point of the lagoon, as well as for its nurseries.

The viewpoint of Catarina is one of the highest hills surrounding the Apoyo Lagoon, and the view from there is superb. You can see the whole lagoon as well as Lake Nicaragua behind it. The Mombacho volcano borders the lake and is also prominently present.

The Catarina viewpoint is a popular place among Nicaraguans during weekends, when families and friends gather here to enjoy the view, grab a bite in one of the restaurants, or have a look through one of the telescopes. These visitors attract salesmen and singers who wander around trying to sell their products or songs. The atmosphere still is quite relaxing during the weekend though, and if you really prefer to be here when there are only a few people around you can simply go there during weekdays.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Mombacho Volcano, Granada Nicaragua

This colossal and stunning volcano´s cloud forest offers impressive panoramic views and it is also the home of hundreds of orchids. Mombacho volcano is an active andesitic and basaltic stratovolcano located about 10 km south of the city of Granada, west of Lake Nicaragua and a few kilometers SE of Laguna Apoyo.

A possible historic eruption occurred in 1570, when a debris avalanche destroyed a village on the south side of Mombacho volcano. There are reports of an explosion, but there is no accepted evidence that an eruption did occur.

Current activity consists of fumaroles and hot springs within the 2 collapse scarps and on the upper northern flank.

Stratovolcano 1344 m – 4, 409 ft / Nicaragua, 11.83°N – 85.97°W / Current status: normal or dormant.
