This smaller Chateau is an enchanting gem. Elegant gardens and Italian architecture and history of Charles VIII made it a favorite of all the Chateaus we have seen. Stroll the gardens, the verdant wooded paths, then read the story of its restoration. Unlike most of the chateaux we have seen on our trip, this one is fully and beautifully furnished in period.

We visited Chateau Gaillard on a Sunday. You walk the beautiful gardens including The Citrus Fruit Greenhouses and The Royal Orangery. The chateau was built by King Charles VIII and it is in the Italian style both inside and out. The gardens include "The Great Walk" which is a walk of around 375 metres long on a stone and gravel road bordered by Plane Trees planted over 150 years ago! The Chateau itself inside is not overly large but it is well set out with period furniture and tapestrys in each room and The Troglodytic Kitchen is something worth seeing. The food and drink offering was the only aspect of the Chateau that was not as good as it could or should be and it is something in my view the owner needs to adress. All up a worthwhile visit.

We stumbled on this interesting chateau almost by accident, hidden away along the road from Clos Lucé. It has a fascinating history - Mary Queen of Scots honeymooned here and first gardens in France to cultivate oranges. The gardens and orangery are particularly interesting, even in winter. Entry is slightly reduced if you've been to Clos Lucé (keep your ticket). There's a small café, which is pricey but very welcoming.

Upon checking out previous views on Château Gaillard, we found some negative reviews. We decided to try. The Château and gardens are lovely! We've found that Châteaus come in different sizes and restorations. Château Gaillard was just such. Not the shiniest, but quaint and charming. We felt it was worth the price. Interesting relics, vintage items and paintings. Minimal crowd. A nice place wander around and take your time. Tall mature trees and nice gardens are beautiful! Try the blood orange wine in the bar. It is delicious! Bought a bottle for later. Relaxing and beautiful. Give the Château a try!

Very welcoming at the ticket office and explained in detail what to see on my visit. Beautiful gardens and chateau was an added bonus. Would highly recommend if visiting Amboise

Well organised displays and visit, beautiful grounds, very good guide (Hélène). A main theme is based on the introduction of orange trees in France … and it is possible to taste a delicious orange cake!

This was an amazing Chareau and surrounds. Picturesque walk to the Chateau from Ambroise centre.Just along the road from Lu Clos,it could be a hundred miles away, it was so quiet and peaceful. Walking around the gardens was enlightening as to the extent of the work taken to restore them to their original plantings, in such a short time. The restoration of the Chateau has been tastefully done. The chateau isnt big but the history that has been recreated is exceptional. The family has used modern technology as well as historical items to enhance the visit. We would highly recommend Chateau Gaillard.

The thing I loved most about this chateau…no crowds! It’s off the beaten path and away from the super touristy area of Amboise. When I went, I could count on one hand the amount of people visiting. It was so peaceful. And if you’d like, they have seating around the grounds for you to take it all in. The outdoor space is massive and I got some really amazing photos bc, again, not a lot of people. It’s worth the visit!

C’est fantastique. From about 8 snakes preserved in jars to an olfactory cave where there are about 10 or 12 scents to experience, there are surprises everywhere at Gaillard. The guide booklets help you learn history and the uses or artistry of various decor and objects. Of the 9 chateaux, I’ve seen thus far, this was #1 or 2, in my opinion. For goodness sake, it has hundreds of years of history right up to the recent past where the 2016 European flood nearly approached its steps and certainly washed out or over its orangerie. Don’t rush. Read the available brochures and enjoy. If I’ve any criticism, the 12- minute film on the Dom Paciello who planted the orange grove is in French only, with no English explanation other than in the guidebooks. With four years of French under my belt, it was still too incomprehensible for me!

if you appreciate calmness, garden and the view of the chateau is lovely. very quite and very appealing for a relaxing walk. a bit secluded. and you can hear some animals and some birds in the near forest. the rooms are well maintained. and there's a refreshments that is interesting. a bit pricy but I guess its the valour of what they have to serve you with. so all in it was a nice experience. the staff are lovely and the lady with the very long hair was really heart warming. welcomed us qt the entrance, and served us too with our orange refreshers. beauty I wish there's events happens in this place. it will be very interesting

This chateau has history and has only been restored since 2011. You need to walk 200 metres along a track from a general carpark and there are few signs, it’s really puzzling. There were few visitors when we were there. There are rooms filled with historic furniture, presumably bought in from outside or made specially. It feels a bit like a theme park. Refreshment place doesn’t do hot drinks and is expensive. Very little to see compared with established chateaux. Poor value. It’s not a gem and it’s no longer hidden, someone presumably bought it, restored it and opened it as a tourist attraction. You can easily give it a miss.

I went with two family members as we had heard about it through signs on the road really, we were astounded by the place. Vegetable garden, ornamental garden, wooden park are a lovely on their own, but the chateau is next level. I didn't want to leave. Staff are super nice and feel proud to work here, there's a general feeling of both homeliness and exceptional beauty, walking around the place is a privilege. I originate from the area and have seen them all, twice if not more, but this chateau is exquisite. If you visit the area for the first time it's worth getting a reduced dual visit twinned ticket with Clos-Lucé which is across the road from the garden vegetable entrance.

The walk from Amboise to the Château-Gaillard was quintessential French and then Siri takes you somewhere else instead 🤨. However after all the walking and getting lost , thanks to bad navigation by Siri , we finally arrived at this beautiful place with a garden I wish I had. I highly recommend this place along with a the grand stroll 😊.

Hidden away for over 100 years Chateau Gaillard is the best kept secret in Amboise. After exploring Royal Amboise Chateau and Clos du Luce, we were recommended by our Chamber d'Hote hosts to walk just a little further and visit Gaillard. Next to the carpark for Clos du Luce, is a small sign directing you along a dusty track almost into the forest. You are given a warm welcome by the ticket office and immediately you are drawn into beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. Through the tall trees suddenly appears a beautiful immaculately and loving restored Chateau Gaillard with its famous Orangery (said to be the first place Oranges were grown in France) A jovial chap cutting the beautiful lawns greeted us and we went on to explore the several rooms of the chateau open to the public. There is a fantastic room showing you the renovation works, nearly all of which was completed by local craftspersons. When we had finished ambling around the Chateau we bumped into the jovial chap again, who turned out to be the owner Marc, he and his wife Sophie were an absolute delight, enthusiastically sharing the history and how they found this place, everything from the homemade lemonade and orange cake, were just that little bit better than anything else in Amboise. The house has only been opened for 3 seasons and the owners are not looking to market it to the mass markets, so you are not rushed and don't feel like you are being herded through like cattle. Lovely touches such as lazy deckchairs on the bottom lawn near the River looking up at the Chateau are just lovely and we happily spent several hours there. It really is the best kept secret of Amboise!

Visited on a rainy day and the chateau and gardens were very quiet. Recently restored so not well known yet. Lovely gardens and nice “chateau” with interesting history.

We visited directly after our visit to the DaVinci Park and museum. It is only a few hundred meters door to door and shares a parking lot, equidistant between the 2 chateaux. The grounds are lovely and quiet. The topography ensured cooler weather on a hot July day. Chaise lounges are scattered around the shaded grounds and afforded us a welcome rest after a few hours walking around the Clos du Luce.

Château Gaillard is an amazing castle that is worth a visit. The castle has been really well renovated, there is a huge garden and the orangerie is truly unique in its kind. You'll enjoy taking a small nap in the sunbed with a view on the castle in the garden. Don't forget to taste their orange products (wine, cakes and orange juice) as they are delicious!

Merci !
