We did not get to complete our tour in Cartagena. We went to the meeting point, and there was no one there. I even communicated with Viator the day before and no response. I have disputed this charge.

Our guide, Carmelo, was not qualified to lead this tour about Roman antiquities in Cartagena. He would stop at many buildings and structures unrelated to the cities Roman era and expound on them at length. The two important Roman excavation sites are the theatre and baths. He only thought his job was to let us look at them from the outside; erroneously contending over objections that inside entry was not included in our tour. We weren’t scheduled for a restroom stop until the presentation on Roman food and drink 2 hours into the tour. He attempted an unscheduled restroom stop at a small museum at a small Roman excavation site but a loud kerfuffle ensued with the guard when we headed to the restroom. We were forbidden to use the restrooms. When we finally made it to Maria’s Roman food and drink we had a very interesting presentation on Roman dining lifestyle. We also found out that our tour was to include Roman theatre entry and were offered the opportunity to backtrack and tour the theatre museum and excavation. We never determine if entry to the Roman baths was supposed to be part of our tour. All in all one of the worst tours I’ve experienced in 50 years of foreign travel.

This tour was the highlight of our brief cruise ship stopover in Cartagena. Before touring the Roman ruins, our guide, Juan, gave us a concise overview of Cartagena’s history that set the stage for what we were about to see. The ruins are as interesting as any we’ve seen elsewhere. Our guide conducted the tour at a good pace-neither too fast, nor too slow. He was easy to understand. And he patiently answered our questions and gave us enough time to take all the pictures we wanted. This was a good tour and worth the money.

Our guide was knowledgeable for what we could hear. If you weren't within 5 people of him you couldn't hear. Also competing with Spanish translator which was very distracting. We signed up for an English excursion. Guide shot off like a rocket and walked way too fast not knowing if everyone was following. Guide really had no awareness of the group and it's physical capabilities. Guide needs to get better at projecting and making sure entire group can hear him...even if he needs to repeat it. Example was on the bridge type thing in the Roman Theater. He explained to the people that could fit onto the bridge and then walked off. The rest of us didn't get anything there. He also needs some type of pole with identification along with Viator stickers. There were non excursion people that were tagging along.

The tour sights were interesting and a valuable expeience. The wine and tapas were enjoyable. Our guise announced at the start of the tour, this was the 1st time he was giving the tour in English. Definately a minus.

Roman theatre was awesome. Amazing to learn that it was only discovered a short while ago! Imagine what else is buried under the city!

Our tour guide was very hard to understand. It was a small group which was great but not a very interesting tour. The tapas we had at the end were interesting…the sangria was amazing. We broke off from the group and made our way back to the ship. The Roman ruins were ok… I personally would have liked to see more of the “little Pompeii” ruins. Our tour guide spent a lot of time repeating herself…she did struggle for translating sometimes.

Such a wonderful surprise to see this ancient Roman Theatre. Built before Christ, then layered over by centuries of building on top, markets, church, homes. The remains were discovered in 1988 when they were building another structure. Archaeological excavations and restoration efforts were completed in 2003 and the museum opened in 2008. A well done museum and explanations for English language speakers.

We booked a private tour that was cancelled so we booked this small group tour in English. The tour guide’s English was very bad so we couldn’t understand her and the tour was billed as a walking tour of the Roman ruins and heritage. We spent the first 45 minutes of a three hour tour less than 50 feet from the ship talking about the dock! We finally had to speak up and get her moving. We saw the Roman amphitheater and then had a drink and one tapas; very poor itinerary.

We usually book our tours privately as we tend to get a smaller group and a better tour. This was not the case this time around. Our ship arrived early in Cartagena and with a mid morning tour and the city being so close to the port ,we decided to walk around and explore on our own until the start of the tour We hate when people are late for a tour (making everyone else wait for them) and make it a habit to be early. We arrived early for our tour but as we arrived were told the tour time had changed and we were late. I never received any correspondence telling me the tour time had changed. In addition, I believe they had to combine two tours due to a lack of a tour guide. So due to this, the group was larger than expected. Our guide was Melo, a nice gentleman but he quickly lost command of the group. It was difficult to hear him, despite being near the front. We were most interested in the Roman ruins (hence the tour we picked: Roman exploration in Cartagena). We did skip the line in the front and entered the back gate where the ruins were. In doing so, we did not see any of the museum or exhibits. We stayed in the ruins for about 10 minutes taking pictures and then he gathered us up to exit. I observed other groups standing or sitting listening to the narrative that their tour guide was giving, ours did not. Very disappointing. We continued to explore the city, but honestly most people were just on their own walking and talking amongst themselves. At one point we were near the unexcavated ruins area that was clearly of interest but he was talking non stop about murals that were painted on apartment buildings that were going to be destroyed. He was engaging with some other locals in Portuguese for quite a while when finally a man from our group went over to him to say that WE were paying for a tour and not these other people. He had lost all control and interest of the group at this point. We were then told we were going to tapas (which was not part of the tour that I booked.) After a short time, we were told we were going to an additional restaurant. This is when myself and several other people decided to leave the tour and continue on our own. This may have been an off day with the combining of two tours but it was a disappointing tour none the less having only a few hours in Cartagena.

Our guide Bruno was exceptional. He is well-versed in the history of Cartegena. He is very engaging with a good sense of humor. He made the tour seamless. Definitely 5 star !!

Absolutely fantastic Roman ruins in the heart of Cartagena. You are lead through the museum first (about 5 euros for a ticket) which shows you the history of roman settlement right up to modern day Christianity until you are up into the ruins of the amphitheatre, which is worth the trip itself. You can go right up to the top and see the spectacular views of the city and hills surrounding the town. Not too huge so good for kids to enjoy as well.

Nice walking tour of Cartagena with history, site visits, and tapas. Came off a cruise ship and it was perfect for us.

The explanation of how the ruins were discovered in 1990 were amazing. How the painted tiles were put together to recreate the past. The 7000 seater amphitheater under the Sanra Maria church was stupendous.

We had 43 people in our group. That is RIDICULOUS! Hard to hear. Hard to understand. The guide was nice but he overtalked EVERYTHING. Frankly I think he was overwhelmed with the size of the group. We had to wait over 40 minutes to get in the arena because the tickets were ready. Just had to stand in the hot sun.... again just ridiculous. It's like a 1 hour tour that was boringly stretched into a 3 hour tour.

We took this tour to see the Roman Theater. The description clearly stated entrance and admission was included as well as to two other sites. Once going by the theater and other sites, the guide said the tour didn't include any admissions. We could only view from outside. The guide was pleasant, but spent a lot of time on minutiae vs giving us an overview. By the end of the tour, most of the group had gone their own way. Very disappointed with the Tour. Our first bad experience with a Viator tour.
