Timgad is an impressive Roman site where one can walk through well-preserved ruins of an old Roman town. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Its Roman name was Thamugadi, and it was believed to have reached a population of up to 15, 000 people, many of who were army veterans. This city was built in about 100 AD under the reign of Emperor Trajan and it was an important center for both Catholic and Donatist Christians.
As you enter the site, you will pass by the museum, which is home to grand mosaics along with other important artifacts found at this site. As you continue walking down the decumanus maximus, or the east-west road, you will pass by one of North Africa’s last remaining ruins of a library. The site also contains a large theatre, the arch of Trajan, temples, and baths. Make sure you do not rush through this expansive site, which awaits your discovery. If you are looking for a great panorama view of Timgad make sure to climb to the top of the theatre.

If you're in this region, I'm assuming a trip to Djemila and/or Timgad is a must do. We did both of these through Algeria Tours 16. It's hard to pick a favorite between the two. While Djemila is more accessible and has the green hillside landscape, Timgad is a special place too as it's all so well laid out in a desert landscape with snow capped mountains luring in the back. Both our driver Haroun and guide Lamia were wonderful warmt-hearted souls who provided excellent company throughout the trip. I'd highly recommend Algeria Tours 16 and a trip to Timgad if in this area!584indritb

Timgad is well worth visiting. It is uniquely different than Djemila. I especially loved walking in the chariot tracks at the entrance :)
