If you have moved to the area or visit frequently, getting some tips about the local restaurants is helpful, but if you are a one-time visitor, I think you are better off using YELP. Our tour guide was "unique," insisting on bringing her little poodle, and took us to one place that sucked. She admitted she was working off a "budget" from the business owners, so I think she had a conflict of interest - providing us with minimal $ experience. While some locations have real local charm, others do not so much.

Susan was energetic and fun. She shared a lot of Kauai and Hawaiian history. The food was excellent and walking Hanapepe was enlightening and delightful

This is the second time that we have had a food tour on Kauai, first one was in Hanalei and this one was on Kapaa. Our guide was fantastic and the places we went to had some really good food! Highly recommend this tour

A 3 hour tour was offered. There were descriptions of trying local foods. The two of us paid €227 for it. The tour began at 11:00 a.m. at Aloha Ginger Beer in Lihue. There you could taste different types of gingerberries and get a cup on the way. Half a hot dog was served with it. Both the beer (non-alcoholic) and the small hot dog were very good. Then we went to a local market across the street. There was a bowl of ice cream with fruits and nuts on top. It wasn't bad, but the guide didn't seem to like it either. Afterwards we walked to a sports bar. Here, small pieces of tuna fried in tempura were served on leaf salad. Was very good. Then the tour ended after 2 hours! We had hoped for more. Hot dogs, ice cream and tempura fish are most likely not typical Hawaiian dishes. I don't want to complain - but it wasn't what we booked. Too short, too little and not typically local. A pity.
