There are no tigers here like in Apocalypse Now, but plenty that can kill you. Tracy showed us two scorpions and a very poisonous spider. Gian showed us an opossum eating in the canopy with a night scope. All in all, lots of fun and very informative.

This tour will be one of the highlights of your visit to the Osa Peninsula. I was hesitant to walk in the jungle at night. Don't be! It is an enthralling experience, in large part due to Tracie's expertise, passion, and gentle presence. She and her husband, Gianfranco, deftly locate even the shyest creatures and share their prodigious knowledge of this secrete world. The glow of the scorpion, a snake so still it looks like a branch to an unsuspecting lizard, spiders as big as your hand, frogs, crabs, lizards, are a few of the hidden treasures. Wear insect repellent.

After reading so many positive reviews I had high expectations for this tour and it certainly did not disappoint. We saw so many interesting insects, arachnids & amphibians, and also 8 different species of nocturnal mammals. Gianfranco and Tracie are a treasure trove of information on the flora & fauna of Costa Rica and I would like to thank them for their patience in helping me to capture photos on the evening. I’d 100% recommend this tour to others. Thanks guys!

One of the main reasons we came to Costa Rica was for this tour. My 11-year-old son is a huge insect fan, and he wanted to see with his own eyes some of the cool insects he has learned about in documentaries and online. This tour was amazing, and it was the highlight of our whole trip. We saw so many cool animals, including bioluminescent click beetles, a trapdoor spider, whip scorpion, parasitoid wasp pupa, a sloth, my son's beloved leaf cutter ants and (dun dun DUN!) a velvet worm! Boy did we luck out. Velvet worms are rare. Tracie did an amazing job of remembering everyone's name on the tour and interacting with everyone in the group. Her passion shows through, and after the tour, her husband then creates and sends you a webpage with what you saw on your tour that includes links with lots of further reading and videos to watch to see the kinds animals we saw in action--such as a velvet worm excreting strings of gluey substance to catch prey. We can enjoy the trip and refer back to what we saw as often as we like.

Our tour with Tracie and Gian was absolutely incredible! I thought I had a reasonable knowledge of the world beneath my feet but they opened our eyes to so much - not least the millions of spiders laid out right before our eyes and visible with a £10 head torch! We (and particularly my wife) were in two minds about booking the tour, and a bit freaked when the time came around. We had visions of staggering about in the jungle stumbling into spiders webs and wiping cobwebs off our faces. in actual fact the tour did not stray far from civilisations, and was almost entirely on paved surfaces or well trodden footpaths. No fear necessary, but be prepared to wowed! The 'trap door' spider was a highlight, and a glimpse of a kinkajou.

We loved our tour with Tracie and John, whose passion and expertise make for an exciting and fascinating night tour. Nature will vary all the time but we were lucky enough to see Opossums, bats, spiders, a sloth and a host of other nocturnal creatures. The depth of knowledge was excellent and gave us insights into behaviors in a really engaging way

Absolutely the highlight of our trip (and it was a spectacular trip)--we were fascinated by Tracie's depth of knowledge and ability to seek out the smallest and most obscure wildlife including a trapdoor spider and a teeny scorpion. Her husband also contributed massively by finding a sloth, possum, and anteater. So worthwhile, but must book in advance because the tour always sells out.

Nothing to add to what everyone else has said. The Bug Lady tour is an essential component of a trip to Drake Bay - that's it!

Tracie and Gian guided us through the wild life of Drake Bay at night. Their knowledge, passion and generosity made this tour the most memorable we ever had. We could have continued the whole night listening to them and watch the wonderful creatures living in the forest, insects, reptiles and mammals. We bought the Pocket guide to mammals of Costa Rica written by Gian to extend the learning experience. The book is full of exciting and clear information and illustrations are beautiful. Thank you again so much for sharing your passion and knowledge. As awareness of the impact we have on distant ecosystems is increasing, learning about their beauty can only lead us to take better care of our precious planet. Arnaud and Tessa

We had so much fun, we saw snakes, spiders (and learned how to spot spiders in the darkness) and scorpions! Highly recommended.

Wow what a great night tour, both Tracie and Gian were so knowledgeable and amazing at finding and teaching us all about the amazing wildlife and insects. I loved the trap door spiders! Would highly recommend and to top it all we were sent all the photos and information via email after the trip so could take our time to absorb all the amazing things we learnt.

You really don’t have to go very far to see so many creatures!! Thinking of nearby people who had no idea that this was right on their doorstep.. from trapdoor spiders to an anteater and tapir, both two and three toed sloths, a tarantula and a sleeping hummingbird, what really brought this tour to life was the extraordinary knowledge and incredible stories about all the creatures we encountered. Awestruck and wouldn’t have missed it for the world.. you two do a fantastic job! Astrid

Not to be missed! After reading about the Night Tour with Tracie we actually built our 10 day Costa Rica trip around gaining two spots on the walk. It was a fantastic and spontaneous tour, revealing secrets about the night time world of animals big and small (we saw mammals too- a tapir and a sloth, but this we were told was unusual). She is an excellent guide with a deep understanding of the natural world on the Osa Peninsula. You will not be disappointed..

I went in the night tour with Tracie and Gian two experienced and enthusiastic biologists ( Tracie) and naturist (Gian). The tour got off to a great start with the spotting of a tapir, this was followed in quick succession by the viewing of a whole range of animals (sloths) and insects , many of which I had never heard of before for example the trap door spider and a beetle with two fluorescent eyes and a red tail when it took off! Gian showed us snakes and Tracie pointed out and held a Scorpion. What really made the tour though was enthusiasm, knowledge, professionalism and care of these two amazing guides. A must do if you are in Drake Bay. Thank you Tracie and Gian

I honestly had no idea all the critters busy at night. We found and learned about all kinds of insects. We also saw a tapir, a kinkajou, bats, and my favorite - a sleeping snake. The guides answered all my questions - I babbled non-stop. I must have seemed like a 6 year old. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.

This is a fantastic tour, highly recommend! Tracie and Gian are extremely knowledgeable about these creatures (Gian has literally just published a book on some of them), and the time flew by. They do a great job of tag-teaming, with one of them talking to the group, while the other locates the next creature(s) to discuss. And you can circle back with them afterwards and get an online list of the creatures and insects and animals you saw, so you can relive the experience once again. Sign up early, as I hear these tours book up quickly!

What a brilliant tour. Learnt some amazing facts and especially found how some creatures may hold fantastic medical benefits interesting. These 2 people, Tracie and Gian are really enthusiastic and passionate about what they do. Loved it but not a tour to take little kids on because some of the facts may be a little scary for them. Loved it.

We loved this tour. Tracie is so knowledgeable, and has such a kind spirit. We treasured every exciting and educational moment spent with her and Gianfranco. If you are planning on a visit to Drake Bay do not miss the chance to spend an evening with The Bug Lady.
