Located north of Palm Springs, about a 15 minute drive from downtown, is the famous windfarms as seen in many movies, commercials and music videos. And this tour of one section lets you get up close to see these gigantic structures. I took the self-guided tour, which requires you to download an app to your smartphone (it’s free), which narrates the various points on the tour. Gives a good history of wind power in California, and the trials and tribulations that were faced in implementing this technology. Interesting. And yes, it is very windy there, so be prepared.

We were a family of 2 seniors, 3 adults and 2 kids (10 and 11). We had just done Joshua Tree the day before (with an audio guide app) so I think we had high hopes for this - plus the reviews were really awesome! For most of us, the most interesting part was the "orientation" in the Welcome Center watching the movie and learning about wind, and other green energy, not just in CA but all around the world. The guy answering questions was super knowledgeable and we all found him very enjoyable. The actual tour was a bit dry. This tour an audio tour from their app, not a guided one. It was interesting to see the Blade Yard and how many iterations the windmills had to go through to get to the huge ones we have today. It was (obviously) super windy so I was the only one brave enough to get out and snap a few photos. I think if this tour had been something like $20/car I would have thought it was worthy of a stop if you've got time on your trip. However we paid $85 for the 7 of us making it one of the more expensive activities on our vacation.

Nice concise video intro before the tour then Tom took us in a golf cart. Had a step for anyone with mobility issues and gave a leisurely informative stop and go tour. Classy and knowledgeable and personable.

We really enjoyed the informative video before the driving tour. Our questions were answered by the attendant afterwards. The driving tour was through the wind field with up close view of the component parts of the windmills with App explanations. We felt we got our money’s worth.

Our guide, Tom, was excellent. Answered all the quirky questions. Having known absolutely nothing going in, it is a great short educational opportunity!

We have driven by these gigantic structures for years. Read about them in the news. Exciting to learn more about them, their evolution & see them up close. Great information for an a novice to understand.

Great way to spend a morning in Palm Springs before our departing flight. Informative pre-tour video, easy to follow tour with excellent app describing different features of the tour, and great opportunity for stunning and unique photos near the giant wind turbines. Exceeded expectations and highly recommend this tour, even in rainy weather! Scott Joy

We found ourselves with a few hours before our flight and no place to be so took the time to do a self driving tour. Bought the groupon and it was well worth it. Learned alot.

It was great to learn and experience the windmills up close. Enjoyed the information prior to the tour and then the ability to get out and enjoy the history and timeline of the windmills and how that came to be. I did not realize it was 40 years since the first windmills were installed.

An excellent and informative tour. We did the self guided tour in our own vehicle. The tour starts with a walk through the app, and explains the route. We watched a very good 13 minute video before setting out on the tour. Well worth the time and money. Takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.

This is a neat different kind of tour just north of Palm Springs. When driving through areas with huge wind turbins, did you ever wonder how they work, or what they look like up close? This is your chance to find out. They offer two tours, an audio app-guided driving tour, or a private golf-cart tour. To be honest, the audio tour was perfect and cheaper than the golf-cart tour. You can see some of the huge blades up close, as well as some earlier models that were originally used as the wind in this valley was harnessed for electricity production. Leslie was just great in getting us set up with the app and there is an informative video that kicks off the tour.

Myself and a friend took the VIP tour. Our guide was Tom. We really enjoyed the tour. Tom was friendly, engaging and informative. It was interesting to find out how this industry and technology has developed over the years. Tom had a lot of insights into a wide array of subjects. If you are a local history buff or an engineering/technology geek I think you'll find the tour worth your while. Tom was more than willing to spend as much time as was needed to answer all of our questions. He gave us a lot of background on the mechanical and engineering aspects of wind turbines and the advances that have been made over the last 40+ years. As part of the VIP package I received a copy of "Backstories of the Palm Springs Windmills." Our tour was scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. Not wanting to be late we arrived more than an hour early to the "Visitor's Center," which is a trailer. We were able to sit in on a video that gave a history of the wind turbines in the Palm Springs area. The video started at 11:00 a.m. and was being viewed by a group of people who had an 11:00 a.m. tour. After the video was over we met Tom and spoke with him in his office for awhile and looked at a bunch of framed photographs, some of them very old, that showed the progression of windmill design over the years. There were also a handful of pictures of the structures that had accidentally suffered mechanical failures that left them collapsed on the ground. We then started our tour of the grounds a little earlier than our 12:00 p.m. scheduled start time. Tom was fine with that. I also wanted to thank Annette, who was my contact at Palm Springs Windmill Tours, who booked our tour. She was very gracious.

We really enjoyed our self driving tour! However, the best part was Richard who worked at the check in building. He gave us so much information. He was so kind, knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us and answered lots of questions. We learned a lot! We did watch the 13 minute video before we took our tour. All very interesting.

Found out about the Palm Springs Windmill Tours totally by accident!. That being said we were so glad that we took this tour. We have been to Palm Springs many many times and we’ve always seen the windmills and now we know how they work how big they are close-up, and how much energy they produce. Our guide, Tom, was friendly, personable, courteous, and most of all quite knowledgeable! Our tour was with one other couple in a golf cart, and Tom drove us around the property, showing us all the various windmills from wayback when to the current ones going now. Anybody contemplating this tour…go for it! We recommend the guided tour. The self driving tour is probably fine, but having a tour guide along that can answer your questions is a definite plus. All in all this tour gets four thumbs up… Two from me and two from my husband!

I really like the educational video that you get to watch and I really like the people working there the only only complaint is it’s kind of expensive for what it is. Definitely would do it again if I got a better deal maybe a Groupon.

We loved this tour. The docent was very knowledgeable and really nice. He happily (and easily) answered our barrage of questions. After driving by the wind farm on the 10 a million times it was fascinating to see the wind turbines up close - they are so much bigger than they seem from the freeway. We took the golf cart guided tour and it was well worth the time and cost. Learned a lot and have a much better appreciation for wind power.
