What to expect
Exclusive visit to the wine museum and its winery with wine tasting, bread with focaccia dop and typical local products
Highlights:
Visit to the Wine Museum with wine tasting
Tour details:
Among the alleys of the center you will be surprised to visit the Wine Museum, dating back to 1500, which brings to light the treasures of the Altamurana wine tradition.
Located behind the Altamura’s Cathedral, it is one of the oldest sites in the historic city center.
The fantastic location is divided into two large spaces: On the ground floor, you can admire some special ollection pieces, like the impressive 17th century wood press and a series of utensils and equipment of that age.
With an 8-meter jump, a stairway leads you to the living-stone cave that is the most of this suggestive scenario: temperature and humidity made this an ideal place for wine fermentation and preservation; two wooden barrels with capacity of 40000 and 30000 liters, have been found exactly like now and they are the testimony of the authenticity and the historical treasure of this place.
A detail of the walls shows the result of a centenary work of microscopic streams that put into the walls minerals and oxides. A small trip through the time of hundreds of years where you can feel the sacrifice and
dedication to the work by the old generations.
The tasting will consist of Wine glass of Primitivo of Altamura (bottles aged in the natural stone cave ) a selection of cheeses, focaccia DOP and dairy products

I am going to leave an honest review and not just say the wine museum and tasting was excellent and give 5 stars because for us there was a lot missing. First of all the wine, bread and cheese was exquisite. Honestly some of the best wine and even food we'd tasted. Paulo (apologies if I got the name wrong) was friendly and informative and happily gave us more bread and oil when we asked. Perhaps a little booklet explaining what we were drinking once we were left alone would be useful but that is nitpicking. If that's all we were expecting I would give 5 star and not fault a thing. However, the description of the booking is wine museum and wine tasting. We got the tasting part but nothing else. When reading the booking back and looking at the pictures on the website we expected some sort of actual tour, to see how the wine is made, the large barrels, the history or at least pointed in the direction of the museum. We instead spent the entire time in a room (nicely decorated I'll add) right by the entrance tasting the produce. Before we left we turned right to try and go further into the venue which lead immediately to a small shop and what appeared to be a dead end, so it wasn't glaringly obvious to us that there was anything else to actually see. I don't like being critical and honestly would recommend visiting for the wine and food but I can't give higher than 3 stars because half of what we were expecting didn't happen. Maybe that was just our experience and others will get to see everything.
