An absolute highlight of our trip to Khao Lak! The brilliant Wandee made sure to tailor this amazing food tour to our tastes and provided us with the opportunity to taste regional delights, such as dry wild pig/boar curry and fermented fish sausage. Wandee was a wonderful guide, who shared her deep knowledge of Thai cuisine, as well as her experiences cooking and travelling the world. Visiting Takua Pa and exploring the Old Town food market, whilst appreciating the street art and distinctive Sino-Portuguese architecture was another wonderful experience. The iced mix tea and coffee at Kopi Kuapa was one of the most delicious coffees I’ve ever enjoyed! We really cannot recommend Wandee and this brilliant food tour more highly - thank you, Wandee!

Although I have been to Thailand for the 5th time…this day was full of new experiences and surprises. Our guide Woandee was lovely and showed us local places we would have never found on our own. In addition she was full of interesting information and she never stressed about the time, so we could do everything in our own pace. We could try all different things to eat from salty to spicy to sweets and we loved it. In the end we visited a very charming coffee bar with a loungy atmosphere and great coffee and tea variations. A little stroll through the old town of Takua Pa finished off this great afternoon/evening. I would highly recommend this tour.

This food tour was a real highlight of our holiday in Thailand. Waandee was an excellent guide - so knowledgeable, warm, and full of interesting stories. We got to try so many delicious foods and ended with coffee and desert in a gorgeous restaurant in the old town.

Wandee is a rock star, super professional and the right amount of friendly. Her and driver Kim made us feel very well taken care of and amongst friends. We enjoyed the tour immensely. I highly recommend this one. Very unique old city and landscapes that I can’t imagine not seeing. Was a key part to a more comprehensive understanding of my surroundings.

Wow! You won't be hungry after taking this tour! Wandee is such a great guide who knows all the right local food spots to take you to. Wandee had a chat to us about what style of Thai foods we both enjoyed and then took us to all of her favourite places, including a famous Pad Thai and a Michelin-recommended restaurant. Our tour finished with a trip to Takua Pa Old Town and a local coffee shop there for afternoon tea/coffee. It was quite an incredible town that looked like something straight out of a movie set. We were too full to make it to the last stop which was dessert (roti), which was a shame, but we'll save it for next time. I recommend maybe only having breakfast on the day of this tour as you will need to pack your appetite! Wandee and her driver picked us up from our hotel and dropped us back afterwards. All we had to do was sit back, relax and eat!

As well as being beautiful and beguiling, Wandee is an excellent chef and teacher. We were a family group and she was sensitive to our need for non spicy Thai food ( a contradiction in terms some might say) The setting is basic and rustic but perfectly appropriate for the style of food. We greatly enjoyed the fruits of our labour.

We had a great time on our tour with Wandee. Enjoyed learning about the food and culture from a local. We went on a Sunday and the market was quiet but Wandee adjusted the tour to suit us to include a drive around the local farms as well.

We had a great time visiting the market with Wandi, Wandi was able to explain the origin and ingredients of many unique and traditional southern Thai foods. The kids were tempted out of their comfort zones and we all had a great time.

We did the local food tasting at Takua Pa with Wandi and had a wonderful time. Wandi tailors your experience to your preference and doesn't disappoint! We tried food we definitely wouldn't have tried alone and was very grateful we did. Wandi also has amazing knowledge of Thailand and Thai food to impart, this is an essential for anyone visiting the Khao Lak area looking to experience authentic Thai food.

If you do any organised tour when visiting in Khao Lak, make it this one. Our guide, Wandee is a very knowledgeable local chef and teacher and really knows her way around the small local restaurants and kitchens. There is no way otherwise that we would have known that these places even existed. We visited a few establishments but the highlight was to have the experience of sitting in a small Takua Pa Old Town eatery while Mama created genuine and simply delicious local delicacies for us with Papa looked after their little niece... a simply magical taste of local life and culture... then off to finish the evening with cocktails at a very funky hidden local bar and restaurant. This tour was very special and highly recommended for anybody wanting to avoid the tourists and see the real Thailand.

We had an amazing evening with Wandee on the food tasting tour. I wish we had more than one stomach! Everything was absolutely delicious, and Wandee was an awesome guide with heaps of information about the food, Thailand, and in general was awesome company. We had our three year old daughter with us and she adjusted the trip to suit our needs and ensured she advised when things might be too spicy. After dinner we enjoyed a walk across the iron bridge to digest some of our food, we watched the fireflies and a far away lightning storm from the bridge - it was a great way to end the evening. I highly recommend this tour, it's a great way to see a slice of local life, as well as get the inside track on the best dishes the region has to offer. Wandee is the perfect hostess. Wandee haalde ons om 15u30 op aan het hotel, met haar eigen auto. Onderweg leerden we elkaar wat kennen. Ze is journaliste, heeft een passie voor koken en eten, reisde de wereld rond, en runt nu een plaatselijke B&B en kookschool. Daarnaast begeleidt ze ook foodtastings, waar ze duidelijk veel research voor heeft gedaan. Het enthousiasme waarmee ze praat over eten en drinken doen je het water in de mond lopen. Ze toetste ook af wat onze smaken waren: of we houden van pikant of liever niet, of we krab lusten, wat we al kenden van de Thaise keuken... De rit duurde ongeveer 45 minuten. We kwamen aan in een We stopten bij een restaurant met een Michelin-vermelding, en kregen een drankje. In het restaurant was alles in het Thais aangeduid, gericht op locals, geen westerse toeristen hier. Geen probleem: Wandee bestelde een aantal gerechten voor ons. Eerst kwamen er superverse prawns met noedels en look. Het smaakvolle pikante sausje werd apart geserveerd, zodat we zelf konden bepalen hoe spicy we het gerecht wilden maken. Dan kregen we een bord met allerlei ingrediënten die we zelf naar keuze konden combineren: rijst met garnalenpasta, omeletreepjes, ananas, thaise mango, snijboon, rode ui en varkensreepjes in een sausje. Allemaal apart lijkt dat niet zo heel speciaal, samen gemengd smaakte het echt heel lekker. Het derde gerecht was een topper: een groot bord krab met ui in gele curry. Het heerlijke delicate krabvlees smelt zo weg op je tong! Er kwam ook nog een stuk gefrituurde vis met een zeer smaakvolle zoet-pikante tamarindesaus met koriander. Een feestmaal! Wandee vertelde ons tijdens het eten meer over de ingrediënten en de typische keuken in het zuiden van Thailand. Ze zei dat we niet alles moesten opeten, dat we kwamen om te proeven, maar het was zo lekker, zonde om te laten liggen. Na het restaurant reden we 5 minuutjes verder tot aan een lokale markt. Daar hebben we onze ogen uitgekeken: bijzondere ingrediënten, in schitterende kleuren, heerlijke geuren... Wandee gaf ons veel uitleg over alles wat er te zien en te kopen was, en aan quasi elk kraampje stelde ze voor om te proeven. We hadden net heerlijk veel gegeten, dus eerst weigerden we, maar af en toe nam onze nieuwsgierigheid de bovenhand en konden we niet weerstaan. De marktkramers begrepen geen Engels, dus Wandee bestelde voor ons. Ze betaalde ook alles, en zei dat dit inbegrepen was in de prijs. We proefden een soort van gefrituurde kokoskoekjes, een beetje plakkerig maar niet te zoet, met duidelijk de beet van kokosnoot, heel lekker. Verder aten we ook kwarteleitjes met sojasaus (heel eenvoudig maar zeer smaakvol, gaan we zeker zelf ook eens proberen) en een soort van “poffertjes”. De gestoomde pompoentaart kon er niet meer bij, Wandee kocht ons een stuk om mee te nemen - heel fijn. We passeerden vele kraampjes met allemaal lekkers en ook vreemde dingen, klaargemaakt en rauw... een hele ontdekking voor ons. Daarna reden we nog een stukje verder, naar een plek met ook wat kraampjes en restaurantjes. Daar aten we overheerlijke mango met sticky rice. Ik had dit al eerder gegeten, maar nog nooit zo lekker! De dame sneed de verse mango’s waar we bij stonden, vingervlug en behendig. Een schouwspel op zich. Het kraampje ernaast maakt me nieuwsgierig, er werden pakketjes in bananenblad gestoomd. Wandee bestelde me meteen een portie, en hoewel ik dacht dat ik niet meer zou kunnen eten, heb ik het helemaal leeggegeten: een soort van rode viscurry, fris en pikant tegelijkertijd, een echte smaakbom! Tot slot nam Wandee ons mee naar een restaurantje waar ze een speciale ice tea serveerden, waarbij ze de thee vermengd met gecondenseerde melk met een speciale techniek opgoten. Een beetje zoals ze in Arabische landen doen - Wandee vertelde ons dat het inderdaad moslims waren, die in het zuiden wat meer vertegenwoordigd zijn dan in de rest van Thailand. Op de achtergrond speelde een Thaise soap op een mega-tv-scherm - ook eens leuk om te zien. We kregen ook nog een dessert geserveerd dat typisch zou zijn voor de streek: een hele dunne, krokante pannenkoek die wordt opgerold tot een soort van kegel, over een kaars wordt geplaatst en dan overgoten met gecondenseerde melk en cacaopoeder, die van de “vulkaan” afdropen. Een leuke afsluiter, het lukte ons helaas niet meer om het helemaal op te eten. Intussen was de avond gevallen en was het tijd om terug naar ons hotel te gaan. Het was een heel fijne ervaring om dit te kunnen doen met Wandee, we hebben genoten van haar uitleg en ook heerlijk en meer dan voldoende gegeten en gedronken. Absolute aanrader!
