Led by “Speedy Gonzalez”, our city tour included a variety of people from med students to retired docs. Our Gonzo guide told stories with a Portuguese flair of sarcastic humor. Porto’s history is full of conflict for domination by catholic priests, neighboring countries, and other invaders. This barbaric history is sprinkled with wine, namely port. Portugal invented port by fortifying grapes with brandy. Otherwise it would have been vinegar by the time it crossed the Atlantic and the English would not have become the port exporters they are today. We learned how Portugal is intertwined with the Moorish, Celtic, Roman, and several Latin countries. For example, centuries of Roman influence account for the number of words that begin with “Al”, the word Arabic sounds like “a rabbit”. Monasteries have been transformed into police stations, train depots, schools and other public uses. While Porto was founded by Moorish there are few remnants of their mosques as they have been repurposed to castles. medieval monuments were made in the 20th century as a way to promote tourism. We discovered fun architecture facts like the Eiffel Tower was originally to be in Porto or Barcelona. Speaking of architecture, the country’s geography was reformed by an earthquake that was felt in Scandinavia. The country was in flames as the 9.9 quake was in all saints day. The Ottoman influences are evident in everything from language to architecture, from cuisine to commerce. Portugal’s invention of the sextant gave them a head start on exploration and expanded their domination to Spain, Brasil, Madagascar, Macau etc. Japan and Portugal words are similar due to the Portuguese early travels to the Pacific. Outside of Japan, the largest population of Japanese inhabit San pobló. All these fun stories and more can be unplugged when you take a Poro city tour. Be sure to tip your guide generouslyThe anecdotes that the guide was telling while explaining the history of the buildings was the part that interested me the most.

Our tour guide was Maria, She had so much energy, great pride of her home city, and was one of the highlights of our visit to Porto. She took the time to tell us the history of the city as well as recommend where to eat and the best church to see. We have been in country almost a month and this was the first tour we took and we were so glad we did. Impressed with her passion people and English skills.
