Tony and Mainor were our guides for one of our favorite Costa Rica adventures. We did the 2-in-1 river safari and La Fortuna waterfall with our 6 and 2-year-old children. They were patient and warm, incredibly knowledgeable and overall fun people to spend a day with. I had some nerves going into this with the two little ones, but Tony made it easy and let us move at our own pace (which is often dictated by toddler legs and potty schedules). And the meals! The snack between the two was fabulous, but the meal we had at the end of our adventure really was one of our favorite parts of our whole trip. The food was fresh and delicious, the location was so beautiful and the women who prepared our meal were simply lovely. We couldn't possibly recommend the whole experience enough -- it was a highlight for sure!We had an amazing time doing the Safari Float Penas Blancas River tour and Michael (tour guide) was great. We had an amazing time doing the Safari Float Penas Blancas River tour and Michael (tour guide) was great. He educated us on different species of animals. He was strong and paddled the entire time without asking us to help. Our kids, 6 and 8, really enjoyed the river. They got to see monkeys, vultures, iguanas, turtles, otters and other animals. Afterwards, we went with Carlos (tour guide) and Edgar (driver) to La Fortuna waterfall. We hiked about 500 steps to the base of the waterfall. We went swimming and the water was refreshing, but cold. The hike back to the top was tremendous. We felt out of shaped. For lunch, Carlos and Edgar took us to this restaurant where we had delicious Costa Rican food. Overall, Carlos and Edgar spoke good English. Carlos has great eyes and spotted sloths on the road. He stopped and used his microscope to let us see the sloths on the tree. He even let us see the Volcano Arenal steaming at the top with his microscope. We recommend using Rain Forest Explorers for your tour. Our Guide Carlos Bonilla and driver Edgar were excellent hosts and facilitated a truly remarkable day for our family. Our Guide Carlos Bonilla and driver Edgar were excellent hosts and facilitated a truly remarkable day for our family. Both are very knowledgeable and good at their job! Both spoke English well and were patient with our Spanish : - ) I would recommend this to families, couples, or any nature lover. The walk down and back to the falls can be strenuous if you have bad knees or hip but if you don't want to walk the 1/2 mile down and back you can see the falls on top and is almost as nice as trekking down to the base. Carlos and Edgar will make for a fantastic day and give you an appreciation for the CR culture, authentic food, people, rainforest, and efforts to preserve nature. Will do it again - next time!! Pura Vida - miss it already!Michael took us down the river and seriously, this man knows his stuff. He was funny and entertaining and the float was very educational. Michael took us down the river and seriously, this man knows his stuff. He was funny and entertaining and the float was very educational. He spoke about the species and the environment and impacts on the environment. He mimicked howler monkeys to get them to move towards us and he answered all our questions. We loved this float. I could skip the waterfall part afterwards as it has a bit of a theme-park feel to it but of course it's beautiful (albeit very crowded!)The raft safari starts after a short drive from the hotel, unfortunately ours started with a bang as our raft exploded when they tried to pump it up and we had to wait for another raft to be brought out to the start point. The raft safari starts after a short drive from the hotel, unfortunately ours started with a bang as our raft exploded when they tried to pump it up and we had to wait for another raft to be brought out to the start point. The guide was a nice friendly lad who obviously enjoyed his work. A lovely relaxing float down the river with lots of birds, reptiles and a few mammals to spot amongst the trees and rocks. We "saw" a furry anteater up in a tree (you wouldn't know it with the naked eye) which the guide said was only the second one he'd seen in 15 years guiding. Even the short rainfall didn't distract from the relaxation. After the safari finished, we had a snack and then on to the famous waterfall (back towards town). The entrance is imposing and you are warned about the 500 odd steps you need to walk down to get to the base, you even have to sign a health disclaimer! Just inside the entrance there is a viewing platform where you can see the water emerge from the jungle cliff on the opposite side and drop down into the pool you are about to walk down to. What goes down must come up so after making your way all the way down to the lower viewing area (where we were advised against going in the pool due to the sharp rocks) you realise what a waste of time that decent was and also realise you've now got to walk all the way back up. I wasn't going to be put off so braved the sharp rocks (he wasn't kidding) to slip into the very chilly water of the pool for a few moments before setting off back up the steps. It's a lot of steps!! In reflection, unless you can't live without a bit of water spray on your skin, or love walking barefoot over jagged, slippery rocks why would anyone bother to climb all the way down and even weirder, back up again to see a waterfall from ground level when there is a perfectly adequate view from the top? I'd do the river safari everyday of the week but not the waterfall, if it was the Victoria or Angel falls, maybe, but this isn't even a small wow let alone amazing. With Edgar as our driver and Carlos as our guide, we had an absolutely exceptional day with Rainforest Explorers. With Edgar as our driver and Carlos as our guide, we had an absolutely exceptional day with Rainforest Explorers. As previous reviewers have noted, Carlos has an eagle eye, and I’ve included some of the animals he spotted from what seemed like an impossible distance and then showed us with his high-powered telescope. (All photos were taken with my phone through the telescope.) Both shared their great knowledge about Costa Rican wildlife and culture. We had a delicious lunch and snack (lunch prepared by Edgar’s wife and daughter at Rainforest Explorers’ own restaurant) and by the end of the day, felt like part of the family. Thank you Rainforest Explorers!
