We had an amazing time on the “Between Cartago Volcanoes” tour! Our tour guide Rigo was so knowledgeable— he took the time to point out many unique plants and ecological features, particularly birds and insects after we shared that our group was interested in those areas. This day trip was a great way to see the country side and the volcanos, and the archeological site was a bonus for our group and very interesting. I also loved the small tour size; there were three of us in my group and we had our own private tour! We really enjoyed our time and would book with this group again!

I had the best tour with Rigo today. Very personalized the company focuses on smaller tours and I was lucky enough to be the only one. Rigo was very knowledgeable and personable and made sure I saw some of the best views the area had to offer. As well as learn about the local fauna and fungi. I am going to recommend to anyone i know coming to Costa Rica to take this tour.

Our trip was perfectly tailored to our desires and abilities by a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. The sites were beautiful and interesting, and were not covered by our previous 12 day trip. Pura vida!

This tour definitely lived up to its description and the 5-star reviews from others. Rigo was a fantastic guide and the small group made the experience very enjoyable. Not only is Rigo a biologist who is passionate about his subject, but we were lucky to share it with a young couple who were also biologists. All were willing to share their knowledge and passion for birds and nature with us. It was a beautiful thing to watch and learn. The hike to the summit of Iruzu was a nice break from the drive and the scenery of the surrounding countryside was breathtaking. Afterwards, we drove through the agricultural countryside around Turrialba, also stunning. We stopped for a Costa Rican lunch at one of the many Sodas and the food was great. Our trip to Guayabo was cut a little short due to rain but the site was well worth the visit. Rigo was very knowledgeable about the site, that shows a remarkable level of sophistication from the people who lived there 2000 years ago. Roads and aqueducts that are still intact today. We highly recommend Rigo and Oropopo Experience.

Rigo really knows how volcanos work and took every effort to make sure we had the best views. He really knows the back roads so it really helps getting around. We had a great time. Thanks.

Oropopo tours are the absolute best! We took the tour called ‘Between the Cartago volcanoes’. This trip is a maximum of four people, this is a huge benefit as it is easy to get the attention of the guide, and the trip can be tailored to the interests of the group. Our guide, Rijo, was absolutely superb. He even contacted me by WhatsApp the day before our tour to remind the pick up time and the essentials to bring on the trip. He picked us up from our hotel at the agreed time and transported us to the first volcano in a very comfortable 4x4 vehicle. He entertained us throughout our journey to the Irazu volcano, with explanations of all around us and what we would be seeing on our trip. We were lucky that the weather was bright enough in the morning for us to see the Irazu volcano very well, though it turned cloudy later, so harder to see Turrialba volcano, and less visibility as we travelled towards it. The walk up to the Irazu volcano was delightful with humming birds, other birds, pretty flowers and insects along the route, the sunshine made it extra special. Afterwards we drove through beautiful agricultural countryside. We had an enjoyable lunch and then drove on to Guayabo archaeological site. To reach the site from the car park, we walked through forest, seeing different plants, leaf cutter ants, other insects and interesting birds. Our guide was helping us to spot everything along the way, and explaining the ecology of the environment to us. At the site we learned about the early people of Costa Rica, as well as seeing a sloth, a monkey and many more birds. I would recommend that it was beneficial for us to have already visited the National Museum beforehand, to help with understanding of the early people who lived at this site in ancient times. Throughout the whole trip our guide kept us entertained and taught us all about all of the animals and plants that we encountered, and made sure that each of us had a chance to see all of them. Rijo also frequently set up the scope that he brought with him to give us better views of everything. This trip was easily the best trip that I have ever taken, anywhere, and I would highly recommend it. I would also highly recommend another tour from the same company, Wild San José, a walking tour of the University to see birds, butterflies, sloths, and again learn about how the environment, plants and animals of the natural world work together.

Really great day - I had already had 2 tours with this company so knew I was in for a good day. We were a group of 3 solo travellers with Rigo as our guide, all communication in advance was perfect and pick up right on time in a comfortable jeep type car. We went up to Irazu where we were lucky to see incredible views above the clouds, and hummingbirds in the area - we took a little walk and were lucky to see a coyote run right across the road in front of us! Rigo was really informative in explaining the volcano, about the old shelter and helped us fully understand everything we were seeing, with lots of time to walk around, ask questions and enjoy the views. The drive to see the view of the next volcano was incredibly scenic, with beautiful views of the mountains and farms. You pick what you want for lunch from the menu, it’s really delicious. Then you head to the archaeological site, it’s so amazing to see history from indigenous times so long ago and working aqueducts - there is also lots of wildlife and we had the clearest sloth sighting, thanks to Rigo’s sharp eyes and a telescope. At no point were we ever surrounded by hoards of tourists either, it was always just us which was so much more personal than packed tourist areas. We all had a really good day, and comfortably back at the hotel by dinner. A wonderful trip!

I actually took two tours...this one was a private tour (with Rigo as my guide) and the Nature Tour, which was a small group tour, with Diwo guiding our group. Both tours were great! With the help of Carlos, planning and booking the tours (long distance from Texas) was easy, and flawless. You can trust these young men 100% to do what they say, and to do it right! The tours were informative, enjoyable, and time well spent. I highly recommend Oropopo Experience! I will try to attach some photos including a picture of a Toucan that Rigo spotted at Guayabo.. Also, these young men make the extra effort to help you any way they can. As an example...not only did Diwo call an Uber for me after the tour, he waited with me and made sure the Uber driver knew where I needed to go...thanks Diwo, Rigo, and Carlos for providing me the best of Costa Rica hospitality!

Outstanding small tour with an exceptional guide (Rigo). Volcano vistas magnificent and the Guayabo site is much more interesting than it’s website would lead you to believe. Highly recommend!

What a pleasure this tour guided by Rigo was! He is an excellent tour guide and due to his background in biology was able to answer all of my questions. We left in the morning for the Irazu volcano. Unfortunately, the craters weren’t visible due to fog and clouds. Nevertheless, I’ve gotten a great introduction to the volcano and how it affects local plants and animals. The next part of the trip was to the foot of the volcano turrialba. The drive through the rainforest was very impressive. We stopped several times to take pictures. Guayabo was a very interesting experience. It was nice to learn all about the ancient ruins that can be found there. Also, the rainforest and wildlife was very impressive: we saw capuchin monkeys, toucans and leafeater ants.

My nephew and I had a short stay in Costa Rica, so we wanted to see some nature on this tour. Rigo was our guide for the day and picked us up promptly at 630am for the trip to the volcanoes. It turned out to be a wonderful experience, as we were the only passengers, therefore able to ask a million questions. Rigo is so knowledgeable about nature, plants, animals and geography because it's his area of study at university. We spent the day at the volcanoes, traveling to the summit of Irazu and around other areas of lava flow and farmland. We can certainly recommend this tour, especially if Rigo is your tour guide!

This tour was an amazing experience . The beauty of the natural setting combined with the knowledge and expertise of the our tour guide, Rigo made for an unforgettable adventure! We enjoyed the Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes and to our surprise the archaeological site of Guayabo. The weather was nice and clear. I would recommend Oropopo Tour Experience for your next visit to Costa Rica. The are not only masters at making the tour work smoothly and efficiently but also they are biologists which for us was an added value to our experience. Lots of learning. Very good value for the money, in my opinion one of the best tours I’ve taken. Thanks, Rigo

We had reserved the tour in advance and got the tour guide of Rigo. He was on time for the expedition. Rigo was a wonderful tour guide and not only informed us about the wonderful landscapes we experienced but told us facts and took us to several of the common areas in costa rica as we were trying to get the feel of the typical places local visited. Rigo was able to give us the experience we were looking for and also informed us of several of the naturalistic areas such as the animals sceneries and more! He also brought us strawberries to share and was so amazing overall I could not ask for a better day at Costa Rica ❤️ Definitely worth every penny and would do it again.

If you’re looking for an authentic costa rican experience, away from cheesy tourist attractions, that’s a tour for you. Rigo has a broad knowledge of the area, is friendly and you can tell he loves his job. You will get to see Cartago province through the eyes of a local. Loved the sites, views, the whole vibe of Oropopo. Also - during that tour I’ve eaten the best lunch so far in Costa Rica. Can’t recommend enough.

This is an awesome way to see some of the countryside and view the craters of the volcanoes. My guides name was difficult to pronounce so he shortened it sadly I cannot spell it so I am not gonna try. We had a great day just talking and learning about the countryside! I knew very little about volcanoes but now I have a better understanding. Lunch was a great view overlooking the mountains. Guayabo was a good final stop. Too bad more wasn't known about these people. Archaeology is not funded much so that is why. All in all a great tour with some beautiful scenery and insight to their culture.

Although expensive, the tour was money well spent. I had a great time and was in awe of the sites we visited! We got very lucky and the weather was gorgeous, providing great views of the volcanos!! Just wish I had brought some shorts to change into after the volcanos as it got very hot. My guide was friendly and informative, especially about local birds.

Amazing guide, who I ended up sharing the day with alone, as I was the only booked for the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and it was a pleasure spending this experience with him, as he was sharing a lot of knowledge and in general a really nice guy. Be prepared for a lot of hours driving around in a car (and not much hiking, eg on the volcanic trails, which I had expected). We were a bit unlucky with the weather conditions, and couldn’t see Turrialba, a bit disappointing but the overall experience of the tour was great. Thanks Ricco!

What a great & safe way to visit the must see volcanoes in Costa Rica. Especially during Covid we were happy to have our own personal guide/driver and not have to share the car with other passengers. Our guide Jose was super knowledgeable and made sure we were well informed. He was completely flexible with any of our requests. It was very interesting to drive through neighborhoods and experienced the various forest types from dwarf to cloud. Besides the volcanoes we also walked through a coffee plantation and stopped at the Basilica of our Lady of the Angels. It was completely worth it.

What a wonderful way to see volcanoes from San Jose! Especially during Covid we felt very comfortable in our own private car & tour guide for this excursion. Jose was a fantastic guide with lots of information about everything we were looking at! Besides volcanoes we also stopped at a coffee plantation and the Basilica de Neustra Senora de Los Angeles. The drive was super scenic going through various climates from dwarf to cloud forests. You will have plenty of photo opportunities. Just ask when you see one! It’s worth the extra cost.
