We just returned how from one of the most incredible journeys I have every experienced, and I have explored hundreds of cities around the globe. An African Safari has always been a lot the top of my “must do” list, but timing and the expense have always held me back. I saw a deal from Odyssey Safaris in early spring. Needing to celebrate being vaccinated a on nearing the end of my Covid lockdown kidney, my husband and I jumped at the opportunity of taking a trip with reduced fees, affordable airline tickets, and a Covid-safe protocol which meant the trip would be a private tour of the two of us, instead of a group of up to 8 strangers. During booking and up until takeoff, the staff (especially Lucy) was incredibly communicative, quickly answering a barrage of emails about topics from Covid protocols to LGBT travel (a concern as a gay couple in a county that criminalizes homosexuality), to booking additional excursions. The provided checklist of paperwork required — visas, Covid tests, QR code’s, health department forms — was complete and easy to complete. We heard from others we met that they were not provided with such a list, and spent a harried and stressful time in the airport conforming to local Covid rules. After pleasant enough flights, on arrival, we were greeted outside of the airport by Charles, our guide and driver for the week. We had previously been introduced via an email with Charles’s credentials and training. Exhausted from 24 hours if travel, the first night at the Safari Hotel in Kenya was a welcome respite after a day of flying. We woke the next morning to see the beautiful grounds and have a full breakfast. Before the first journey began, we were greeted by Lucy and other staff members for a rundown of the week ahead and to let us know some resorts were upgraded because of Covid closures. They managed all expectations, which I can see being helpful for those expecting a luxury experience. The Taste of Kenya schedule we chose is very nice, but not luxurious. To keep costs down, we were driven around the country from park to park. Yes, you can pay to fly between parks, but you lose any sense of Kenya as a nation — the people, the smells, the markets, the housing, and the struggles of a nation that is expanding at a rapid pace. With driving, you must realize that roads in Kenya are very basic. Paved roads between cities, but in the parks, they range from dirt and gravel roads to dirt paths. When riding off-road, it can be very bumpy. The whole trip takes place in a very nicely appointed Land Cruiser with large tires and sturdy shocks, but the ride is bumpy, and at times, can throw you around. This is not an experience for someone with a bad back or hips, or someone who suffers from car or motion sickness. Our first park was Amboseli. We did not expect to be greeted by so many zebra, elephants, gazelles, monkeys, and giraffes — all in the first two hours! Amboseli requires you to stay on the roads, but the animals are so close, some even came up to the car. Amboseli does not have big cats or crocodiles, but we did see many hippos, flamingos and other water birds, plenty of ostrich and land birds, and in an moment I will never forget — four herds of elephants came together to walk across the plains (and road) in front of us. The majesty of this walk in indescribable. Our resort was upgraded, since the initial resort was closed for Covid. The Serena was elegant and comfortable— and since it is located in the park, you see animals as soon as you leave the compound. Definitely worth an upgrade. After two full days at the park — each with multiple game drives in the morning and evening, we drove on to Lake Naivasha located in the Great Rift. I’ll be honest, the lake and the Sopa Resort were less impressive than described, but the day trip to national park at Lake Nakuru was absolutely amazing. We saw our first Musk Ox, Lions, White Rhinos, and the spectacular Rothschild Giraffes, who are larger than the more common Maasai Giraffe, with stunning white legs. When we return in the future (and we will), we will forget Naivasha and do two days of drives at Nakuru. The smaller park is full of animals in many difference settings, from plains to rainforest to the stunning lake. The last stop was three days in the most famous of Kenya’s parks — Maasai Mara. We lucked out, as on our first drive in, we saw a brotherhood of five Cheetahs, a pride of 10 lions (2 males and 8 females), and stumbled upon an elegant Leopard. We were very lucky to see all of these — especially in a single drive. We found out from others that they had been searching for the leopard for days, and were a little jealous of us. The second day of drives was less successful — but that is expected. These are natural parks, but zoos. That said, we saw a team of Crocodiles rip apart a previously passed Hippo, Elephants, Wildebeests, Gazelles, Topi, Jackals, Hares, Hyenas, Giraffes, Mongoose, and countless birds. The vastness of Maasai Mara is breathtaking — as far as you can see, for dozens of miles. We booked two exceptional add-one. The sunrise hot air balloon ride gave us a very different perspective on the Mara. Floating from between 400’ to just a dozen or so above the ground, we were able to spot many animals hiding in the tall grass, and see the hundreds of paths cut by the off-road vehicles. The hilltop breakfast that followed was something out of a travel magazine — a hot breakfast compete with a formally set clothes table, champagne and Bloody Mary’s, and even a “Loo with a View.” All top notch, and all very extravagant. That evening, we booked a Sunsetter. We expected a few cocktails in a nice area of the hotel and a plate of nibbles. What we experienced was another luxury experience with chatting dishes of hot snacks, a full bar, and a wait staff to serve you while you sit and watch the stunning sunset. It was truly one of the most romantic evenings of our lives, and something we can never forget. The Ashnil Camp at Maasai Mara was elegant and complete. The staff was attentive and warm, and the meals delicious. When you drive through the plains and hills of the Mara, you see nothing for miles (but animals). Approaching the camp, you see nothing until you drive through a grove of trees — which ends in a gated resort, complete with a swimming pool, massage and spa, a reasonably priced gift shop, and views of the hippos while you enjoy breakfast and lunch. The rooms themselves were well appointed and comfortable. Truly an oasis. Our final drive out of the park was disappointing, as between the tall grass and the increased heat, few animals were out. Again — it’s all a crap shoot, but with an incredible guide like Charles, he was able to track footprints, speak to other drivers, and use his decades of experience and intuition to locate game which few others found. Charles stayed with us until dropping us off at the airport well past the time normally scheduled for the trip, so we took our time driving back to Nairobi by stopping at a Maasai market, and taking him for a well-deserved celebratory dinner at a fine restaurant. Overall, the week was an incredible experience, and one we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We will return with friends — they need to be touched by the majesty and awe of these amazing animals as we had been. My takeaways for those considering the trip: 1) Odyssey Safaris was a pleasure to work with, and we will book more trips through them 2) Take advantage of the upgrades and excursions — they only add to the experience and your ability to relax and truly envelop yourself, and 3) Have an open mind — Hakuna Matatta.Phenomenal experience that was above and beyond our expectations. Phenomenal experience that was above and beyond our expectations. Rating: I contacted the office several times before our trip with questions and for assistance on the Visa application and always found the office staff to be very helpful. When we arrived in Nairobi we were met by our driver and guide for the week, Erastus. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and considerate of our needs and interests. The hotel accommodations and meals were all exceptional, we found e veryone we met in Kenya to be friendly. The game drives always produced great sightings, hundreds of wonderful photographs and new understanding about the various animals, all thanks to our skilled driver. We would highly recommend both our driver Erastus and Odyssey Safari as a whole. It was the trip of a lifetime.Just returned from the "trip of a life-time". This trip exceeded my expectations. Just returned from the "trip of a life-time". This trip exceeded my expectations. I had purchased this tour through Groupon which made me a bit apprehensive due to the discounted price. Communications with Odyssey Safaris was excellent from the beginning and throughout the tour. I had made arrangements to arrive a day early so I could tour the city of Nairobi. So glad that I did this as I enjoyed seeing the Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Sanctuary, the Nairobi National Museum and the rest of the center city. This actual safari tour did involve a lot of driving, but so well-worth it as we were able to go to three different game drive areas: Amboselli National Park, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara. Each game drive was unique and we were so lucky to have seen "The Big Five" as well as hundreds of other animals. Our driver/guide Steve was amazing and made sure we got to each hotel and game drive safely with his skillful driving. Not to mention his outstanding ability to locate the animals on the game drives. The hotels we stayed in were very nice and the food provided was very good. There seemed to be something for everyone (and I am a picky eater). My personal favorite was the Ashnil Tented Camp. It truly made me feel like I was in the middle of it all. Laying in bed listening to the various animal sounds was so exciting. Be sure to inquire about the possibility of getting a fan for your rooms as it did remain warm at night. I did take advantage of the optional tours of the Masai tribe village, boat tour and Cresent Island tour which were all wonderful and well-worth the extra time and money. I added on 4 nights in Zanzibar. This is a beautiful island with lots to do and see. I toured Stonetown, visited a Spice Farm, had a massage at the Mrembo Spa and dinner at the Emerson Hotel (in Stonetown) upon it's rooftop for a terrific view of the sunset while eating a delicious dinner. I also took a snorkeling trip with Safari Blue which was fantastic. I did take one day just to hang out at the BlueBay Beach Resort that I was staying at. This was a very well-planned and organized safari tour. Do not hesitate to use this company if you are considering going on a safari.Re: Kenyan Trip Mike & Linda Robinson With MUCH APPRECIATION for all the assistance in making this an OUTSTANDING TRIP! Re: Kenyan Trip Mike & Linda Robinson With MUCH APPRECIATION for all the assistance in making this an OUTSTANDING TRIP! Preparation assistance was excellent. Assistance upon arrival and accommodations throughout the trip were excellent. Our guide, Erastus Ngungu, was MORE than excellent. In all of our travels, we’ve never had a better guide. His knowledge of the animals and where to find them was very apparent as we could see the other guides looking to him for advice. His is an incredible asset to Odyssey. And this does even take into his outstanding driving abilities on the road. We never felt less than safe and any time…even with the infamous Nairobi traffic. We would definitely advise the tours we took of the Karen Blixen Museum, the Crescent Island Tour and the Masai Village Tour near Amboseli National Park.We just returned from our second Kenyan Safari with Odyssey. We just returned from our second Kenyan Safari with Odyssey. When we decided we wanted to return there was no doubt that we would be booking again with Odyssey. This experience is out of this world! Mark and his wonderful staff make sure every detail is taken care of before you embark on your journey. Thank you Beatrice for your prompt correspondence and patience through out our planning and booking. The safari itself could not have gone any smoother. Every aspect of our journey went on without a hitch from the moment we were met at the airport until the moment we were dropped off at the airport. You get a personal driver for the length of your trip in an amazing customized Land Cruiser. Charles was our driver this round and he was an incredible driver and guide. No obstacle was a match for Charles and our beast of a vehicle! Our accommodations along the trip were second to none. I never expect to find so much luxury and comfort out in the bush, but it’s there. Thank you for making this a second trip of a lifetime! We’ll be back. Our safari was absolutely amazing! Our safari was absolutely amazing! After landing in Nairobi and going through immigration we were met by our guide, Charles. Charles was very friendly and delivered us safely to our first resort. Our only regret was not having more time to explore Nairobi. We definitely missed out on seeing the elephant orphanage and Karen Blixen museum. The following morning Charles arrived on time and ready to drive us to Lake Naivasha. This Sopa Resort was absolutely gorgeous. The grounds were pristine and our accommodations were more than we expected. To be able to walk around with the animals running free was truly an awe inspiring event. After an amazing overnight stay, Charles arrived on time the following morning to drive us to the Ashnil tented camp. The ride was long and somewhat tedious, but Charles was very informative and his sense of humor kept the long journey surprisingly pleasant. Our stop to see the Masai tribe was another thrill along the way. Upon entering Masai Mara you whole world is turned upside down. This reserve is truly God's country. The natural beauty of the land combined with the freedom of so many species of wildlife is beyond words. Charles picked us up promptly at 7am, for the next two mornings. Our game drives with him were spectacular. He made sure we saw THE BIG 5 and many many more animals. His experience proved to be very useful when finding the elusive rhino. Unfortunately, our trip was over. We were very sad to leave. In hindsight, we should have booked this trip for several days longer. We would definitely rate this safari with 5 stars. The food, resorts and transportation were exceptional. Our guide, Charles was fun, knowledgable and kept us safe! All of the staff at the three resorts were courteous, friendly and went out of their way to make you feel at home. We would definitely recommend Odyssey Safaris and also Charles, as your guide.
