The incredible Kailasa Temple (also known as the Kailash Temple), which forms Cave 16 at Ellora, is undoubtedly the most famous attraction. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his sacred abode at Mount Kailash. Its immense size covers twice the area of the Pantheon in Athens, and is one and a half times as high! The life-size elephant sculptures are a highlight. The most incomprehensible thing about the Ajanta and Ellora caves is that they were crafted by hand, with only a hammer and chisel. There are various cave complexes in India, but these are definitely the most spectacular.

This is a very good way to see Ajanta and Ellora in the same day. The driver told us what time we needed to start and how long we could stay so that we could see the all the highlights and still catch our evening flight. It was a busy day and everything worked as expected. I highly recommend this tour for those with only one day to see the area. If you hire a guide at the site, be sure to tell them how much time you want to spend at a specific site (Kailasa Temple) as we did not do this and felt pressed for time near the end.We had been planning this trip for a long time and when we finally decided , we booked a premium room at Taj Aurangabad and found Sher Khan on the net. We had been planning this trip for a long time and when we finally decided , we booked a premium room at Taj Aurangabad and found Sher Khan on the net. He organised an innova crysta with an excellent guide for us. The first day we did Aurangabad caves ..that is a must do .This had quite a bit of walking to do but it was worth the pains..with huge statues of Buddha and a tiny chaitya too. Then we did the Dakkhani Taj or Bibi ka maqbara which stands evidence to the fact how the mughal architecture had decayed within 25 years of Shahjahan's death. Day 2 we started early for Ajanta..with our guide Mr Aijaaz..the most learned guide who has shown William Dalrymple around. Its a two hours drive and the road is nothing to write home about. We took the ramp up to the caves and could negotiate the climb quite well. Each cave is a gem and the paintings are more beautiful than what we had ever imagined. We saw at leisurely pace..studying the finer points and it took nearly 4 hours. Day 3 we did Ellora where Kailasa mesmerised us!we were in awe!! Then the Daultabad fort..though we could not climb beyond Chini mahal where Qutub shahi king Tanashah was kept for 12 years by Aurangzeb. But the piece de resistance is Malik Ambar's tomb..beautiful dark. And stand alone..quite like the man himself! The abyssinian slave who became a force to reckon with in Deccan lies lonesome and its ironical that the man who shaped the politics of Deccan lies forgotten! Its a must visit for anybody who did not sleep through the history lessons! The caves left me in awe, imposing architecture by carving out whole mountains and beautiful paintings still in shape which were built by the erstwhile dwellers of the caves.
