We loved this tour!!! Tom, our historian and guide, was so incredibly knowledgeable about Berchtesgarden and Obersalzberg. He showed us places we would have never found on our own. Imagine standing in the places and hearing about the individuals who determined the fate of millions. Our best tour in 31 days of traveling!!! Just Wonderful!!! My husband and I went on a half-day (4hr) tour with Tom in April 2024–even better that we went off-season. Tom picked us up from the train station and drove us to many historic sites providing insightful and entertaining commentary. Despite wintery weather, Tom had umbrellas and we got out of his car and explored the grounds. His use of tablet showing historic pictures was very helpful, especially before/after pics. Tom’s knowledge and passion was second to none. My husband loved the tunnels and bunkers, mostly because of Tom’s commentary. We will definitely reach out to Tom before booking any future tours!

I can honestly say that this was, far and away, the best tour we’ve ever completed! Tom is a treasure trove of information, and took us at our leisure to all of the places we wanted to go - and a lot that we didn’t even know about. We went in the late winter and didn’t realize that the Eagle’s nest is closed until sometime in May. We almost canceled and then thought maybe we will go see the actual ‘nest’ another time. However, what I learned from Tom is that the Eagles nest site is actually a minor ‘player’ in the decisions that were made by Hitler during his reign. Instead, we went to Hitler’s home site (now largely destroyed) where all of the major decisions were made. There were only a few other tourists there at the time and we had Tom all to ourselves for nearly an hour. We visited the bunkers, other high ranking Nazi Officers’ houses, and numerous other relevant WWII sites. Tom’s narration was perfect for us to learn about this important time in world history. At the end of the day, we decided that we absolutely got the best of all worlds, and don’t need to visit the actual ‘nest’. By all means, don’t let the winter closure of the site deter you - Tom more than makes up for the closure of the site. Fantastic tour, you won’t be disappointed!!!!

On the subject of WWII history, my husband would consider himself well read, but we completely underestimated the level of WWII history that exists in and around Berchtesgaden. This area of Germany is far more than Hitler’s Eagles Nest and is in fact a significant piece of the WWII Nazi leadership story. So it really did not matter that we went in March when the actual Eagles Nest was still closed. Do not be put off. Our guide, Tom Lewis has spent many years immersing himself in the history of this infamous place and through his thorough research and incredible network of contacts, he is able to guide you through the many fascinating locations in and around Berchtesgaden. My husband has enjoyed many WWII historical tours across Europe and parts of Asia and appreciates guides who know their stuff and who have lots of photographic material to help bring the story to life. In this regard, he said that Tom is definitely one of the best guides he has experienced. So much of this dark period in history is hiding in plain sight and with Tom’s help we were able to experience and understand the significance of Berchtesgaden and its importance to Hitler and the Nazi high command. If you are fascinated by WWII history then this is a must-see experience at any time of year.

Tom was EXCELLENT. We hesitated because it was winter time and the actual Eagles Nest Structure was closed for the season, but we were so pleasantly surprised. During our tour we learned that Hitler only visited that building less than 15 times and his true decision making and a large amount of time spent was at Berghof. We were able to see so much more. My husband who is quite a history buff, was taught so many new facts. Tom has dedicated his life's passion to this topic and you can really see it with every question answered. He was kind, funny and accommodating. The take away from this review is that if you are visiting in the winter time and are hesitant because the Eagles Nest is closed, please still book this tour. The Eagles Nest was not as important as everyone makes it to be. Berghof was and Tom will make you feel like money well spent with so many other facts and features he points out during this tour! Hope to see you in the summer Tom! From New York

Tom was fantastic and extremely knowledgable! We had the best tour and has been the highlight of our trip so far. Tom is a true historian and dispelled many of our misconceptions and stories we had heard. He took us through the bunkers in the new documentation center that opened as well as showed us around the mountain, the remains of Hitler’s residence and the Eagle’s Nest. If you are considering taking this tour, go ahead and book it!!

We recently enjoyed a private half-day tour in Berchtesgaden, Germany with Tom Lewis. He demonstrated to us that he is extremely knowledgeable of the WWII history in this area. He punctually met us at our hotel, guided us on our tour, and dropped us off at the train station, which was very convenient for us. The tour included a drive up the mountainside, information regarding the history of the Nazi presence in that location, photographs for us to peruse while traveling, a stop at Hitler's Berghof, a trip to The Eagle's Nest, and a multitude of anecdotes. Tom's in-depth knowledge, patience to address our questions, and articulate English manner made this a very worthwhile and enjoyable trip. I highly recommend engaging Tom Lewis for this tour.

This is a terrific and well worthwhile tour! Tom picked us up at the train station and showed us many sites. He had special insight and access to places others did not. He was able to explain how members of the Third Reich basically took over an entire hillside and who lived where. He also knew what happened to these various sites. The tour was wonderful and I highly recommend it!

My friend and I took a private half day-tour of the Eagle's Nest and the Obersalzberg with Tom, and it was top-notch. Tom possesses a wealth of knowledge about this period of history, and is very enthusiastic about sharing it and helping people gain a deeper understanding of what actually happened -- all the while dispelling some of the well-entrenched myths along the way. Tom has done some really in-depth research on the subject, and it is fascinating to hear him talk about the people he has met who had direct knowledge of, and contact with, the area during this time period. We also got to see much more than if we had simply done a bus tour to the Eagle's Nest. The logistics of the tour went very well. The meet-up/drop off was easy, and somehow Tom managed to time the tour of the Eagle's Nest itself so that there was no queue and we had the iconic elevator all to ourselves. He also surprised us with a short tour of one or two private areas at the Eagle's Nest that are not generally open to the public. Tom himself is delightful, and this tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. We highly recommend it.

Berchtesgaden area and the Eagle's Nest are full of WW2 history. Almost every corner relates to history and people. We had Tom Lewis as our guide for a 4 hour tour. Tom was magnificent he knew every inch of the area and what happened. It is a very interesting tour and I would highly recommend Tom as your guide. He was one of the most informed guides that I ever had.

Tom was fantastic. His presentation and command of this confusing but fascinating slice of history kept us spellbound on the edge of our seats from being picked up at the train station throughout the afternoon. Not a dull moment filled with behind the scenes special moments.

In September 2022 I booked the half day WWII tour option with guide Tom Lewis, it was worth every penny! Touring the remains of the Berghof were the highlight for me, followed by visiting the Eagle's Nest on top of the mountain. Not only is Tom a professional, but his passion for history was evident throughout the tour. He's even met with eyewitnesses that used to work at Hitler's Berghof home! I would highly recommend this tour, and Tom, to anyone wishing to learn about the history!

I can’t emphasize enough how pleased we were with the tour we took with Tom Lewis at Berchtesgaden/Eagle’s Nest. Tom is extraordinary expert on the topic of Hitler and his inner circle as well as Hitler’s mountain retreat. Most visitors only see the Kehlsteinhaus (The Eagle’s Nest). On Tom’s tour, we also visited the ruins of Hitler’s home (Berghof). It was eerie to stand on the steps where Hitler stood to receive guests at his home, and to stand where the giant front window receded into the floor to reveal the view over the town of Berchtesgaden. Seeing the ruins on the rest of the mountain and learning about the underground bunkers gives context to the history of what took place there (which I’m afraid most visitors don’t receive). Tom was highly knowledgeable, most professional and was always willing to answer all of our questions. I highly recommend a tour with Tom Lewis.

Tom was awesome. We first drove around obersalzburg while he pointed out what was new and what was built by the third Reich. This was interesting to see what the original purpose of the buildings compared to what they are now. Visiting bergof was part of this drive. After the drive we headed to the Eagle's nest where you get a bit of free time to roam around. The highlight, for me, was that Tom was very knowledgeable and it was clear that this history is a career for him. He was easy to talk to as well and even enjoyed my love of finding forgotten tunnels and artifacts.
