Youness was our tour guide for 3 nights from Fez to Mazouga to Marrakech and could not recommend him enough. Friendly and went out of his way to show us amazing stops, meals and teach us about Morocco. Would recommend to anyone, with us also having an amazing night at Sahara Desert camp.

A friend and I worked with Morocco Tours Agency (MTA) to plan fairly last minute change of plans trip to Morocco. This agency was recommended by a friend who had used them for a 2 week trip to Morocco earlier this year. Said (MTA owner) was great to deal with and answered all emails and questions promptly. He helped us construct an itinerary (below) from Tangier (as we we would be arriving by ferry) to Marrakech for 5 days, 4 nights. With the nights in Fes, a luxury camp outside of Merzouga (the Sahara Desert), Dades Valley and Ait Benhaddou. We chose the luxury option for the accommodations. Day 1: Tangier » Chefchaouen » Fez [309 Km] (started 8:30 am arrived in Fes around 8pm) Day 2: Fez » Ifrane » Cedar Forest » Ziz Valley » Camel ride and night in the Merzouga Desert [460 km] (left 7:30 am - arrived at camp close to 9pm after ride) Day 3: Merzouga »Todra Gorges » Dades Valley [255 km] (left later, 9:30 or so, arrived around 7:30pm) Day 4: Dades Valley » Kalaat M'Gouna (Roses Valley) » Skoura » Ouarzazate/Ait Ben Haddou [210 km] (left at 8 am arrived 7pm with time spend mainly in Ait Ben Haddou and at the Hammam) Day 5: Ouarzazate/Ait Ben Haddou » High Atlas Mountains » Marrakech [195 km] Left at 7:30 - dropped at airport at 2:00 pm with an hour or so in the Marakesh Medina. Note bring motion sickness meds for this part of the trip if you get car sik at all! SO curvy! Overall, we we enjoyed the trip and felt fortunately to have worked with both MTA and our guide/driver, Hassan Azeroual. Hassan was an awesome driver/guide and kept us laughing and upbeat for the long hours in the car. He made the trip memorable to say the least. Hassan picked us up promptly from our accommodation in Tangier, and we were on our way to Chefchouan (the Blue city). A city set up for Instagram but beautiful to wander (note the MTA guide cannot come with you here). So you need to hire a separate local guide or can wander on your own. Once on our way we realized quite quickly that our trip while not a standard itinerary offered by Morocco Tours Agency followed a standard "tourist script" used by most agencies tour groups throughout Morocco. While there may be ways to break it up differently, if you are going to see all of the places mentioned IT WILL involve lots and lots of driving and time in the car. Therefore, if you only have a few days, you will see a lot but not really experience much. The major sites and cities are pretty spaced out. However, the scenery and topography changes do make the journey more interesting. Additionally, there seemed to be certain programmed stops, for food, coffee, bathrooms, viewpoints etc. that many, if not all, agencies/guides/tours and tour buses use. Therefore, the agency/company chosen is probably going to differentiate most by accommodations offered and additional excursions they are able to accommodate based on your time you have in Morocco. Also, I would recommend to ask where the driver can/can't accompany you (as certain places sites they are not allowed to come in.) Our highlights of the trip were the dromedary (not camels) ride through the dunes of the Sahara at sunset, a hike through the slot sandstone canyons in the Dades Valley, Toda Gorges walk, Van Coffee Stops, ATVs in the dunes, a public hammam experience which was eye-opening. Other than having to spend most of the days in the car (Note, Said did give us the total KM approximations for each day but we still were not expecting the total car time), I think the food was the biggest disappointment. Most of the tourist friendly stops along the route offer very bland pre-set tourist 3 course menus that prioritize quantity over quality/taste, especially if you need to accommodate a vegetarian. Our guide had some ideas for other places but we were generally stuck with the tourist option as they had vegetarian meal. Further, often times we would have been happy enough with just a starter, but were almost always served (and required to pay for 3 full courses). While the amounts of money were definitely not that pricey, it was more just about preferring to pay for a smaller amount of good food rather than a mountain of blah food. Hassan did allow us to do some research and talked with the people at the accommodations and the food did improve as the trip went on but we still felt that we didn't have fabulous Moroccan food experience. I would also be sure to note that Morocco is by and large cash only economy, and you need lots of smaller 5DHM and 10DHM coins and 20 DHM bills for tipping/getting water, etc. We had limited cash on us for traveling and felt that we were somewhat limited by that and finding places to change the larger bills provided by the exchanges for the cash we had. MTA may want to consider having their guides have some coins/smaller bills available to exchange with people. Here are the accommodations we stayed at and some thoughts on each. Fes - Riad Sara Beautiful Oasis in a chaotic area of Fes. The rooms are very large and well appointed. Overall happy with this place, although dinner (cous cous was bland and didn't have much flavor). Would recommend staying here but heading elsewhere for dinner. Merzouga -Sahara Desert (Palmyra Luxury Camp) Small newer facility with lovely people, and ok food (although too much of it). Tents were gorgeous, and well spaced out so no noise carried from tent to tent. However, because of its size may not get the dancing drum circle that may more naturally come about depending on your mix of guests. ALSO - note this place is much farther out from the rest of the camps which means you have a decent travel time from the end of the dromedary (camel) ride to the camp, where others take the camels almost into their camps. Depending on what you are looking for, this could be a great option (accommodations are stellar) Dades Valley - Hotel Riad Bahammou This was our least favorite of the accommodations and I would not consider it a luxury accomodation. It is VERY far our of the town which adds even more drive time, Accommodations are in need of updating and certain rooms have awful plumbing smells (we needed to change rooms). However, had some of the most surprising and tasty food of the trip for dinner (but still way too much). Ait Benhaddou - Riad Lamane Very basic accommodations (would not consider this a luxury place) but preferable to the Dades Valley accommodations as the people were more authentic and real and made an effort to provide us a dinner that was more "Moroccan" (made tagines for us) vs the food provided to the rest of the guests. They have a beautiful pool that if you have some time to enjoy it looked lovely. Watched a beautiful sunrise from here!We took a 3 day tour from Fes to Marrakesh with our man Omar. He was a wonderful guide and provided us with the best experience we could have asked for. I highly recommend this trip, its a great value and a lifetime experience!

I had an unforgetful and fantastic journey from Fez to Marrakech! I can say that it was the most wonderful time we had in Morocco. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the journey across the Atlas mountains, not to mention the magnificent Sahara desert. We are lucky to have Omar, who is very humorous and he is really helpful with all our questions and requests, as our tour guide. He's even given us the Berber's name and we kind of like it and uses it during the tour. We took the luxury package and the 2 nights that we spent in Palmyra Luxury Camp and Dar Rihana Dades are superb and very comfortable. Highly recommended!
