Absolutely fantastic place, whether or not you are a The Third Man fanatic. Incredible history of Vienna before, during and after WW2. But truly amazing collection of artifacts from the movie: it's script, stars, location, production - everything. The most amazing thing is that this is a labor of love - not a commercial enterprise - created by an astonishing couple who are passionate about the film, The Third Man, and the incredible moment in history that it captures. Besides having collected and creating the phenomenal exhibits, the couple - Gerhard and Karin - are the most lovely people. When you come to the museum you will undoubtably meet them and instantly strike up a rapport. To my astonishment, they ended up giving me a gift: a film poster that they took right off their wall!! I will certainly visit them - and the museum - again and again.

Great museum. Totally surprised by this museum. Visited with my wife and adult son last Saturday and we all loved it. We got to meet the couple who built the museum who were passionate about The Third Man and it’s connection with Vienna. We are museum buffs and have visited museums all over Europe and although small compared to the bigger museums it packs so much memorabilia into the three buildings it is just as enjoyable. Great layout and story telling about the movie. Although not required I’d recommend watching The Third Man before going. I hadn’t watched it in 15 years and was able to rent it online. It really is a great film and this museum does a great job of showcasing it!

I loved everything about this amazing little museum! If you are a fan of The Third Man movie this is a MUST. The amount of items that Gerhard and his wife have curated from the movie is astonishing! Posters, scripts, pictures, letters, memos, etc. They have the actual zither used for the soundtrack! They have set up several vignettes to re-enact certain scenes. Gerhard gave us a private tour and it was just fabulous. Not only is he an expert on every detail of the movie but he is also quite the historian. The museum is also an education on post-war Vienna that we found fascinating. I really cannot say enough about this special museum that is clearly a labor of love for Gerhard and his wife. I am so happy we were able to have this experience and encourage anyone visiting Vienna to go to The Third Man Museum!!

We decided on a private walking tour and visit to this wonderful museum. Gerhard is passionate about “post war Vienna”, he is a wonderful historian and his private museum is full of the most amazing original letters, photos, uniforms, photography & film. Our age group was 19 to 60 and we all enjoyed. If you can watch the movie or read the book “The Third Man” it will make the tour even more interesting. We have loved Vienna and this was a great end to our week in this beautiful city. We would recommend this especially if you enjoy something out of the ordinary.

We arranged for a tour of the Third Man Museum as well as a private full day walking tour of Vienna with Gerhard during our free day there, and had a wonderful time that we'll never forget! The depth and breadth of Gerhard's Third Man movie paraphernalia, as well as his knowledge of the intrigues of postwar Vienna, are truly amazing. Gerhard is friendly, honest and engaging. However he is not afraid to discuss the treatment of Jews during that time, and part of the museum's exhibits deals with that sad topic in a sensitive but clear way. During our private walking tour Gerhard took us to see the newly renovated Judenplatz Museum, the Hapsburgs' Imperial Crypt, and many other off-the-beaten track sights. Of course we stopped for strudel and coffee at an authentic Viennese coffee house as well. If you plan to be in Vienna we highly recommend visiting the Third Man Museum and perhaps taking a walking tour of Vienna with Gerhard. A unique and rewarding experience.

Gerhard is passionate about what he believes in. I could tell he put so much into this museum and his enthusiasm shows. Could not help but support his cause.

Great fun. Guide was full bilingual (I guessed Australian- no Austrian!) Excellent n atmospheric section on the film and excellent section on most post war Vienna, some wartime Vienna. Clip from the film was hard to hear (poor audio) but again atmospheric old timey feel. I’ve seen n appreciated the movie. I give the museum 5 stars. My wife doesn’t recall seeing the movie but still gives museum 4 stars.

The museum captures the excellence of a film that I originally saw as a child and have enjoyed many times over 70 years. The rooms cleverly surrounds the visitor with the Vienna associated with the film. We visited as part of a particularly special birthday holiday in Vienna. Very recommended.

What a special and interesting experience. Not only about the movie, which I recommend to see before (but it's not required), but about Vienna in the 20th Century, from before WW2 to some decades later. True documental evidence and memorabilia about those years, and knowledge I found unique and memorable. I have been to many museums in Vienna, and seeing The Third Man Museum, in hindsight, made a more indelible memory, because more than a run of the mill museum for my collection of tourist visits in all the great cities, this feels like a labor of love and becomes so unique, and memorable. It is not large in extension but it is all very condensed, so be prepared to take your time, move slowly, and taste all the different nuances that you are being shown... while this lasts, because I don't know how they can make it sustainable with this price...

If you’re even a passive fan of The Third Man, or just interested in Vienna’s postwar history, you definitely need to make a trip to The Third Man museum. We kicked off our first evening in Vienna with a screening (via Amazon) of The Third Man. (We’d both seen it before but wanted a refresher.) This museum is absolutely fantastic, and the energy and enthusiasm of its founders Gerhard Strassgschwandtner and Karin Höfler is great. The museum is filled—and I mean filled—with memorabilia from the movie from around the world, such as posters and other items, but it also delves deeply into the careers and personalities surrounding the movie—from Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Trevor Howard to Alida Valli, Bernard Lee, and others. One of the best aspects of this museum, however, is its connection to postwar Vienna, and the story it tells about the times and trials of people living in the chaos just after World War II. Divided into three parts, the third part of the museum explores the many struggles so many went through in postwar Vienna trying to put their lives back together after the war. Give yourself a couple of hours to take it all in, although you could fill the whole afternoon viewing everything. Also a good idea to have seen the movie—not required, but recommended. (We’ve seen a couple of ridiculous reviews from people who aren’t familiar with the movie and somehow give it a lower than excellent rating because they don’t know anything about it.) We also appreciated the fact that it’s a very reasonably priced museum and operates completely on its own, without any government/state support. Please note that it's only open Saturdays from 2-6!!!! It’s definitely a labor of love for Karin and Gerhard, and it’s worth paying a visit to on your next trip to Vienna!

What an extraordinary museum! I meant to spend an hour or two and spent almost three! I love the film and just got thoroughly immersed in this museum, which is as much a labor of love as it is the behind-the-scenes exploration of Carol Reed's extraordinary masterpiece. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to learn so much about post-World War II Vienna and Austria that form the background of "The Third Man." I have a crappy DVD burned off a bad 6mm print. My visit to this excellent, highly recommended museum has led me to ask for the Criterion restoration for Christmas!

This is a great museum. I recommend you see the movie before you come to the museum. It has two parts one about the movie and the other about the history of Vienna during and after WWII. Even if you know nothing about the movie, the historical aspects of Vienna during and just after WWII are well worth the price of admission. The museum is only open one or two days of the week and for limited hours but it is worth planning a visit.

While planning my trip to Vienna and checking out the classical music entertainment which is a must do while in Vienna, I found, as others cited, this museum gem. While not that familiar with the film, I was so excited when i found that there was a special zither concert in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the premier of the Third Man film on Sept. 7, 2019! I immediately emailed Gerhard who put me on the list for a ticket and encouraged me to arrive before the concert to tour the museum. Unfortunately an earlier tour was longer because of having to reschedule the day due to an illness of one of the guides. However, I did have a little time while the room was being set up. It was a wonderful concert that I am so glad to have been able to attend! And the theme while it continued in my brain for a few days was not to be missed! I was so surprised about the number of recordings by various artists there were - who knew? I was not that familiar with the film so purchased a copy to view before traveling. I also had not been familiar with post-WWII worn Vienna. Everyone at the museum was so courteous and helpful. They called a cab for me after the concert also. This museum is not to be missed and is quite a contrast to other museums and classic music venues. But an excellent contrast. When in Vienna again more time will definitely be planned for this museum.

A spectacular exhibit, not just of The Third Man film, but post-war Vienna. Thousands of pictures, posters, movie clips, and original documents from WW II. An experience that you will not find elsewhere.

This museum is only open on Saturday afternoons as it is run by a husband & wife - buy their catalogue if you want to see how it took over their lives (well, the Saturday afternoons anyway). We spent a few days in Vienna and happily our travel timing allowed us to visit this museum for a couple of hours. Even if you know something about the film you will surely learn a lot about how it was made, in the challenging context of post-war Vienna. Fascinating insights about Graham Green, Carol Reed et al, and how they brought the actual experience of life in Vienna of those days into the film. And Anton Karas' zither music...! Also, lots on the history of Vienna. Can you get a DVD of the film, with extra commentary and analysis elsewhere? Buy it here and support this unique heritage.

If you are an Orson Welles fan like me then you can't go to Vienna without checking out the Third Man Museum. Of all the Third Man stuff I did in Vienna, this was the best. The owners of the museum have done a beautiful job that is obviously a labor of love. I'm not going to spoil any of the surprises with this review. Suffice to say they have every piece of memorabilia associated with this film you will ever want to see, and the Cold War content is superb. I picked up a little Third Man theme music box in the gift shop and I love to annoy people with it.

This museum was nothing short of incredible. Am a huge fan of Graham Greene as well as the movie "The Third Man" AND the television show with Michael Rennie of the same name. First of all, the people who run the museum have obviously invested a great deal of resources as well as their time and energy and love of the subject matter. Throughly enjoyed the visit. Seeing a short film clip from the movie with the then-current projector was a joy. Another aspect of the museum is a magnificent portrayal of Vienna in pre, WW II, and post WWII. Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures, explanations, and many displayed newspapers, magazine articles, and other documents. If you are in Vienna on a Saturday, you really must visit this museum, which is an incredibly short walk from the Karlsplatz Metro (subway) station. Wow. I can hear the zither playing now. When I get home, I'll see The Third Man again with a much, much renewed appreciation of it. WOW.

This private collection is gorgeous and awesome. The service is very friendly and helpful. The museum is based of three parts. Two parts are focused at the film, his actors and the story. The third part shows different aspects of the after war Vienna. The museum is privat owned. We recommend a visit. It's a must in Vienna.

This museum is open on selected days and times only so my wife and I were lucky to be in Vienna when we could go on the english-speaking tour. It was on a Thursday at 2pm – you are warned to be punctual. The museum at first seemed to be one room crammed floor to ceiling with original memorabilia, but in fact there are several buildings involved all just as full of amazing stuff - original cameras and other equipment, posters, videos of people with connections, huge poster and photos, etc. Only 7 of us were there and we were kept enthralled by Gerhard who owns the museum. He was full of fascinating facts and stories about the Third Man movie and all its aspects, as well as giving us a history of Austria and Vienna before during and after WW2. We saw a short clip of the movie on an original projector. At an hour and 15 min the tour is just the right length but to see it all properly we will be going back another time. Highly recommended!

A brilliant, comprehensive collection of memorabilia devoted to a great film - but that's not all. The pre- and post-war Vienna section is fascinating even to those (like my husband) who aren't fans of the film but who are interested in the historical context. A hidden gem in a city full of gems.
