We spent two days with Edwin from Haku Tours. The first day we saw the “nicer’ sides of Lima and the second day was the Pyramids and Shanty Town tour. The Shanty town tour was eye opening! Edwin first took us to the market in the Shanty Town and then onto a one room school in the area, run by volunteer mothers. The children performed a Xmas song for us and we performed one for them. The soup kitchen was right next door and we all made some purchases at a little grocery store for additional supplies for the kitchen. Edwin was so informative about life in a Shanty Town and appreciative of our support. Highly recommend this tour!!!!

Whatever the world gives you, there is still hope. Soup kitchens to electricity, to walls replacing dumps, the madam president does it all.

This was one of the most educational tours I have ever taken. It shined a light onto a side of the Peruvian life that not many people are aware of. It provided insight and meaning and was the best way I could have ended my trip. The tour guide and members of the community were friendly, giving, and interested in sharing their stories and learning about mine. Highly recommended.

Our tour started in Shanty Town at the fruit and vegetable vendors purchasing healthy treats for the children that we would later meet. The vendors at the fruit/vegetable stands were delightful and happy to see us. Our guide and translator educated us about the fruits and vegetables native to the area, many of which were unfamiliar to us. As we progressed further in Shanty Town, we encountered many children and some parents, all of whom were treated to share the bounty from the food vendors. We were treated to a wonderful interaction with some of the people of Lima, thank you to Haku Tours for providing the opportunity.

I loved everything about this tour! It was truly a great and eye opening experience with a lot of cultural and historical facts, we were able to taste a wide variety of local food and had the opportunity to discuss with many locals. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn about and discover the real Lima!

Aura was an excellent guide for our tour in the Shanty Town, which is the real side of Lima. Very different from Miraflores / Barranco. You got to see the community projects, invited to see their homes, talk to local. Lovely to know that your visit will support the community projects. The visit to local wet market is also super cool.

This tour left me feeling like I actually learned something real about how people really live in lima. You dont see tourists in this neighborhood. Felt 100% safe. People in the street all knew our guide as a friend. They were so full of life and kindness. Got a feel for Quechua culture in the streets and in the home of a local. A quetchua doctor fixed me a drink to heal my sore throat. It worked too. We met a truly inspired community leader who, with nothing but her own courage and ingenuity, is figuring out effective ways to feel and educate people. These women have courage and brains. I left her $20 to help her cause, and she seemed really grateful, although it felt like a pitance. My guide was knowledgeable and fun. Don't miss this if you want a real experience in lima.

I'm very grateful I was able to see Shanty Town with Cesar. He's an amazing tour guide and you'll have a great time with him. People I met on this tour were sweet, kind and very welcoming. We very much enjoyed our Shantytown tour. It was very interesting to see and hear about this part of Lima and the projects that are actively trying to improve the lives of the people in this area. There are some outstanding people working to accomplish this goal. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Lima.

What an extraordinary experience with Haiku Tours to both Shantytown and then on the Kings and Queens tour through Lima. Saw Chamging of the Guard too. Our guides were so knowledgeable and professional with comfortable vehicles each day.

Edwin is an awesome guide. His knowledge of life in the shanty town is amazing! He took us through the market and let us try some fruits and bread which were delicious. Then we took a walk in the shanty town stopping along the way so he could give us information on life in the area. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Amazing Experience! Our tour guides (2 gentlemen-sorry can't remember their names) were excellent and very informative. You could tell they cared about the people. The locals were welcoming and friendly. It really was impactful. I like how they took us to the market to buy healthy foods and little toys for the community children (we arrived on christmas eve). If I do this tour again, I would definitely bring more things for the children and school. This is a must see tour plus it supports the local community.

This tour couldn't be more immersive, educational and thought provoking. This humbling experience, gets to the heart of humanity. As you enter into one of the 5 Shanty Towns in Lima (population approx. 2 million) and meet the people who call this area their home, you experience the true sense of what community is all about. We were greeted by friendly community residents and leaders, more than willing to invite visitors into their homes, or to share the important projects that that are taking place in their area. This an opportunity not to be missed. We were lucky enough to have Edwin be our personal guide. We wish we had more time in Lima to further explore local life experiences by Haku Tours!

This tours provides an informative and very educational look into shanty town daily life featuring the people, their homes, markets, and animals. Featured on our tour was a market, any number of homes, a community soup kitchen, a community garden, a school/library, and (by chance) a metalsmith's studio. The tenacity, creativeness and ingenuity of the Peruvian people living there was astounding. Their warmth and compassion for the others in their community was made readily apparent. Mabel (our tour leader) was exceptional as our guide and interpreter. She set the tone early and gave us insight into any number of relevant topics in this world few foreigners will have a chance to experience. Our driver (sorry terrible with names) was a master of Lima's street and it's interesting drivers. Most importantly, he delivered us from location to location safely. I most highly recommend this tour, the Haku company and Mabel as your guide. Your eyes will be opened. Guaranteed you will appreciate your life all much more.
