Ended up with a private tour! Lance was a super informative and friendly guide through the wet market tour, an unexpected side baijiu tasting, and throughout the cooking class. Despite my terrible cooking skills we managed to make 5 DELICIOUS dishes that I feel like I could recreate at home (given some more practice)! Lance was super easy to talk to and I learned so much about Sichuan and Chinese food and modern culture. Highly recommend this tour and this tour group!

This cooking class was amazing! We learned how to prepare traditional dishes from Sichuan. We also visited the local market to buy necessary ingredients and our guide helped us with some Chinese sentences. Our tour guide Lance and chef Jerry were amazing people. We had really nice conversation while eating all the food we cooked.

Go hungry as you’ll want to eat all the delicious food you will prepare. Our guide Jerry was enthusiastic and informative, with interesting anecdotes about the neighbourhood as we walked to the market. He invited us to try many different things along the way. We were especially delighted to be welcomed into the chefs home to prepare our meal, as the cooking school was being renovated. We found chef patient and professional as he guided us through the 5 traditional Sichuan dishes. They even developed vegetarian options for me which I think surprised even chef as to how tasty they were. Jerry was engaging and had wonderful English, and chef joined in the conversation during our shared dinner. A special memory to take away from our days in Chengdu.

Not only has the city of Chengdu been the highlight of our trip, but meeting Jerry our guide for the cooking class was the ultimate best! From the moment he said hello in the lobby, to the walking tour of the markets and all his knowledge, we were having so much fun. We asked so many questions and he kept up with us. He took pictures for us, and we stopped and talked to many local people (with Jerry’s help!). Then we went to the cooking class and met Chef Liang. He helped us create three dishes that turned out so good! He understands English well and Jerry helps translate everything. At the end of the class, we ate our freshly-cooked meal. It was so nice of the chef to invite us into his home for this experience. It was so interesting! I can’t say enough good things about how much fun we had. And they even gave us a bunch of recipes: not only what we cooked, but more to try on our own with the techniques and ingredients we learned.

We had a wonderful time with Jerry as our guide- you need to ask for him if you go on this tour. He was full of energy and a lot of fun. Our chef was Leon and he was knowledgeable and hosted us in his home.

It was a lot of fun. We went to a market we otherwise would not have found, saw a number of interesting things. And it was a blast to learn first-hand how to cook some Sichuanese dishes. It was explained to us in an understandable way, and they made sure to give us some criticism and room for improvement, as well.

Guide Dong Chen was extremely hospitable. A detailed insight into local ingredients was given at the markets. We were also introduced to his quaint farm on the city outskirts where we cooked many sichuan dishes in an outdoor setting. Would highly recommend!

We enjoyed the class very much and learned a lot of new information, even in details. We first went to a market and saw and tasted fruits and veggies we hadn‘t used before. Arriving at the kitchen, the chef first showed the preparation of the dishes step-by-step. Afterwards, we reproduced the cooking by ourselves, supported by both cooking teachers. We then tasted the dishes we had made and compared them to each other to better understand which details in preparation resulted in which tastes. I now feel much more informed about Sichuan kitchen and capable of reproducing the dishes we learned also at home. There was lots of possibility for hands-on-experience and we could also taste exotic food, as for example Chinese fermented duck eggs. Winter invested a lot of time to answer all our questions and cared for an easy-going and fun experience for us. He even took care of taking photos so we could focus on cooking. Thank you for the great time we had!

Winter picked up us at the hotel and took us to a local market which was very exotic experience. After we bought some of spices or local fruit, we moved to the farm for the cooking class. Although it was 1h drive, driving was comfortable. Once we arrived at the farm, we had a tea time with some snacks and started the cooking class. We made mapo tofu, twice cooked pork, and chinese lettuce. The chef was very kind to teach every detail and took care of us, while winter took good pictures and videos of us. We had dinner there after cooking (which was amazing) and winter sent us back to the hotel. Overall the experience was very good and definitely recommended.

My friend David and I decided to take this class on the recommendation of a friend, and we were not disappointed. Our tour started with a jaunt through the local market. The knowledgeable and lovely Ocean the low-down on all the local ingredients and how they are used in Sichuan cuisine. My favorite part was learning about the “pigs-anus” vegetable, that despite the name, actually tastes good. For the second part of the tour we went and cooked three dishes guided by a real chef. This was my favorite part of the afternoon, as we cut, roasted, and mixed, I really felt like I learned how to make a few of my favorite Sichuan dishes. This experience is highly recommended for anyone who is heading to Chengdu, and wants to learn how the amazing cuisine here gets made. - David and David.

I had a great experience cooking at Chilli Cool. Lance is fantastic at hosting cooking classes at the Chilli Cool Kitchen. He multitasked as a spice market tour guide, translator and photographer. Not only did I learn how to cook delicious Sichuan style food with a wok, but I got plenty of great photos of the experience. He also had spice market challenges for us that helped us interact with local people - very memorable! I highly recommend this experience. (One tip: many buildings in Sichuan don't have central heating, so make sure you dress warmly enough.)

My partner and I booked this tour due to the great reviews on trip advisor. We were not disappointed. Lance picked us up at our hotel and we meet the other people on our tour. We drove to the local market where Lance taught us about all of the different produce in Chengdu. We saw interesting animals and vegetables that I had never heard of. We had the opportunity to try samples of different traditional snacks and even made wontons. We went back to the tea house, enjoyed tea and some local snacks and met the chef we were cooking with. We cooked 3 amazing tasting dishes. It was a great afternoon learning about traditional Sichuan cuisine and learning more about the culture through Lance. We will definitely be cooking these meals back home if we can find all of the ingredients!! I would do this experience over again! Thank you Lance for a wonderful tour!

The trip started on time with tthe guide Hazel who picked me up at the hotel. We went to a local market so we can look at local produce. We bought some ingredients that we used to cook. We even tried some local food and learned to make some dumplings. Later in a home style tea house, we learned how to cook 3 different dishes. Chef Chan was very patient and sweet. We later shared the food we cooked. On the whole it was a very good afternoon. 5 stars!

Lance was an amazing guide! And his English was impeccable. They maintain an amazing cooking center and lounge next to the local market, with exceptional cooking equipment. Everyone who visits Chengdu NEEDS to take a tour and class!

My two kids and I had a great time on this tour and cooking class. The spice market was really cool, we got to try some spring rolls made fresh and tried our hand at making some dumplings in the market. The cooking class was a lot of fun where we made Kung Pao Chicken and Ma Po tofu. Tour guide, Hazel, was friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone visiting Chengdu.

I just completed a two and a half week trip around China. This was certainly the most memorable part. Our guide Hazel, was very informative and helpful and her english was great! She explained what types of food to get in the marketplace, helped us learn how to ask for them, and showed us what to look for in terms of quality. Afterwards, we earned how to cook from a terrific chef who critiqued our skills using various techniques and tools. Finally we enjoyed our food together as a group and had a lovely chat before parting ways. These kinds of experiences are what I imagine TripAdviser was built for.

The Chilli Cool cooking class was a highlight of our stay in Chengdu. Really enjoyed learning more about the Sichuan style of cooking and the ingredients used. Our guide and the chef were great teachers and we received the recipes and pictures right after the class. Highly recommended! Can't wait to try these recipes at home :)
