Nothing beats getting to be up close and personal with whales and sea lions with this company. I had an amazing time paddling through the most beautiful scenery.

Great tour in a beautiful area! This is a small locally owned business with awesome owners that guided us through the water. Super helpful getting us geared up and loved the stories shared as well as local information on the wildlife. Highly recommend !

Myself and my mom were on the Alaska cruise at the end of May/early June. We are pretty active people and enjoy the outdoors! We got lucky and it was just the two of us with the guide, Dave. We had a great experience and had great views, saw eagles, bears and other animals! Awesome experience and would recommend to anyone. We kayaked pretty far since it was a small group, the water was good and we were fast. However, even if you don't go as far as we did, you would still get to see a ton! We had pretty meh weather. Was raining for part of it, but was still a great experience and you're given all the gear you could possibly need! Everyone was so nice and I wish I could go again!

My family of 6 took this kayak excursion during our cruise port stop the last week of September 2023. The staff assisting with the kayaks were so kind and friendly. They were patient and helpful as they explained how to use the kayak equipment. They had everything available that we needed for the excursion. Thankfully, we had a beautiful day. Unexpectedly (for us) there were hump back whales in the bay we were kayaking and we were able to see one whale in particular as he would dive for food. We had the most fun following the whale around the bay. My kids were also excited about the large crab and moonstar that the staff allowed them to see/hold. The experience was a highlight of our trip. I highly recommend anyone to book an excursion with this group. We loved it!

We chose this trip instead of the one offered by the cruise ship because of the reviews. I'm so glad we did. This was a very small tour group that adjusted their trip to the animals. The day that we went the bears were not about, but the humpbacks were very active. We were able to witness them feeding over and over. Our guide explained the bubble circles, why there were so many gulls, and about the area. By far this was my favorite activity in Alaska.

Dave is personable and knowledgeable. Kayaks move smooth and are a dream to paddle. They have sprayskirts and waterproof thermal glove to stay warm and relatively dry. This is beautiful country and Dave and Michelle provide an hospitable front row seat. Thank you!

This was the best experience and excursion ever!!! The tour changed to what was active and we were able to see whales up close on a kayak. The guides were friendly, and fantastic, and made you feel confident with kayaking, as this was my first time kayaking. I cannot wait to book our next Alaska cruise and do this again.

The tour is 2-3 hours, usually 2, according to Fairweather Kayaks FAQ. The company reserves the right to cancel/rebook if it is raining. They provide snacks, rain ponchos, rain paddle mitts. They also provide a kayak "skirt" so your bottom half does not get so wet. Guides are very knowledgeable and safety conscious. There is a safety boat that travels between the quicker and slower paddlers. Both guides and boat are within radio contact. All was well as we entered the water and paddled past the harbor. Then, it started raining lightly (nothing they can do about that!). Then it continued to rain, and got stronger. Because we were slower paddlers, we were already soaked by the time we reached the safety boat. This is when we received the rain poncho and mitts. Fortunately, it was not very cold, so we were okay. I also had worn a thick wool cap. I wore my glasses but without "wipers" they were pretty spotted with rain, which affected my distance vision. We saw deer, eagles, starfish, jellyfish, crab catching and a crab! Besides raining, the fog rolled in so we all headed back. It may have only been two hours, but it felt like more. As we were close to the harbor, one guide spotted whales---not breaching, but chasing salmon. They would bubble and we could hear that--we could make out their backs, sort of, and their fins. Of course, this discovery halted the kayaking back for another 10-15 minutes. If I had had this kayaking on a beautiful clear day, I would give it 5 stars, and I appreciate the effort our guide put in to point things out to us---I gave her a good tip! I know they can't control the weather, but I do think distributing the ponchos and mitts ahead of time would have made it more pleasant for me.

We booked this private excursion while on our Alaska cruise. No regrets. They were organized and provided all the equipment we needed to get into the water quickly and safely. Soon after shoving off we saw a pod of whales in the distance and paddled out toward them. Keeping a safe distance we watched the whales - I recommend bringing some binoculars. As we watched from the kayaks we could also see the whale watching boats crowding in onn the whales. Some might say they were following the whales...from my vantage point it looked like they were chasing the whales who were trying to get away from them. At the risk of sounding snobby I think watching the whales from the kayaks is a little more respectful and pure way to be a part of nature without treating it like an open water zoo. We also saw some sea lions who were curious about us as well as a lot of other smaller wildlife that the slow pace of kayaking affords you time to notice. Highly recommend this trip.

Michelle and Cody greeted us when we arrived and were always close by in the safety boat in case we neded them. And Dave was a fabulous guide - very knowledgeable and friendly. With his expert guidance, we were within 50 feet of a pod of giant humpback whales. Wonderful experience and we would highly recommend it.

The experience was amazing. Cody, Dave and Michelle made us feel like a part of the family. Apart from 2 of us there was only one couple more. And what's most important, we saw whales from a close distance!!! It was like a private whale show. We are waiting for the pictures which Michelle took. They provide water, snacks and shuttle to Icy Strait Point. Highly recommend!

Our kayak tour was great. The scenery was beautiful and we really enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. Highly recommend this tour if you are interested in seeing the beauty of Alaska with a local guide. Cody & Freddie worked hard to make sure we were seeing the wildlife around us and enjoying ourselves. Hope to make it back to Icy Strait Point/Hoonah again in the future.

Had a great experience!! Dave and Terry were fantastic tour guides. The scenery was beautiful. We spent a total of 3 hours in the water, and got a comprehensive tour from locals who knew the area well and lived there year round. Would highly recommend for solo travelers, friend groups and families.

Dave was fantastic. We enjoyed his stories and sense of humor. He has over 30 years of being a salmon fisherman. For me learning about a different life and experiences first hand really makes this so enjoyable. And of course the beautiful landscape, fish, jellyfish, eagles. Bears must have been napping. Held a sea starfish and giant grab!
