The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was more than I expected. I thought we would be behind fences like we have been at many other sanctuaries we have been to. But to get the opportunity to walk with the rhino in their sanctuary was an experience I will never forget! Their sheer size alone was incredible. To watch the dynamics between them was interesting. I would highly recommend visiting this sanctuary if you have any desire to see, learn about, support, and witness conservation in such an outstanding way. We were told that once they have 50 rhino, they will begin releasing some back into Murchinson Falls National Park. What a wonderful conservation effort that so far has proven to be successful! We also enjoyed the food they had at the little restaurant on site. The food was very good, too. In all, we spent just over an hour here. We felt like we had plenty of time to explore the area, learn about the rhino, enjoy our meal, and get back on the road to get to our next destination. It proved to be a well worth it stop on our way to Murchinson Falls!

I was in Uganda and had been recommended to stop in for a visit to the Rhino sanctuary. As it's only a couple of hours drive north of Kampala it also makes a really good break point between parks further north. The acomodation was basic but clean and functional. The main advantage of staying over night is you get to see the Rhinos later in the day/evening or early morning and you can only go out to see the shoebills at dawn. Would I want to stay here more that one night, probably not. Although the rangers were amazing and knowledgeable for both my Rhino trek and my shoebill trek. The food on site is very limited, expensive and not great for vegetarians. Take a good camera, definitely take binoculars if you want to see birds and make sure you find out when the rhinos come in for dinner and breakfast. Ask the guides because I didn't get told, had an early dinner and missed them.

This rhino sanctuary is incredible with over 20 years conserving and protecting rhino population donated from various locations including Orlando Zoo. We saw eldest rhino with a new baby nursing with mom, as well as 9 rhinos gathered with females, alpha male and babies. The lodging is basic although the experience is phenomenal, worth it!

WOW … we stayed for 1 night and had the most amazing experience .. although the room was basic with no working hot water I would go back there in a heart beat ..( they appear to be building some luxury cottages on site so might try them next time ) the rhino tracking was amazing and although I rarely listen to the safety briefing I am pleased we did as the information was required numerous times .. but after the tracking we had dinner in the restaurant and the rhinos walked beside u ( we were close enough to touch them ) an absolutely amazing experience and worth every Penny .. thankyou

We didn't really know what to expect on the tour of this sanctuary. We were given a background safety presentation and then told how the sanctuary started from nothing to now over 41 rhinos the most recent only four days old. We drove to the area of one family and hiked for a short distance and saw a mother rhino, her baby about 6 months and another baby she had adopted who is about a year old. We watched them interacting from a distance of about 25 yards and were able to take excellent photos. We walked further and saw eight more rhinos resting under a tree. We never dreamed we would see eleven rhinos. Our guide Jackson was excellent. We felt safe with him, and he answered all of our questions.

This was a great experience. I am always nervous to visit these so called wildlife ranches / sanctuaries because they are normally about exploiting animals. I believe this place is an exception. You will track the rhinos on foot and will be able to get quite close to them, but not close enough to disturb them. Each of them has an armed guard with shoot to kill permission 24/7. A sad world we live in. You will have a limited time to observe the rhinos and then time to ask questions from the ranger. There is a nice restaurant on site with vegetarian options. If you are vegan, you will have a bit of explaining to do, but the staff is friendly and chef came to talk to us. Our food was delicious.

This was my second visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (first was in 2020) - what an amazing place! Just the fact that they're saving the endangered white rhino from extinction is enough reason to visit and support this sanctuary. This is the only place in Uganda to see rhinos, so the chance to get "up close and personal" in a wild setting is quite unusual. This visit was part of a safari through the Kampala-based African Pearl Company. Our guide was an enthusiastic young ranger named Jeremiah who was bound and determined to show us as many rhinos as possible. Our experience was enhanced by donning rubber boots and trekking through the brush and mud of the sanctuary to find different rhino families. There are over thirty rhinos in the 27-square mile sanctuary, some in family groups, some single individuals; we saw 16 of them. All are watched around the clock by armed guards. Poaching for rhino horn is a big problem, and has caused all rhino species to be listed as endangered. Ziwa is trying to preserve these White rhinos with the hope of eventually releasing them into the wild one day or, at least, forming another sanctuary. The sanctuary is also home to other species of hoofed stock including Uganda kob, bushbucks, and warthogs. I mentioned to Jeremiah that I had been to Ziwa before and even found a picture of my 2020 guide on my phone. Jeremiah identified him as a good friend, Caleb, and actually took me to meet him since he was out guarding one of the rhinos - such fun!! Jeremiah is also a birding guide. We went out to the Lugogo Swamp with him early the next morning where he spotted 4 elusive shoebill storks for us as well as many other beautiful birds. The storks were a distance away but we could see them clearly through binoculars - very rewarding experience. Don't miss a chance to visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary!

I visited the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in October 2022. It was one of the stops on our way to Murchison Falls. It's a relatively long drive from Entebbe, not because it is a long way, but because of the traffic in Kampala, so be prepared to spend a lot of time in a car in a probably very hot weather. The sanctuary itself is very nice and interesting - and of course the work they do is amazing. We did the walk to find the rhinos and our guide was very knowledgeable and told us a lot of interesting rhino-related facts. We also got relatively close to the animals once we found than and it was nice to stay and just watch them for a while. The walk is not super long but the weather and muddy areas definitely makes it harder than you would expect. This is of course a nature open space so be prepared for natural life, mosquitoes long grass and a lot of sun. The sanctuary offers some wellies as there are a lot of muddy areas when walking - highly recommend that one accepts the offer. Also take a hat and water while walking and don't wear shorts.

This is the only place in Uganda where you can view the endangered southern white rhino in the wild. Sadly, they were declared extinct after poachers killed them off in Murchison Falls National Park in the early 1980s. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, established in 2005, began with 6 rhinos, and the count is now at 33. Their goal is to eventually reintroduce the southern white to their natural Ugandan habitats. Silver, our friendly, knowledgeable ranger, led us on a walk through the bush that took us within meters of several groups of rhinos. We were provided with boots (necessary as we trekked through wet areas) but overall, we found it to be an easy walk. What a unique experience! The sanctuary is located on the road between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park. Do not miss!

We mostly prefer to see animals in their natural habitats, and we have seen a rhino in the far distance, and here we go so close and it was amazing. You are guaranteed to see them and they are not in cages but walking around as they please on the sanctuarys big grounds. They started with 0 rhinos and now they are up to 36! With more rhinos on the way. We were told that when they reach 50, they plan to release them to the park. They do an amazing work, and equipped in rubber boots you are driven quite close to the rhinos, then you walk a few minutes - and there they are! We saw some in the distance and 5 quite close. We were lucky enough to see them move around and then head for the shade to take a nap :-)

This place is sooooo cool! You actually trek with a guide to spot white rhinos – and you get real close. What an awesome experience! You’ll learn about the animal and the conservation efforts – so very educational! Thank you to our guide, Samuel – he was so informative and we had the ultimate experience observing the beautiful animals because of his knowledge and guidance.

We had a great time at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Very friendly staff, nice atmosphere and a small, but good restaurant. You always feel very close to the rhinos as they are passing the camp every day! We got to see a lot of rhinos and one of the highlights was (at night, 4 a.m.) when a group on 4 being just approx.. 5 meters away from our window at the guesthouse Obama. You can not get this experience elsewhere (even not in the exclusive lodge some miles away)! And it was fantastic to trek the rhinos with a guide. We were able to watch some groups of rhinos about 60-70 meters distance. Truly amazing! Our guide Simon was great: knowledgeable and also fun – just perfect. We would recommend this experience to anyone. You can also do bird-watching with a guide including a short boat trip in a beautiful landscape. Highly recommended place in Uganda!

After a quick greeting, background to the centre and orientation we were driven to a different part of the sanctuary and then took off on foot to find some of the White Rhino. We quite quickly encountered one mother Rhino and her calf who were very relaxed. We then moved on and then found a group of another six Rhino. There was again another mother with her calf but then also a third mother who had one calf of her own and two adopted calves! It was amazing to see so many Rhino's altogether and then two of the calves started having a mock fight which was so fun. The guide was amazing and told us so much information about the Rhino's. The grounds of the sanctuary are lovely in and of themselves. There's other wildlife including lots of Bushbuck but we also saw a Forest Duiker which was cool. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in wildlife - and possibly even if you're not interested in wildlife at all!

We had a wonderful time at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. We got to see 8 rhinos and the highlight was a group on 5 grazing together. Our guide, Simon Peter was first class, knowledgeable and also fun. We had a great time learning and would recommend this to anyone. Its not a long visit, but go early in the day.

Super cool, up close experience with the Rhinos. We felt extremely safe with the staff direction. The conservation going on here is extremely cool, including the rapid reproduction of the rhinos. As Americans it was super cool to know that one of the male Rhinos came from Magic Kingdom and was donated to Uganda by Disney. We walked very up close and personal with these animals, were provided a great safety briefing and thoroughly enjoyed! Recommend a visit as Uganda is preparing to re introduce these animals back to certain parks in the country.

This sanctuary has to be visited since it is the only place where we can see white rhinos in Ouganda. Moreover it is possible to go very close from them, by foot

They're doing a honourable job needing rhino's to eventually reintroduce back into the Ugandan wilderness where rhino's existed till the early 80's. One can go looking for them on foot and they're not perturbed by people as there are armed guards with them 24/7. Amazing creatures that need to be saved
