A great experience, the local market was fun, interesting and we got to try and use a little Chinese language. Lance our guide was great from start to finish and took lots of fabulous pictures which meant we could get with our cookery class. Highly recommended this tour, one small little grip, the location of the cookery class was quite a distance and took us about an hour, better to tell clients in advance.

We had a fantastic day with Lance. We visited the local market, learned all about Chinese spices and local Food. We made Sichuan springrolls and Dumplings. After some tea and snacks we started making buns. It was harder than expected but fun to learn. We highly recommend this trip and thank Lance for this special day in Chengdu!

Lance was a fantastic host with lots of knowledge of the market foods and was happy to answer all of our questions about literally everything! He and the professional chef had lots of patience with us when we found it difficult making the steamed buns (my thumb had a mind of its own!) My partner didn’t really want to come along but I persuaded him it would be fun and now thanks to Lance and the Chilli Cool House crew, he wants to try more cooking classes on our world tour!! I would definitely recommend taking one of their classes whilst visiting Chengdu - it’s a must do.

Thank you guys for the unique experience. Wish you best.

We had a great time with Ocean and the master chef during our half day baozi and market tour class. It poured rain but Ocean was a gracious guide and very knowledgeable about all the market foods. The baozi instruction was thorough and patient. It’s harder than it looks! Thank you Chilli Cool China!

I had a blast making dumplings and bao zi with Chilli Cook on a recent solo trip I took to China. Lance was prompt in picking me up from my accommodation in Chengdu and was friendly and helpful throughout the entire tour. At the market, I learned about different fruits, vegetables and spices, practiced how to order some food items in Mandarin, tried my hand at creating some pork dumplings, and sampled some tasty street food. After leaving the market, we retired to a more quiet area and enjoyed some tea and snacks acquired from the market. At the school, I learned to make two types of bao zi fillings (pork and veggie), how to mix and roll the dough, and spent time practicing the art of forming the bao zi. It's a lot tougher than it looks, but the instruction was excellent, and I learned three different ways to form the buns. After steaming our works of art, we sat down and devoured the delicious food we had made. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chengdu, and I know that when I come back, I'll be signing up for the Sichuan cooking class with Chilli Cool (the food they were making in the next kitchen smelled amazing!!).

First time joining cooking classes when overseas. Lance was on time picking us up from our accommodation block. Was expecting a middle aged man but came a young man who spoke very good English (not that we needed) and had good energy. Lance knows his spices, vegetables and herbs. It is very helpful Lance is able to translate the Chinese food names to English so the rest of the tour members can relate to what they understood best. On hindsight, I am glad i chose this class over the Dan Dan Mian class as we had gone away with new found knowledge on how to form the bun in its traditional shape. To have someone teaching you in real time rather than viewing through videos was definitely more helpful. All in all, no regrets. A young enterprising man craving out a niche in the industry. Being the #1 tour is not easy but Lance and his team has managed to do it and maintain. Great job!

Since booking the tour, Chilli Cool were great at communicating and were very helpful arranging pick up and drop off from our hotel. As our hotel was outside of the ring road we paid a small fee for this (it cost less than a taxi!) which we didn’t mind. Once all members of our group were picked up we headed to the local “workers market”. Our “very handsome, cool and humble” tour guide Lance was brilliant. He taught us a lot about the different produce in the markets and how they are used in Chinese medicine and Sichuan cuisine. He even taught us how speak a little bit of the local language so we could have a go at purchasing items ourselves. We sampled some local spring rolls which were very different to ours back home, but were delicious 🤤 Once we had toured the market we headed to the Chilli Cool kitchen where we began to make the bao buns. We also learnt how to drink Chinese tea properly and sampled some delicious dumplings which we had picked up from the market. The process of making the dough for the bao was extremely challenging at first (for beginners like us). However, after being guided by our master chef we managed to perfect the technique and enjoyed some fantastic bao buns together around the table. The atmosphere was great and we had so much fun and banter. Even with a group from 4 different countries we all shared jokes and had a brilliant day. Couldn’t recommend Lance and the team highly enough. We definitely would book another Chilli Cool tour in the future if we revisit Chengdu. Thanks guys 🐼 🥟 🍜 🇨🇳 🍻

A great class. Market visit was eye opening and informative. We were able to interact with quite a few stall owners, trying our hand at making wontons and sampling products. The class was hands on. My only disappointment was that we had booked a class to learn how to make steamed buns but it ended up being a dumpling making class (which I already cook at home). I assumed I had made a mistake but when I checked the email I had booked the right class. A minor thing though, as I still thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Can’t believe this school isn’t yet the number 1 thing to do in Chengdu! Lance met us from our hostel and we visited a local market, trying fruits and snacks as we went and had a go at a few Chinese phrases with the locals. Then we had tea and more snacks before our class. They were so patient with teaching us the techniques and we honestly were laughing together the whole time. Lance had even bought us plum wine and dumplings from the market which we enjoyed while our buns cooked. At the end we got gifts and so many buns to take home! All in all it was honestly such value for money and one of our best China experiences of the trip! Thank you Lance for all your help, jokes and of course just how humble you were!!! 😄😄😄 Love Rosie and Rory U.K.

I took the Baozi making class with my partner, my mum and my grandmother on a family trip to Chengdu. We were picked up from our respective accommodation in a taxi, and met close to a local food market. We spent some time exploring the market with Hazel and Lance, who were extremely knowledgeable about Chinese and Sichuan food. As a big foodie, it was a real treat to be able to find out more about certain elements of Chinese cuisine from such experts. After wandering around the market, learning a few words of Chinese and trying some delicious spring rolls, we headed back to Chilli Cool HQ for a cup of tea and the class. All four of us are vegetarian, but there was another person in the group who was not, so there were a selection of different veggie and non-veggie fillings for the buns. The process was fascinating and well explained, and I have successfully made baozi since getting home, so I must have learned something! Lance and Hazel were both extremely friendly and chatty and the whole experience was one of my favourite days of our China trip. I'd highly reccommend the class, and thought it was excellent value for money.

Our guide Lance, was fun, friendly and extremely insightful. We were guided through a (very) local produce market, one that I would have otherwise never found. The market is filled with unique vegetables, meat and spices. As well as being dotted with street food vendors. Anything we wanted to try was paid for by the tour. Lance had arranged actives with a few vendors. The ladies at a dumpling stall taught us to fold dumplings. The actual cooking class takes place in a beautiful teahouse courtyard. We made an obscene about of boazi so please go hungry, and don't eat too much at the market. I recommend taking the tour with 2 to 4 other people.
