What to expect

Lessons are two hours in length, and start with a 20 minute pre-surf lesson in ocean safety, basic surf technique, etiquette, and most importantly: mindset.
Then we head to the water to spend the remainder of the lesson riding waves and improving your skills. Whether you're brand new or intermediate we promise to take your surfing to the next level. We focus on how to learn to dance with the ocean and go with the flow, so you're not only learning to surf, you're learning valuable life lessons as well.

The instructors are extremely careful, explaining all the rules of surfing safety. The class is very well structured, I liked the fact that there was a reading of the sea before entering. I understand why it is called "surf as life therapy" , because you can really feel this during the lesson. I also appreciated the encouragement given by the instructor. I will definitely repeat the experience. I truly felt my surfing evolve after the corrections made by the instructor.ronnyi906

In addition to his training, it's hard to beat the location on Tamarindo beach. Perfect water temperature and a gradual, sandy beach is ideal for any level of surfer. Thanks for making our experience in Tamarindo a very memorable one - I hope to be back very soon!CJYatesy

This is a life experience you don’t want to miss. Elias’s passion for surfing , life and spirit will make you want to come back every day! We were beginners and he made us feel so comfortable and confident in the ocean. We were both up on the first lesson. Everyone else in the water were watching and listening to where we were going to catch the waves - Elias is the best around! We loved it so much we have cancelled our flights on to our next destination and coming back for a week more of lessons! Ok forget what you know about surfing or watched on YouTube. Just FORGETABBOUDIT! The SALT guys (Elias and Manuel) will give you a never-before-seen experience. First, they will ask you what your goals are for the lesson. They will spend time listening to you, and answer any questions you may have (there are no dumb questions). Then, they will teach you from the ground up. They will give you a "ground school" lesson on the sand, using sticks, sand, and asking you to practice certain movements. Then in the water, they will work with you - on 1 thing at a time only, until you master it. By the end of 2 lessons I went from being a crappy surfer to going down the wave face, turning to my stronger side, seeing the "line", and going right down it, like Pro surfers do. For $25 more a photographer will take photos - but she will do this from the beach, she has a very strong telephoto lens to make high-quality pictures. Here is what makes SALT unique. They have certain techniques and moves they teach you that is very different from the garden-variety surf school, which only has you do a few pop-ups, that's it. I do not want to reveal their secrets, but rest be assured these moves, and the analogies they give - to think about while you do them - could probably be patented. They work better than any other techniques I have been shown, ever. SALT also gives incredible customer service. Some minor things went off-kilter at my first lesson, but they took full responsibility and went 100% out of their way to fix it - I was blown away. I should also say my main thing is SUP surfing not "prone" surfing, but they explained how it is really 90% the same moves, explained what is different also, and they got me excited to do regular surfing too. I would day if you are considering Costa Rica to learn surfing, make your destination city Tamarindo, and book several lessons from SALT. And Tamarindo is itself fantastic for shopping, restaurants, beach parties, and nightlife -if you have spouse who does not want to join your lesson, they will have plenty to do. But then aqain.. bring your spouse! And kids!Journey449292

I’m a 62-year-old beginner and definitely not a “natural”. Elias and the SALT team have showed the utmost patience and belief in me during my learning journey. They taught techniques that worked well for someone who lacks upper body strength, yet has the desire. What I found most beneficial was the feedback. Every wave I surfed, I received specific feedback on where I had proper form and where my technique hindered my progress. As a result of the feedback, I continued to improve and be motivated.
