As an experienced ice climber who doesn't get out that often these day, I've done this climbing group tour with RMA before to keep up my skills, run laps on top-rope, and just have fun with others, and it's always a professionally guided experience. They provide all the gear (but you can use your own if you have it), transportation, and their ACMG certified guides set everything up and perform all the necessary safety checks. On this outing, I turned out to be the only participant, and while it would have been completely fair of them to cancel the tour, it went ahead anyway, so I had a private climbing guide for the group cost for the day, which was great. The guide was very knowledgeable about ice conditions at the various climbing locations, and we opted for the best available spot given the deteriorating spring ice climbing conditions. The guide provided belays all day, safety checks, tips to improve my climbing techniques, good conversation, and managed to take several photos of me climbing along the way. All in all, the usual great experience with Rockaboo.

Incredible experience with Maarten. We climbed at “the end of the world” and had a great time. Maarten ensured the whole activity was safe and everyone was properly equipped. Thanks again for a great day!

Went ice climbing with Martin in Maligne canyon. we would have loved to ice climb in tangle creek falls but considering weather on the day, Maligne canyon was the best option Martin seemed knowledgeable about Jasper area and loves his job. We were a group of 3 friends and one other person joined ,Martin went through all the safety points and was patient and attentive to all four of us. It was -20+ with wind chill on the day and he made sure we were warm, offered us mittens and jackets to keep us warm. Highly recommend Rockaboo and Martin . Hope I can make it to glacier hike with same team during summer/fall

Absolutely sensational experience with these guys. They are experts in what they do but still had patience and humour for beginners- a joy to experience climbing up a frozen waterfall. Brilliant!

This was truly an awesome experience knowing that it’s an ice cap that you’re on. Just wear the proper footwear and you’re good to go!

This experience was really amazing for a person who had never done this before! Our guide Maarten was the perfect person to introduce us to this! The only reason why I rate it a 4 out of 5 was that we each only got to climb the mountain twice per person, which in my opinion was not enough for a 6 hours tour. As we had no experience it was normal that we had to be properly explained what we have to do, but the 2 hours drive in total and the gearing up made that we had less quality time on the mountain itself.

My two boys (16 & 20) and I did the Jasper Ice Climbing experience in Maligne Canyon this past Sunday. It was an outstanding day of ice climbing and learning about this sport in a safe (albeit busy) environment. I'd recommend this to anyone who is relatively fit and has a sense of adventure. Our guide, Marteen, was one of the best mountain guides I've ever had. (And I've done quite a few heli-skiing trips, paddling adventures, etc. with numerous guides over the years.) He was professional, highly-skilled, and made safety a priority. Yes, it takes a bit of time to get all the gear straightened out, drive to the parking area, hike to the location, etc. However, the journey is well worth it!

We went ice climbing at Tangle Falls with Max, the owner of Rockaboo Mountain Adventures. We had no climbing experience and we were initially nervous about the climb and what to expect. Our day started at the Rockaboo office where we got fitted with equipment and signed waivers, then we piled in to the shuttle and Max drove our group of four climbers to Tangle falls, which is about an hour away from Jasper. After parking, we got on our gear, and it was a five minute walk to the climbing site. Max set up two lines for climbing, talked about safety, and gave us an intro to climbing. We then took turns ice climbing and belaying. Max checked everyone's setup before each climb, watched and encouraged us, and even took a few pictures (the ones posted here). Max made us feel very safe about climbing and was a great instructor. Tangle falls is about a 30 meter climb with lots of humps to stop and rest. It took us about 15-20 minutes to climb to the top and each person in the group had the opportunity to climb three or four times before the end of the day. I would have climbed at least once or twice more if there had been more time. The ice was very different in the two climbing areas, despite being only a few meters apart. The one side had more sun so the ice was softer and wetter, but easier to get the crampons and ice picks to dig in. The ice was much harder at the second line and I had difficulty kicking in the boots and getting a good grip. At one point my crampons gave out under me but the rope held me up and I was able to maintain my grip on the ice picks and recover. It wasn't scary, but my arms were a little tired and I appreciated a brief rest while belaying my partner while he climbed. We didn't feel particularly sore or tired at the end of the day, but we felt it in our core muscles two days later. My partner and I are in our early 40s and hike regularly as our main activity. Everyone had an amazing time and we're looking forward to future adventures with Rockaboo. I had initially booked for three people but one person had to cancel a few days before the climb and it was easy to get a credit.

This was an absolutely fantastic guided experience that I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to try the sport with safe and experienced guides. We had the pleasure of getting to know Martin and Brooklyn and they took great care of us. The climbing itself is a blast, even for those who have extensive rock climbing experience. What impressed me most was how efficiently the guides used their time. They gave us the knowledge we needed quickly but effectively so we could get to climbing as soon as possible. While one guide was getting us kitted out, the other was out setting up the rope, so we maximized our time on the ice.

Absolutely incredible experience. Can’t recommend enough for adventure seekers. As someone who enjoyed hiking a via Ferrara, this was right up my alley. And Maarten was the most fantastic guide!

I was lucky I was the only booking that tour at that day so I pretty much had a private guided Ice Climbing experience. And it was awesome. Martin the guide is an absolute professional, he talks you through everything and at no point I felt unsafe. Great view and scenery too in the Maligne Canyon. We walked through the canyon on the frozen ice. Highly recommend it

Overall our groups experience was top notch. we are a adrenalin junkie group so nothing was overly a challenge where it would freeze us in our tracks. Our guide was great at giving some technical tips to help improve our climbing abilities. As well we were able to go to the rare forming upper falls at bridge 1, which gave us the space to ourselves without having to share allowing for more climbing time. now our group was very similar in fitness and self reliance abilities so not needing to be babysat was appreciated. the only reason this was not a 5* rating is we had a huge safety mishap with a climbers knot not being verified for correctness and failed half way up (was quickly rectified by our guide when identified). I attribute this to the overall groups knowledge and experience and our guide took that as our ability to be competent. I would suggest double confirming everyone knows how to buddy check their climbers and belayers before allowing more independence on a beginners adventure. Now that said our experience was AMAZING. and I 100% recommend rockaboo.

We had a fantastic day ice climbing and canyon crawling at Maligne Canyon. Rockaboo has professional, fun, gracious guides. We especially appreciated the climbing instruction, and learning about all the protection systems. Being able to visit the upper part of the the canyon was a dream come true. Totally recommended!

Our guide Jesse made sure all four members of our first time ice climbing group had a blast and were able to accomplish a super cool experience and showed us a much quieter more exclusive part of a super popular tourist destination in the Canadian Rockies. Rapelling down into the canyon to start the tour gave us an incredible new perspective of the canyon and the water fall which we climbed after as well as gave us a good show of his skills in keeping us safe and how the equipment worked and the redundancies in place to ensure our safety at all times. The guides knowledge and communication skills made picking up this new skill relatively effortless and the continued pointers and hints and tips made climbing a fun rewarding learning experience (and work out!) Being able to work as teams and learn how to belay as well as climb kept everyone engaged and warm the whole time and the walk back out through the canyon was adventure around every curve as well as gorgeous limestone formations and golden stone fly cases to remind you of the river flowing beneath your feet. Would HIGHLY recommend to anyone looking to experience maligne canyon in a new more intimate way. Also the ice climbing was a BLAST!

We had the best day on our trip. I was very nervous about booking this but felt like I was missing out if I didn’t. And I definitely would have. Jesse was our guide and he was AMAZING! Just the right amount of a fun time, friendly, knowledgeable, experienced and making us feel completely safe and in good hands the entire time! I trusted him the entire day and I was right to do so. The ice climbing part was fun and felt safe although not easy. I’d say an intermediate level of fitness is required for a few parts. Then the ice we were walking on while coming down the canyon was melting because of the warmer weather today but I couldn’t have felt in better hands than with him. He checked everything, every spot we put our feet on, we followed all of his instructions and everything went perfectly. Fair warning, you would still need to be gutsy to do this trip. Its definitely not for everyone but was made for us! Thanks Jesse!!!

The experience was disappointing. It started off great no issues but after climbing, it went down hill. We were not very successful climbing and our guide was kinda only giving the same suggestions which after falling multiple times wasn’t very helpful. Additionally the boots we were given were very hard to do up and it required the guide to do them up to get them tight enough to climb. The ill fitting boots made it harder to climb as well. After climbing and falling we then had to walk up hill where we were left behind multiple times by the guide and the group meaning we were walking by ourselves in an area we were not familiar with in the cold. There was no real waiting for us to catch up the guide was just always far ahead. At one point when we were not on the actual trail it was another participant who waited for us and checked on us after my sister fell really hard. Which the guide never saw or asked about because he was always to far ahead. There was no hey are you guys okay. We were also rushed at the end up hill and at the transport van. Rockaboo states reasonable fitness level but it sure didn’t feel like that was enough or acceptable.

What an absolutely amazing experience! We were on tour with Maarten and only 1 other couple which made for a small and intimate team. Maarten was so helpful, especially with my wife and me who had zero experience ice climbing. My wife got pretty nervous about it, but Maarten was patient and explained everything clearly. This was our favorite event of our trip to Jasper, and we definitely want to come back!

My husband and I booked the ice-climbing tour and we had an amazing time. I have previous climbing experience and my husband does not. We both had such a great day and learned so much from Max! Safety is of utmost importance with this company and we felt safe throughout everything. Max is incredibly knowledgeable, skilled and communicative - we will 100% be using Rockaboo again! Highly, highly recommend this incredible experience!!

We are glad we went. We both managed two successful climbs (the opportunity is there for many more climbs, we just chose to stop after two) and got great pics for our experience scrapbook so take this with a grain of salt: My husband and I are in our fifties and after visiting multiple canyons in Banff, LL, Yoho and Jasper, we thought this would be a fun experience. We booked the group tour with Jen and Alejandro and went to Tangle Falls. It's a beautiful location about an hour from Jasper. We probably should have booked a private lesson. Maybe the Covid precautions threw off the flow, or maybe Jen and Alejandro don't work together often. Both were very nice and experienced individually but their chemistry seemed off as team and they didn't have a cohesive plan for the teaching part of the experience. We learned that ice climbing can be very dangerous and covering a few basics in a haphazard way ends in bumps and bruises but thankfully nothing worse. Again, this is coming from someone well out of their 20's and 30's so our perspective is different and this review is directed at an older group. If you asked the 20 somethings in our group, they loved the "here are the basics; go climb!" approach. We needed a bit more attention to detail. Would I recommend Rockaboo? Yes, but, pay attention and remember your safety is your responsibility first. Don't be shy if your crampons keep falling off, or if you are way off the line and are about to swing like a pendulum across the face of the ice. The guides are keeping their eyes on five or six different people, so they might miss something. Some thoughts that may help you for a future trip: Clothing: Layer your coats so you have one lighter one to climb in and one heavy layer to belay in or stand around in. Same with gloves: at least 2 pair, one lighter one for climbing and one heavy for belaying. Hat: no pom poms bc you need a safety helmut to go over it. A note on boots: Rockaboo will provide you with boots (we went with the leather boots and were not cold at all). My recommendation is to try on your boots, make sure they fit but then put your own boots back on until you get to the falls. Its an hour away, at least, and these boots are inflexible (for good reason) and if you are driving your own car it's not really a good idea to drive in them. Hopefully, this helps get you up on the ice!
