There are so many ruins to see and the details you get from this tour because of Luciano Leone is amazing! He has his own binder of photos from his own experience of working on this site that just adds to the detail.

What an amazing experience. Viator made the whole process very easy for us. We were met as informed and were in a small group. Our tour guide was Luciano Leone, a most wonderful character and experienced and passionate archaeologist. We were all given ear pieces which were very useful, especially when we were around other people viewing in same areas or if you were a little behind the group, so we’re able to still hear what was being said. The information shared by Luciano was extremely detailed and he also included some humour when engaging with our tour group too, which made the whole experience so personal and pleasurable. Luciano went above and beyond and we feel so lucky to of been able to of had him as our guide. He included a lot of additional information and also had a folder which he collated himself which contained lots of images and information to highlight or detail anything that needed a bit more in-depth explanation or needed a more visual reference to support what we were looking at and the information being relayed. Having Luciano definitely enhanced our experience. We would highly recommend using Viator and this particular experience too.

I always enjoy the actual human touch. It helps to have someone point out interesting facts and then one can explore on one’s own after the tour has ended.

It was a brilliant visit and Luciano made the tour and life in Herculaneum come to life. I would recommend this trip as an essential part of your visit to Naples

Excellent guide; felt like we experienced what it was like to live in Luxurious Herculaneum versus the Industrial lifestyle in Pompeii; Enjoyed learning about daily life through his perspective; He gave meaning to everything, so we knew what we were looking at. He thrilled us with “surprises” throughout

Luciano was a fantastic guide, very enthusiastic and so knowledgeable. I would never visit Herculaneum without a guide - you would not know what you are looking at!! He brought the ancient city to life for us and I really appreciated that. Thank you

Our small group tour of Herculaneum was amazing and well worth the detour to Naples and getting a guided tour of the historic site. We only had a full day in Naples so after much research, we decided to see Herculaneum instead of Pompeii. The preservation of the town was amazing with mosaic floors and frescos on the walls. It's simply amazing how incredibly preserved the town was. But the understanding and explanation of life there, how the eruption preserved the town and how it was differnt from Pompeii came to life through Luciano Leone's tour. His tour through the town described the citizens, their town and their way of life through the eyes of an an archeologist and historian. Walking through town with Luciano, hearing his explanations, seeing pictures of life then and now, and other pictures of what was found where in the town was appreciated a thousand times more than had we simply purchased an audio tour. We highly recommend taking the small group tour with Luciano. His English was very good and he kept reaching out to the group to ensure everyone understood him. My (teenage) kids appreciated that Luciano reached out to members in our group asking for their name and directly including them in the conversation by saying something directly to them or asking them a question. It was a great way to help everyone participate and understand what happened there. Thanks for both an amazing and educational experience through history.

The tour was amazing. The guide was so knowledgeable and interesting. We nearly didn't go because it was difficult to get a train from Rome with a foreign credit card but it was so worth it. I would recommend to everyone. Was one of the highlights of our Rome stay

My wife and I scheduled two trips with Askos tours. The small group with an archeologist for Pompei and the small group with an archeologist for Herculaneum and therefore will review them separately. This review is focused on Herculaneum. In our opinion Herculaneum is a richer, deeper experience as the city is smaller, more daily life article survived because it died a different death and it prepared us for the larger tours at Pompei. If you can swing both trips. You should. The day started just after 10am when we met our guide, Dr. Luciano Leone at the assigned meeting area just outside the ticketing building. The small group setting made it a great balance for the incredible insights and gems that could only come from an expert guide and archeologist and the ability to ask questions as the tour progressed. Luciano had incredible insights, came with additional materials in his book with some different and larger perspectives, and had all kinds of historical props that just deepended the experience. I won't spoil anything here. But he would get us into a specific position, tell us to look a certain direction and Boom! You would see something that thousands of others would have missed. He had a passion for this site and archeology like very few. Our entire experience was amazing and we definitely came away with a unique experience. We highly recommend this tour group and Dr. Luciano Leone in specific for a first class experience. Some other tips: Go early. Most crowds don't Start showing up until mid morning. We arrived when the park opened and were almost alone in the park. Our tour started at 10am, but our pre-visit helped ground us. The solitude really brings the personal experince home. You will cover an incredible amount of ground on the tour. But it's not all of it. We stayed on in the park after the tour. Armed with all we learned it really helped inform our visit after the tour. If taking a taxi from Naples, make sure you arrange travel back. Trying to get a cab or uber was impossible. We ended up walking about 1500 meters to the train station. The Herculaneum ticket office has free luggage storage for big bags which was a big help for us as we made our way to Pompei after the visit. Make sure to pack a water bottle or two

Great tour with a wonderful tour guide Anna! The information was clear, and did feel different to a standard tour, with a more archaeological focus while still being accessible and interesting for all.

Fantastic tour and great to have such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. Two hours was about right for the guided tour but I could have happily spent a few more hours just wandering around as there’s so much to see at Herculaneum.

Luciano Leone is absolutely fantastic and so funny! I’ve studied ancient Roman history at university, but I certainly learnt lots of new things from Luciano including fascinating and very exclusive feeling archaeological insights. My fiancé and I both agree that this tour was our favourite day of our Europe trip thus far. Despite apologising that English was not his first language we had no issue understanding him. We would recommend this tour to anyone considering it, fantastic value for money!

With our tour guide, Sara, we wandered through the streets of Herculaneum, imagining what life was like for the residents in the days before Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Bath houses, eating establishments, shops, homes of the wealthy, fountains and a school - all evidence of a bustling coastal city. Beautiful artistic detailing, like frescos, paintings and mosaics are still partially intact. Incredible to think that all this was buried under volcanic rock!

Luciano Leone is a very knowledgeable archeologist and when doing the tour you benefit from this. He is quite fun and dynamic as well and very, very Italian. This is a great tour!
