Joe was fantastic. I enjoyed the classes and got to drink different types of makgeolli. Joe taught us that making makgeolli does not require fancy equipments. I got see take home my own bottle of makgeolli! He also sells makgeolli and soju brewed by him. His sweet potato makgeolli is very addictive and taste awesome. His bar/store would be my first stop to stock up on makgeolli when I visit Seoul again.

My husband and I really enjoyed this class which felt like half learning/doing, and half (practically) unlimited drinks. Joe was so nice and the day before, we asked to move our date and he was flexible and responded so quickly. We found this place in this cute alleyway with a bunch of other shops, it's very cozy and warm inviting atmosphere. We sat down and had tons of different makgeolli as he went through the history and how to make it. There was only the 4 of us in this session so it felt personalized. It's super convenient that he has youtube videos and sends instructions afterwards. We all went back with our own huge jar (FYI you need to burp it every day, otherwise it bursts open). Being back in San Francisco, we're inspired to make some of our own! If we ever go back to Seoul, we'd totally go back for a drink. Thank you, Joe!

Informative class with a chance to get hands on in making it. There were plenty of samples to try. Love the atmosphere of the class and Joe did an excellent job of sharing his methods. You get to take home your creation for you to try later.

We had an awesome time at Baekusaeng Makgeolli this mid-January 2024. Both o us had experience making makgeolli and signed up for what amounted to a two-day session. On day 1, we focused on making makgeolli. The lesson included makgeolli history, brewing process, tasting, and hands on experience. We made a seasonal, fruited (pineapple) makgeolli. We took the makgeolli home in plastic containers to observe and filter after a 7-14ish day period. Having just filtered (and drank) our wonju, I can say that we were extremely pleased at the process and results. We learned a lot and plan to apply it to our future makgeolli brewing. On day 2, we focused on multi-step makgeollis as well as making nuruk from scratch. Neither of us had made nuruk before and were excited at the opportunity. The class was information oriented with hands on application. We left the class with our own blocks of nuruk to tend throughout a 7/7/7 processing period, as well a plenty of makgeolli tasting and documentation. We highly valued the knowledge and experience that Joe and the team at Baekusaeng Makgeolli provided. Aside from amassing a great deal of new technical information, we appreciated the tailored and organic nature of the sessions as well as the cultural comradery. Looking forward to future opportunities to engage with Baekusaeng and highly recommend a casual visit or a makgeolli class to anyone interested.

Great experience when visiting Korea. You learn about what traditional Makgeolli is, in comparison to what you can buy in the supermarkt or drink in a restaurant. Very interesting and Joe can answers all your questions. You can take the makgeolli home with you so you can do the rest of the process yourself. Thanks again!

My family and I attended a class with Joe. It was such an eye-opening experience! Joe is extremely passionate about his craft. We took home 3 bottles of his makgeolli, it tasted so different from commercially-made ones. Excited to start making our own makgeolli at home too.

Booked the class together with my dad and husband. Joe was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything in a way that made it fun and easy to understand. Converted them both to makgeolli drinkers for sure! His makgeolli was amazing, especially the ginger and the persimmon ones (so much that we bought 3 bottles to take home) You will leave the class with all the basics to start your own makgeolli brewing journey - can’t wait to start exploring different flavours and will definitely recommend this class to our friends visiting Seoul too! Tip: Make sure you have enough luggage space to take home your own makgeolli creation ☺️

It was really funny and we learnt a lot. We had some Tasting before the class and you could really taste the difference. The process of making your own makgeolli was really nice as well.

I took this class on a trip to Seoul on the recommendation of a good friend, and it really exceeded my expectations. Joe is extremely friendly and knowledgable about his craft, and is a great teacher. You will learn the history of Makgeolli and sample numerous varieties, from the mass produced that you see all over Korea (and artificially flavored) to the very traditional that are hard to find. Finally, you will work with your hands to make your own Makgeolli. Through this class, I not only gained an appreciation for this traditional Korean beverage but also learned much more about brewing generally, all while having fun. Highly recommend for all visitors to Korea with an interest in traditional drinks.

I had an awesome time at Baekusaeng! The owner Joe started the class by letting us taste a wide variety of makgeolli, before moving on to describe the science behind it, the process of making it and what to look out for. We prepared one batch of makgeolli and got one container to take home and ferment ourselves, paired with instructions what to do and what do look out for! I can definitely recommend the class as a way to learn about and experience the wide variety of makgeolli!

In just two hours we learned everything we wanted to know about making Makgeolli. Joe is extremely passionate about his craft and was very happy to answer all of our questions. Would've wished I had known about this course earlier! If I could give six stars, I would. Can recommend 110%!!! Also, he kept refilling our glasses. :-)

This was a fantastic class! We were visiting our daughter and she found out about the Makgeolli class and signed us up! Joe is an excellent teacher and we had a ball taking the class (may have had a few cups of Makgeolli and Soju in the process!)! We learned a lot and look forward to making more of our own! Highly recommended if you are ever in Korea! Thanks Joe!

FUN! Definitely a hands-on experience. You get to know what Korean traditional makgeolli is all about, and Joe is an extremely knowledgeable and talented guide. Creating your own makgeolli is really rewarding -- and you get to touch, smell and taste all the elements of your craft brew along the way. It's great for friends, or couples. There were a lot of laughs in our group. But there's more! Along the way, Joe explains the different flavors of all varieties of Korean traditional liquor, from makgeolli to soju. You'll be trying a wide variety of spirits, and you'll have the opportunity to impress your friends later with what you've learned. Baekusaeng gives you exactly what you want from an experience like this -- hands-on learning, tons of useful information, refreshing drinks, and a lot of FUN!

Joe and his wife were very welcoming and I had a great time tasting various makkolis and learning how to make traditional Korean rice wine. At the end of the class you even get to bring the rice wine that you made back. Lots of learning materials provided after the class and interesting nuggets of information shared by Joe made the class really engaging and fun. 10/10 would recommend if you have a couple hours to spare in Seoul!

I am korean and local. I took my two friends to let them know about korean Macgeolli. Both love korea and Macgeolli as well. The host, Jo, is generous and friendly and knowledgeable guy! He gave us tasting difficult types of Macgeolli. They were all nice and delicious:) Even if i am korean and tour guide, i learned so much things and had a big fun! Highly recommended !! 👍

I love makgeolli, so finding out about this tasting and creating makgeolli experience was perfect for me! My friends and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time thanks to Joe's engaging, likeable personality, and knowledge, skilled craftsmanship of makgeolli. Not only was it a lot of fun, but also very educational. I'm a history buff, so learning the origin and usage of makgeolli in Korean history, specifically the Joseon Dynasty era, was interesting. Also learning about the key differences between traditional and commercial makgeolli was enlightening to say the least! If you love makgeolli, are interested in home brewing, love Korean history, and making fun travel memories, I highly recommend this experience! 💯
